Welcome to my channel first off! On here I will bring you along on my adventures and have some fun in the process. This channel was created to show more of what is involved behind each of my photos and also share a view into my life as a landscape photographer. My channel isn’t my portfolio, there’s good days and bad days and this is apart of the journey.
I have had a camera in my hand since I got my first camera at 4 years old, that is 30 years now and I have no plans on stopping this journey.

Amazing video! Very informative 🙌🏻
Thanks for this Simon. I’m just getting back into film. We all make silly mistakes. Lovely work 👍
Thank you David. It really is nice and I look forward to doing more in the future and I’m sure I’ll make plenty of other mistakes along the way.
Good luck with your final preparations and transfer back to the UK. Going to be great watching you explore our tiny island 📸💻😀
Thank you! Now it is getting a little bit stressful, I am really trying to plan out what to pack that will come with me on the plane and if I need anything knowing I can get it once I reach Eastbourne. I really am looking forward to exploring the tiny island, I really will go everywhere even Cornwall hahaha
I hope you enjoyed your mini break and feel rested. A good idea to treat yourself :-). How kind of you to help with the expo setup Simon.
It really was nice and a good insight into what I would be like living out of a hotel setting that isn't in a small country town. It was nice to treat myself and the boys shouted me some drinks on Saturday I might have had one too many, so at the time of making that video I had a hangover haha. I haven't had one in years as I don't like drinking much but when it is free and you're having some good conversations it makes it hard to slow down lol. It just felt right to do, I like doing things and being apart of the process despite what I sensed some people thought I had a secret agenda.
That’s great you had some laughs and drinks with them after, bit of a hangover won’t hurt and it’s good to kick back and relax! 🍻🥂I’m sure your good company was appreciated 😊 Living in a hotel or motel would be different, but for the short term it could be done and you could check out the area before committing to a house lease..definitely an option:-)
I think that you're smart getting to an event a day early. When people try to arrive 'just in time' to an event, we fail to realize that everything must go to schedule - in life, things rarely go as planned. Tranquility has a small cost but gives a large and pleasurable payoff. Life is short, and tranquility sought for. Maybe since you're in a metropolitan area, you can do some street-photography in B&W. It's always a pleasure to see photos of people at markets in B&W photos. Cheers.
Hey Mike it really did pay off otherwise I most likely would have talked myself out of doing it on the day. I did get a bit of a hang over after having a few too many drinks on Saturday night haha not something I do very often. You're certainly not wrong about that at all. Actually after my stay there I done a bit of street photography on my way back to the train station, I didn't make a video as I didn't want it to get in my way of shooting but I will share a hand full of my faves in my community area. I think I can only share 4 photos in there. When I get to England I will be meeting up with friends and going to London for some photography which will be really good to do.
I'm glad that you had a good time - especially with all the headaches of moving lately. I'm still using a 5D mark iv. This makes it inconvenient for street photography. It has the loud mirror slap. With mirrorless, you can use the silent shutter and remain incognito. People aren't alerted of street photography - especially if you sit at an outdoor cafe and activate the camera with the phone app. About camera equipment, recently I took my Canon 24mm, 45mm, and 90mm TS lenses (all version 1) out and found them all fogged up with fungus. They're well over 20 years old and sat through three hurricanes where the house had no power (for weeks), and the humidity was very high. I'm pricing to have them cleaned. You know, TS lenses aren't a necessity with digital cameras, as much as with film cameras. I hate to just trash them. It appears that it will cost at least $200/each plus shipping. The one place that TS lenses help with digital is utilizing every pixel on the sensor. It helps you frame things correctly and avoid cropping, as well as perspective correction. If I pay to have them cleaned, the money will come from funds that I'm saving for a mirrorless camera. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Cheers.
@@Mike_in_Louisiana I am sure I will as well 🙂 With the 5D4 it does have a quiet mode which dampens the mirror box so it isn't as apparent that you have taken a photo, certainly not as quiet as a mirrorless camera thought but still a noticeable difference. With the lenses is the fungus still alive or is it dead? Also depending on how bad it is it might just be best to not clean them as it is a big job to get the elements effected cleaned and then the lens getting calibrated again. I would really like to get myself a TS lens some day, I have been eyeing up the 24mm as I will be able to use filters on it. It is really good as you can shift the focus plane so instead of adjusting the aperture you can do it with the lens shift, also good to shift the lens side to side for panos. I would personally say if you're saving up for a mirrorless camera that takes priority and the glass can come second since you have them already and just get them cleaned up gradually over time. You can still use them if they are not to bad, you wouldn't see the fungus unless you point it at a bright light source or see it in the bokeh.
