There is one other way: (i)pxe boot . Allows reuse of most of system disk space for something more useful than base system (which is rarely accessed after boot). Of course this is mostly useful for datacenter deployments (servers) not on end-client machines (eg. phones). You could do workflows that generate per mac boot configs with interesting things (update firmware image, just Fedora image, decomission machine image, provision iDRAC or whatever). Anybody knows is somebody works on something like this?
