    I learned playing 40k during 3rd edition. I was around 14, a friend bought the starter box. He had built and painted the minies but didn't yet read the rules. I picked up the pretty cool book (a book that contained all the datasheet of all the units from all factions in the game btw), I quickly read the whole rules in half an hour or so, from how to move to the fight sequence and we did our first game like that. And this is how I learned (and thought someone) how to play 40k. The fact that we need random made up mods with cut down rules to "introduce the game" to people says a lot to either how bloated and overcomplicated the rules got, or how stupid the public got.

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia20 сағат бұрын

    Thats a really fun story about how you learned 40k with your friend. I remember working through games with my friends in a similar way when I was young. To your question at the end, I do think 3rd Ed AoS and 9th Ed 40K had a lot of bloat, leading to simplification of both game systems in the next edition. But a simplified game mode isnt "needed". Its just helpful. Like I said in the video I learned AoS 3rd by myself by reading the rules, creating a sheet of reminders, and getting games in to work through any specifics that I didnt quite understand. So I dont think people are dumber, but joining a wargame is intimidating and learning the rules and playing a game can be time-consuming, so a quick version to get people into the game is a solid addition to the game.

    I played 2 games of Spearhead last weekend and I really enjoyed it and would totally recommend it to any aspiring AoS player. One thing I noticed though is that Spearhead trains the brain to play without command points (cp), which could be beneficial in the big game where you want to create plays which involves as little cp as possible.

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia18 сағат бұрын

    That's a great point, the commands are still there but you need to balance saving three cards rather than 4 points and it also eliminates your scoring chances, that's a great point you've brought up!

    I think a future video, would be doing some battle reports or some recaps. I think that's what people wanna see. Doesn't have to be super crazy production value, even just still images between phases. I think part of the fun of turn-based strategy (and RTS), is just thought processes and the battle of wits, and explaining why you did what you did!

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia18 сағат бұрын

    I've been thinking about how I'd like to maybe try a picture only Battle Report for Spearhead as a trial. I think they are incredibly difficult to make though, you've gotta have everything organized, lots of notes to take so you can describe it adequately later, and tons of photos/footage too. Maybe I can take audio notes while we play.

    Fire is a weird one to paint. Cause real fire is lightest in the center and darker around the edges. Pretty much the opposite of how highlighting happens when painting. I noticed you went with the highlighting on the horses mane as you typically would when painting. I think it reads obviously as fire, but I wonder what it would like shaded in the opposite fashion with it getting darker as you reach the top of the hair. I only noticed it cause every time I see Eons of Battle paint fire someone always comments the fire is backwards and now I can’t unsee it. But I’ve never seen anyone paint it “normally” Anyways these look great. 🎉🎉 keep up the great work

    I definitely see that you've been improving with your painting. I can see the edge highlights you put on your Cavaliers, and I think you are steadily getting better. Now I won't touch on any points I've seen already covered, so I'll just say that I think you need to do more than just basecoat and wash, and maybe, just maybe look to either use a few less contrast paints, or get some smoother application with them. For my first point, your models do look decent, but other than the bits of highlighted cloth, it looks like you just stopped after a basecoat, wash and maybe a few highlights. But not in all the sections, like the rope on the chest of your Cavalier champion, that could definitely use a wash, because without it, it just looks flat. Now, to be fair, maybe this is partially due to the lighting, it's not always easy to tell with how dark and. . . Almost yellow-ish the lighting is in terms of the tones for some of your photos. What I've heard helps is using a background of a solid color, this can literally be printer paper if you want it to be, just food for thought that might help. But overall, you have something decent, but you need to push it more, fill in those little details, do some layering on fabrics or parts that would catch more light, stuff like that. To my second point, I'm suggesting you either get better control of contrast or try moving away from it because I've noticed several dark spots on the green parts of your Lumineth. You typically want to avoid those, that's where the wash-like elements of the Contrast paint pools and it creates those unnatural looking dark spots. You can mitigate this by layering over it, but at that point I feel the effort is better spent just working with regular, non-Contrast paints. Also, a side note, it looks like you didn't paint some of the bits of sculpted land made to attach the Cavaliers to the bases. I know you're going for a "volcanic wilds of Aqshy" look, but they still need to be painted, I'd offer a suggestion on how to do this if I could, but I haven't done a scheme like this with volcanic black earth, otherwise I would. Finally, please finish the faces of Lyrior and his mount. I'm not sure if you used contrast for Lyrior's face, but it looks like it went on a little thick, because it's tough to pick put facial features besides maybe the eyes and mouth. However! In spite of all that, let me congratulate you good sir for getting in 4 whole games! I haven't even managed to get in a game yet, mostly because of scheduling with friends, but also because work has been out for my blood since April and has never ever stopped. It's good to see that you're finally learning and understanding alot of the tips I gave you as you experience more and more of the game. Also. . . Don't be too sad that you lost to S2D, your opponent brought Be'lakor, at 1K it is HARD to find the tools necessary to deal with a model that powerful while still playing the objective. Especially when he can just shut down one of your key units for a full round, sometimes more if the priority roll just doesn't go your way. If he rolls those 3+'s when he needs to there's not a thing you can do about it but just try and plan around that worst-case-scinario.