I'm really looking forward to seeing video footage when you get back here to the UK, especially of Eastbourne. I don't live there but I love the place. I live in Swindon but I holiday down there with my dogs every year 😊
It will be so good once I get there and setup! Going back to Eastbourne will be so nice, I am really looking forward to the sound of the pebbles going in and out with each wave so noisy but also really relaxing. Brings back so many memories growing up in England. That is quite a drive you take with your two fury friends all the way down there but I can't blame you in the slightest :)
Really good review. Thank you.
what to do with the dry cabinets if no current? do i need to unplug and put silica gels?
I’ve not had this problem before, perhaps there’s a fuse which has blown. I don’t think you need to replace the drying out unit. If you can’t get it working again even after talking with the manufacturer you could always use silica gel packs, pelican sells them in metal cases and when they are no longer effective you put them in the oven for 20 minutes for them to become good again.
Maybe you had a reason to sell fast, but if you want a fair price never sell to a dealer.. should always try selling private first, if you want it gone fast list it as cheapest among others in its condition, would still likely get thousands more than the dealer will offer. Dealers where you go if times running out and your cars not getting any interest even at lowest price in market. Even then, I'd offer it to a mate for what the dealer is offering me, if they got the spare time, its likely they'll make a few thousand selling it on, the worst case is they sell it to the dealer and get their cash back.
Yep I just needed it gone to be honest so I can focus on other things I need to tackle for my move, the site I used said it would fight for the best price around and it would compete with selling my car privately. When I agreed to their terms and conditions I also agreed that if I left I would have to pay an exit fee basically which wasn't cheap. I did think about selling it privately but lately even selling camping and camera gear this has proven to be a hassle for me. At least is is gone and I don't have to worry, it would have been nice to get more for it. I still have some things I didn't sell with it so that will go on eBay or the local classifieds :)
Just picked up a low shutter count( 7k) 5D mark IV with battery grip for €1500, immaculate condition, lost my photography mojo about 10yrs ago & have struggled to reignite my passion, had a 40D back then with a selection of EF & EFS lenses so I'm hitting the ground running, optical viewfinder is a must for me & the mark IV is a super.
That is an awesome deal you picked up there! Photography is hard and sometimes you need to take a break from it for a while, I am glad for you that your creative flame is back and you'll be back at it stronger than ever before. In a recent video I made, I said I have to sell my canon setup and my 5D was apart of that. Oddly I couldn't let it go for the price people offered me for it so I have kept it, I have been thinking what would I buy if I sold it on or traded it in for something else and I can't think of anything. This camera does everything for me and as you say an optical viewfinder is a must for you and it is also for me. 8 years on and the camera still rocks today!
I recently moved from Auckland to Melbourne, Bendigo to be exact. I wanted to sell my Lexus is250 2007 for 7000nzd but I managed to sell it for 3000nzd. Bought that car for 14000nzd 6 years ago. I feel your pain, cars do have a soul and I felt the same way you did on my very last drive in it 👍🏾
Damn that is a brutal hit! Seems we have a common connection to our cars, they really do have a soul. Most people just think of it as a metal box with an engine to get them from A to B. I purchased my car back in 2017 for $10,500au so selling it for $2,500au was a bit of a hit, At least I got years of use out of it and had some good experiences with it. I wouldn't buy another one as now they are getting to a point they are likely to fail on some major parts.
You’ve had great adventures in your car 😊 Simon you have many new places to explore now. Your car videos really struck a chord with me. Yes they do have character :-)

What brand is your hydration bladder? It looks like it’s fitting perfectly. I’m looking for a 2 Liter hydration bladder but there are so many different types. Or just send me the dimensions of it, then I try to figure it out! Thanks in advance!
I can't say as it is now all packed up, it wasn't a cheap one from memory. a narrower one I would suggest buying to make it easier to fit in the bag.
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto thanks. I forgot, you’re moving back to England 🏴. That’s a big thing and lots to organize. Regarding the bladder: I will by some at AMA… and figure out which one fits the best!
