Hi and welcome to RedRaggedFiend,
I’m an experienced tabletop Dungeon Master, Game Master, and player with experience running and playing numerous TTRPG systems like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, Starfinder, World of Darkness, and many more. I am also a decade-plus table top RPG content creator, but new to streaming and video content!
Subscribed and turned on notifications but still hungry for more RRF?

What happens with the red hexes defining the border?
If I need to detail a red border hex I roll a d6, counting clockwise from the NE, and duplicate the terrain from one of the neighboring hexes!
@@RedRaggedFiend Thank you! This was a lovely video to watch, and I look forward to watching more in the future!
You might have touched on this in here, and I just missed it, or in another video, but I’m new here. What program are you using?
Absolutely, it's free webapp hextml.playest.net/ 👍
Awesome, thanks 😊
This is a great system. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks, glad you found it useful!
Split this into like 10 pieces and I might actually watch all of it 🤪 liked what I saw tho!
Thanks!
Content looks great but unfortunately hard to hear over the music. Would be great if you shared a 20 min version with key takeaways.
I actually checked out the new edit but music is still quite loud
@@Gaichou Thanks, there's discrepancy between what I hear/see on my end and the broadcast. If chat doesn't let me know the volume is out of whack I don't know to adjust it while streaming 🤷
Love the intro music! What's the source?
I think it's Ravnskjold kzread.info/dron/wF4bAx_W482_AQu-mv1vWg.html. If not, it's probably Kevin MacLeod 👍
I'm really interested to hear what the system is about since it's clear you have put a lot of effort into it. Do you have a summarized version of this somewhere? A TLDR version or edited down version to just the main points?
Oof, it's not terribly complex but it is... detailed. Summarizing is a bit difficult. Essentially the world is 30x60 of 360 nmi wide hexes, built of 60nmi wide hexes, each built of 10nmi hexes, built of 2nmi hexes. For more specific details I would suggest checking out the table of contents for my blog series on the subject! www.redraggedfiend.com/worldbuilding-process-posts/
Super interesting - unfortunately the music is way too loud and really distracting.
Thanks, others noted the audio balancing as well. I cleaned it up a little bit here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p6GfsbOko6rdaM4.html
Hey Fiend, great video! Definitely using this system for mapping my next campaign. You briefly mentioned that you run travel rules differently with this kind of mapping. Do you have a video or blog where you go into more detail on how you run travel? Thanks in advance!
Thanks! I should definitely make a dedicated video on my exploration/hex crawling system. If you want to see the system in action, check out my Solo D&D series, there's a playlist on my channel page. The basic mechanic is at the start of each day the PC(s) make a Constitution save (or similar roll for your rules system of choice). This roll is modified using the Advantage/Disadvantage idea based on weather, mounts, vehicles, etc. and tells you how much "effort" they can put into travel before they start getting fatigued. Each hex they move through add 1d4 to a running total (hexes have possible random encounters, points of interest, etc. to discover). Once the running total meets/exceeds the Con Sv, traveling additional hexes call for a new Con Sv against a DC equal to the running total. If they fail, they gain a level of exhaustion with all the associated detriments. Exhaustion can be recovered by extended rest, "Camp Days". Maybe that sounds complicated but I much prefer it to constantly referencing weather and terrain pace charts for every hex traversed. Some days you travel far, some days it feels like you barely make any progress.
@@RedRaggedFiend That sounds interesting, I may try these rules. A specific video on the matter with some examples would be cool as well.
@@RanetaCroak Thanks, give them a try. Sounds like there's a focused video on the exploration system in my future! I find the crawling system works well used with some of my other "Exploration Forward" adjustments like Hitting the Box, Resource Dice, and Node-based Overland Travel to give this area of the game a bit more meat.
Is there a way to import maps from Civ6? It auto-generates new worlds automatically for the largest scale very quickly.
Good question, I did consider this back when I was developing the system. Civ's hexes, just an FYI, tend to be more theatre than fact for this implementation. Hextml uses HTML to save and load maps. If you could figure out how to translate a Civ hex map into HTML with the correct formatting... it's theoretically possible? If you just want a filled map, you can ask Hextml to generate one at size!
"I don't know, maybe you have great art skills... you've got *other* problems, probably." LOL. Feeling a little called out. Sounds like you may know an artist or two. 😂
I'd be lying if a couple of friends didn't jump to my mind in that moment 😅
the music is too loud.
Thanks, I'll check the audio settings on the streaming software!
Video starts at 11:45 :)
Nice video and good tips! What is the song in the very beginning? Thanks!