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia18 сағат бұрын

    Sorry for the late response, I appreciate your comment as always! As to your second point, I totally agree! I only use one contrast paint, Aeldari Emerald. I really don't like how it pools in weird spots and if the prime job was done poorly (like it was in this case) you might have more raised/flaky parts that affect the application of contrast paints. In the future I'm likely not to use another contrast paint. The cities models are done with zero contrast paints, so I just need to keep working on my highlighting. ALSO I will do the faces eventually! I'm just scared to do them after failing so many times xD

  • @KamenRiderGreed
    @KamenRiderGreed18 сағат бұрын

    @@mysidia No problem buddy! I get it, stuff happens. As to your points, they're fair all around. You don't need to cut out contrast entirely. Just be a bit mindful where and how you apply it. When I painted Krondys, Son of Dracothian for my Stormcast, I mostly used Contrast and it pooled as well, so I'm just as guilty of making this mistake. But they were my best friend painting those heavily textured scales. But for flat armored panels or smooth capes, you'll have an easier time doing the classic basecoat what highlight method. Final pointer, you mentioned priming. If you use a rattle-can, humidity is key, I've found the range of about 60-70% to be ideal, but it's been so long since I used a can that I can't say that with my usual level of certainty. Because I've been steadily getting more comfortable using an Airbrush, and it is SO nice. So I'd consider looking into it once you're comfortable enough with everything else in the hobby. Because I've found myself way less likely to get a dusty, chunky prime using it.(just. . . Don't do what I did and overthin if/when you do start😅) As for faces, you are SUPER valid, I avoid painting then where/if possible. But for my Lumineth I went SUPER simple. I'll maybe send some pics in the Discord for reference.

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia17 сағат бұрын

    @@KamenRiderGreed I do use rattle cans, and for Lyrior, I was impatient and did it later at night when the humidity was higher. I'm going to do another round of priming today mid day when it's not too hot but also humidity is at it's lowest. I'd appreciate any tips on faces, thanks!

    Models are looking good. If anything, I would say to do something with the mounted hero's face, maybe just a wash? And also add a 2nd colour in the flags. Something standout within the writing/symbols, orange or white springs to mind to contrast the green. Just because they are the eye-catching things. People usually look at faces. 👍

    The main thing that jumps out at me for the cavaliers is the metal. It's nice and pristine, but a little flat for metals. Contrast in value and brightness is SUCH a big part of mini painting, and especially for some ashy Aqshy knights, black washing the armor and barding to separate the individual plates would go a long way!

  • @mysidia
    @mysidia8 күн бұрын

    Appreciate the advice! I did wash all the metal (leadbelcher) with nuln oil before doing the highlights with a light silver layer paint (blanking on the name of it). Is there another step I should look into to get more contrast?

  • @benweinberg3819
    @benweinberg38197 күн бұрын

    @@mysidiaHmm yeah that is the usual steps I would've recommended. I do think the metal on the knights' armor is pretty solid, but the horse with metal plate-cowls (which is a pretty visible part of the mounts!) it's less visible. Could also be the glossy nature of the paint reflecting light on camera. What you can do after the all over wash is what's called a pin wash or black lining. Instead of spread wash all over, using a smaller brush put some Nuln oil directly in the crevasses and joints of the metal and it will really pop the dark/light separation

    I’ve tried this in 40k before and see no reason it wouldn’t work in AoS, essentially it’s 2 players on each “team” and each player takes half the points agreed upon so each side has the full amount, each team counts as 1 player for all rules purposes and when it’s one teams turn to alternate both players agree on which unit will be activated.

    I started trying to learn this game a few months ago. I’ve been using proxies with a friend. He just got his seraphon models in. In 40k, I’ve had no issue picking armies I wanted to build and paint. In AoS, I’m completely stuck. I have been trying to fully decide since we first started, and I still haven’t made a solid choice. I’m interested in KO right now, but my interest shifts so fast that I haven’t invested in anything. I tried gloomspite and ogors with proxies. I didn’t like either much.

    Also, I really like your videos. I enjoyed the 24 minutes video a lot. That’s what interested me in Kharadron Overlords a week or so ago.

    Proxies is such a good idea, I was just talking to my friend about them the other day when he was trying to decide which model to buy for gameplay reasons. That's tricky when you're interests are changing often. Maybe it will be about finding the playstyle you enjoy the most and that you can see yourself playing many games with for a long time to come.

    @@mysidia Our proxies were functional. We traced bases and cut cardboard to be the size of the bases. With that base, we wrote on the cardboard what each model was. With this is mind, I found the games to be less engaging. I had less stock in my cardboard circles and ovals, compared to an army I poured hours into. I think for testing lists/models, it’s probably a wonderful tool. I think that my plan now is to watch battle reports and lore videos until I have a solid idea of what I’m looking for.

    @@growliff5998 yeah that's the issue with proxies, it breaks the immersion a bit and there isn't that sense of work that goes into it like when your actual models are out there. Handy for testing, but not for long term. Make sure you check out Season of War if you haven't seen them yet. Really cool battle reports.

    @growliff5998 If you want a more immersion alternative to proxies, there's always Tabletop Simulator. If you just search a faction's name you'll be able to find plenty of mods on Steam Workshop that are meant to reflect the range you're using. You do lose the tactility of physical minis and interacting face-to-face with the other person, but you get to use the models you'd actually use IRL, so if that "look" will improve the quality for you, I'd reccomend giving it a look.

    I just want to collect cool character designs. Dailies become a chore, but dammit, the art is so good!

    Hello Mysidia. Question: will you play "Sword of Convallaria" when it comes out?. What do you think of this game?

    I might try it, but I won't cover it or anything. It does look interesting and the music is awesome

    Just as the computer learned in War Games, when it comes to GW games, the winning move is to not play.