@StephanKempchen haha that’s all good my friend. There’s so much to do, I’ve just sold my car late last week and most of my stuff is packed away now. What I’d recommend is one that is wide and shorter in length as you can fill this up better as it sits more flat, the narrower longer ones tend to end up like a tube. The pocket it sits In doesn’t come out much once you’ve got your camera gear inside the main compartment. Just thinking about mine it could have been about 15x30cm perhaps.
Why would you move to England?... Why?! Looool
Because I am crazy hahaha
Your attention to detail is always spot on Simon :-) In selling cars there’s always a mix of emotions, it’s certainly tough. There’s many positives ahead for you :-)
You're certainly not wrong there! It is going to be good ahead that is for sure :)
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto I’m never wrong😂
@melscreativelens that’s not true. Look you’re wrong about this 😝🤣
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Haha! :-)
Totally enjoyed your video and just want to let you know that I've seen other experts (like yourself) clip the wind muffler to the mic transmitter while it's stored in the carry-case. 😊
That’s so good you enjoyed my video! I do wonder if there’s another way of storing the wind shield as it can easily fall off the mic. It would be good if I could store it in the main case.
The crazy German again… I’m a Nikon shooter (Hobby) and you shoot Canon. But both are great systems. Anyhow, I like your channel and subscribed. Keep it up! The other Australien photographer I’m watching is Matt Irwin. A professional Nikon shooter. UPDATE, July 13th 2024: Got my „Lowepro Pro Trekker BP 550 AW II“ today 🎉. I’m so happy with it! It’s not cheap but it’s perfect and high quality. That’s exactly what I have been looking for! Thanks again for your very detailed demonstration !. Got it for 265€ (not 250 as mentioned before). But still a bargain!
Just replying to your updated comment. That is awesome it has arrived so quickly and you are happy with it! The bag will last you for years, I am glad my video helped you make up your mind on the bag. I personally watched a few before buying mine but I made this one as there where options that where wrong and parts that where missed.
Thank you so much for this great and detailed review. Just ordered it. I found a special offer for 250€! (NEW) So I couldn’t resist! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
That’s awesome I’m so glad I was able to help you out! You will love the bag and great buy on such a great bargain! Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺🤠
Mirrorless is, in my opinion, a bit of a shill - make you buy a new camera that is cheaper to make for a higher price. "Mirrorless has amazing autofocus, and electronic shutter that gets you a zillion frames a second!" - They could have put the the same tech into a DSLR; 99% is software and sensor and has nothing to do with the mirror.
I do agree with you partly on that front, dslr cameras are not that different to a mirrorless and there's perks to both systems. With the bust rate they could do that with a dslr but just use mirror lockup and shoot in live view. DSLR cameras haven't been updated in years now so it isn't fair for people to compare specs and features on a system that isn't being improved over time. I always found the auto focus to be accurate and fast on my dslr cameras but having a read out off of the sensor will often be better.
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Just curious, is the faster read-out speed somehow inherent to a mirrorless design; all else being equal?
@paramounttechnicalconsulti5219 well now they need a faster buffer to transfer the files, some cameras like the R5 have the Cfast card or something similar. But in saying that the 1DX had some pretty expensive cards. I think the high frames per second when using electronic shutter is basically like video but it saves each frame at full resolution. It still can’t do crazy fps with the mechanical shutter. Dslr cameras were limited a bit more due to the mirror and the slap it had. If I got back into sports I would choose a 1DX mark II.
can i store the camera and action cam batteries inside?
I do this with it as well and never had a problem.
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto should lenses be stored without their caps inside the dry cabinet?
@moyg2932 most of the time I keep the caps on, but if I’ve just been out in wet conditions then the caps come off so it can dry out.
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto oh i see tnx sir for answering my queries. ☺️ God bless, more subscribers, more likes☺️

It really is and so nice that I'm feeling better 🙂 the next thing is to sell my car, I will miss that once it is gone as I do like that car now.

im a small 15 year old content creator and im very keen on buying this camera? would u reccomend it if i were to use it as a studio camera (indoor only) or just use my iphone which has the cinematic mode? also is it still usable if i were to shoot cinematic b-roll or is it outdated? thank you.
That is really hard to say to be honest, your phone with an app to get the most out of the sensor could do a better job so long as the lighting is used correctly. If you're wanting a small setup with gimbal stabilisation then the pocket series is a good setup to look at.