I took a look back at the original BGM playlist for this video but unfortunately that playlist didn't provide a title for the song that plays at the start of this video 🤷
Very nice thankyou
Sorry accidentally gave you a thumbs down when I was trying to give it thumbs up.
That's all right, it happens 😆
What is the page that you are using for the creature filtering?
Good question, I'm using koboldplus.club and jsigvard.com/dnd/creatures.php
I stumbled upon your Blog Post. Thank you a thousand Times for all of the insights you give. This video helps a lot to understand the process in more detail. For some of the blog posts more pictures might help for easier understanding.
Especially the table at 25:00 is great as a reference
Absolutely, glad you've found it useful! Make sure to share your creation and tag me on Twitter! You bring up a good point. With how blogs' density I'm genuinely concerned peppering them with so many images will bloat the length and turn people off from the content. I want to do more of these style videos in the future because I think they do a much better job of illustrating the live process than still images on a blog!
I threw that table together on a lark because my friend asked about it!
I've been trying to find things like these lately Good luck on growing your channel buddy
Awesome, thanks for giving it a watch!
@@RedRaggedFiend didn't regret a second of it
Wow dude you went all out for this one. You get my like and my sub for that much hard work!
Thanks for the kind words and the sub, hope you enjoy the rest of my content!
Just make the stuff you wanna make. Small channels have always been at the mercy of the algorithm, although that has begun to change a bit- case in point, I've started to get recommended channels with sub-100 view videos such as this one in topics I frequent.
Sound advice! I'm not seeking to make streaming/video content my day job, but I do want to share what I've learned over the years with those seeking it out so helps to know what people are interested in. For other small YT recommendations I've discovered recently, check out @TheBardsCollegeYT and @NickIsChilling
So next episode, clean up after the fight, have that talk with akari (plus if able ask about those travelers since you didn't ask in this episode), plan your next steps and deal with the consequences of that fight if Gimbel decides to act? Will be an interesting session.
Anything could happen, that's the fun!
Nice video!
Thanks, it was a fun session!
Really been enjoying your solo campaign! what's your usual upload schedule? saw you were livestreaming episode 30 but can't find the vod for that stream atm.
Thanks much, happy you're enjoying it! For now it's been midweek uploads of cleaned-up streams
Good video
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
What do you use to determine the biome you will make a hex and the extent of the biome in neighboring hexes? I have the shape for a map for a home brew game, but biomes and features like rivers, lakes or mountains are hard for me to figure out (i'm new to worldbuilding/dming).
Good question, check out the map mapping posts in my worldbuilding series over on the blog > www.redraggedfiend.com/worldbuilding-process-posts/. That should give you a good overview of my method for hex mapping!
Great video! Small thing though, in the future it would be great if the music was just slightly lower. I can barely hear you here xD
Thanks very much @Miniko 😅 I've updated the mic position and I think that will make my voice much clearer!
I noticed your outline, and my question is, do you have a standard setup that tells you what your rolls have to be to beat a specific scenario?
Not exactly, I'm doing three types of non-traditional D&D 5e rolls in this series. 1 - GM oracle, which is a 1d20 equally weighted yes/no and I tweak considering the context of the situation. 2 - 3d6 DC determiner, It's a 2d6 chart with the extra 1d6 added to result. It's a balanced way to come up with random DCs when I'm making ability checks. 3 - Effort rolls, these are long-term things the PC is working towards. Effort is a DC multiplied by a frequency to represent how long it feels it should take to accomplish. Whenever the PC has a chance to work on it (usually downtime) they can roll the ability check. You keep totaling the check results as a sort of progress bar against the effort total. Hope that answers your question!
@@RedRaggedFiend This helps my understanding of what I am seeing on your screen thank you.
I hope you keep doing these videos. They are very helpful. Very introverted and this is a good way for me to learn DnD
Thanks, glad you find these helpful. Make sure to share them for others to find! I plan to keep making videos and writing blogs on RedRaggedFiend.com.
Just found your KZread channel. I appreciate the hard work you do. I am new to D & D and this has been helpful.
Thanks! Here's another video you may find helpful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nGZhrbGOnpfAcdo.html. It's a longer video but with a lot of tidbits others have found useful!
love your videos
Thanks, they've been a lot of fun to make!
Hey man! Amazing content and love the idea of solo play. Wish the best for this series and the channel. Much love 💙
Thanks for the good vibes. Solo play is a little different than standard TTRPG play but definitely fun!
Your website and your channel (just recently found the latter) have been so helpful to me as a new DM working on their own homebrew campaign and world. Thank you!
Great to hear! Thanks for subscribing and sharing all the worldbuilding & gamemastering goodness!
Thank you