It does not matter what you think is wrong with you. To me you seems to be a really nice and good bloke!
Thank you 😊
Keep fighting brother!!
Thank you! 😎👍
Keep fighting those demons of negative thoughts. So much joy and adventure awaits you in the UK. Completely relatable experience with you, the actual photo capture is such a buzz. The self doubt and mental suffering kicks in once the processing starts I find. People don't appreciate how much time and headspace is required to edit the images. Satisfaction once uploaded and shared, but the journey can be exhausting on the mind. Keep your spirits high Simon. 📸👍😀
Cheers Clive! you're certainly not wrong about that! I can see a small part of the life I will have and it is exciting, as my life slows down here and I start stripping parts away either selling what I can't take with me or putting them in boxes it starts to feel empty. I have started packing up my stuff early to get my mind on track smoother so it is less of a shock. I know I will face many challenges ahead but a part of me is excited by this. I have also now got almost 1 months worth of hotels booked in now which wasn't cheap, Once I touch down I will be heading south then going north. Also if you're going to the British GT championship on the 28/29th of September I will see you there, I have my tickets already for it 😁
I hope your spirit finds peace . Gif bless you
Thank you! I am sure once I am on that plane and am over the ocean heading home it will feel so good 🙂
Whenever I relocate from one area to another, I always feel the blues before leaving - like I'm severing a tie. I guess that it is because my immediate environment, presently at my disposal, will soon no longer be at my disposal anymore - it will be gone. Another thing is that once all the moving preparations are 'locked in' with tickets and reservations, I no longer feel in control of the situation - the itinerary now has control of me. I think everything in life has some kind of cost - nothing comes free. Your new adventure in England, with all its coming excitement, comes at the cost of permanent farewell to Australia. The good news is that the blues vanish once you land in England. However sad you feel right now, two months from now, you will remember as a learning experience - the blues are transitory (a phantom). You must have faith in yourself that you made the correct decision and keep marching forward. I know that you are making the correct move. About two months ago, I mentioned to you how much I liked the Margaret River area, and you were adamant saying that you could not just park there for the rest of your life. You felt sure that something must change. I understood your feelings when you asked folks on your forum to stop reminding you of Australia's enchantments. You have only about two months more of the blues before your adventure begins. We are all behind you and supporting you on this move. You must keep sailing forward - just like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Cheers, Mike in Louisiana
I think you're onto something there, your comforts around you are changing as you make the transition to somewhere new. I certainly remember thinking about this earlier on in the year, I might have mentioned it knowing I will go through this feeling and emotion... I just didn't realise it would hit me so hard. I found out since I could very likely have ADHD as well as Autism I need to keep busy otherwise my brain starts to wonder and make me feel bad that I am not doing anything which brings on depression at a rapid pace. I know I am happiest when I am actively doing something and planning. It certainly is a risk doing this but I need to do it, you always have to give yourself to a journey and know that failure could happen and most of the time something really good comes from it. Most play it safe and don't go anywhere but those that take on the challenge certainly have a good story to share and also grow as a person. I am sure once I touch down in England on the plane and get off the plane it will hit me but in a good way, I will most likely have a grin on my face and a bounce in my step. It was annoying when people were saying I was making a mistake leaving Australia, but they don't know how I feel. I can already see glimpses of myself living in England, having that space in me filled will be nice and a thing I don't need to find something to fill it as it will topped up and capped off. What is tough at the moment is working out what to do next as I have so many ideas but no idea which one to pick first haha. Money certainly isn't the problem, more time in the day which is. I will need help from the right people I meet to make it work.
Hang in there you. The depression is hard stuff I know. I think it’s just fears and anxieties that try to rattle us when there is big change imminent. The mind is such a trickster. Acknowledge and greet the emotions and push through as hard as you can. You’re doing great. Can’t wait to follow along your uk adventures.
Thank you! It certainly does like to play tricks and test your strength, I did work out what was causing this when I got home and I was able to make more plans booking things in. Seemed going through this time and I have moments when I am not doing anything it hits me much harder, also in the transition period between countries certainly adds another element. I just want to get going and seeing what happens next. My UK adventures will be so good and I am looking forward to sharing them with you and everyone else that joins in 🙂
I’m thinking a daytrip to Mandurah is a good idea, after seeing this :-) Thank you for sharing your video. I appreciate your honesty Simon, you’re making a difference by sharing.
It was nice going down there and gave me time to reflect, just a shame I felt empty at the time.
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Simon you have done so much and moving is a big step, especially overseas! Taking a break is such a good thing to do to recharge :-) I understand how feeling down can be tough to shift. I really hope you’re feeling better now. You have lots of caring and support around you and great things ahead :-)
Hey great video. I do have a question. I just saw someone around my town selling an used pocket 2 creator combo for $200, I know its pretty cheap compared to a new one, but its a very niched camera and hard to resell as I have seen. I am thinking that's a steal, was looking for it to start vlogging but you know, limited resources to start. As someone experienced as you are, what questions should I ask the guy who is selling? is there anything I should look for? I mostly concerned of course the body of the camera and he confirmed its good! but should I be worried about battery? or anything else? can I replace the battery if its bad?
That’s a great bargain for it! The battery in the main unit can’t be replaced unless you send it off to DJI to replace but that will cost you. The battery grip that also has the mic transmitter in it can be replaced easily by buying a new part. Make sure the gimbal works smoothly and the mic still powers up and has about 320 minutes of charge when full. It really is a simple setup and not to much that can go wrong. Thank you as well! I’m glad you found it useful 🙂
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Awesome!!! Thank you so much!!!
@2vLucas my pleasure 😎
OMG. I have one of these, bought it new many years ago. Now I have my Z6, Z7, D5, all from the Nikon stable. Then your channel and this video popped up on my feed. WOW! I'd forgotten what this old beastie could do. Thanks for the video. When I first bought it, compared to all the other people who were buying point and shooters, this camera seemed huge. Now, those old "P & S" things are long gone, people have their phones now, YAWN! This is a great trip down memory lane. Shows what can be done with vintage digital.

Şiir şiir!
i'm saving up for this camera, i'm a beginner and plan to vlog and such. hopefully by november/december i get it. thank you for this helpful review!!!! :)
My pleasure! You will really like it once you get it, it comes with a wide angle lens in the creators combo but I found I never really needed that. I hope you’ll still be able to buy them towards the end of this year when you can afford it. All the best with your channel! You’ll certainly enjoy creating content.
2024 i still use it, with Ai i dont need new gear , just software!!!!
That is absolutely it! all you need is to upgrade the software to make it easier on you. The gear will certainly do the job for many years, you don't need the latest and most expensive gear. I can't tell a different with the end result with gear produced in the last 10 years (that's just an example).
Good presentation in my opinion. I've had this models since 2017 and agree it's great value and a mid range bag. I use mine less than I expected as I more and more often need to bring a laptop and there simply isn't room for the 16" I use for work. It's room for a Surface Go or pad. I really "hate" fastening a tripod like you did and never bring one that need to stick out below the pack. Works fine with smaller travel tripods that will fit in a side pocket though.
@frstesiste7670 It really is a nice bag and great value. It is a shame that the front of the bag just didn't have a bit more height and width to the pack then I think it would be able to fit a laptop in the front quite easily. Yeah with the way I had my tripod it certainly isn't ideal, thankfully I have since purchased a smaller one and it is more manageable. I have certainly tried a small travel tripod in the side pocket and it fits in nicely and doesn't sit very high once in the pocket.
I love this camera but I have broken two of them accidentally by falls. They are very delicate and will not tolerate any shock whatever. I made some great videos with them and thinking of getting a third one but don't know if I should with my butter fingers!!!! Thanks for the video and restoking my interest in this camera.
@brianbr5388 Ouch!! I have dropped mine once and thankfully it was still all good to use afterwards. I think it is certainly worth buying another one, you could fit a wrist strap to protect it from your butter fingers haha. I really do love this little camera and it gets easier the more often I reach for it.
Glad to see that you have the Fuji camera back. What did Fuji say went wrong? Did you get a new motherboard? When I visited England, I stayed in some bed-and-breakfast accommodations to save money. Maybe an option for you? You could hire a storage unit to expand your options. Good luck with selling the equipment. Gotta do what we gotta do. Cheers, Mike from Louisiana
I am so glad to have it back, I love it even more now. Fuji didn't say really what they done, they gave a part number but no luck working out what it is. What I do know is I have a new shutter, also there was a mark on the sensor and that has gone. I reckon it must have been a new main board and who knows maybe new internals as well. I have had a look into those places and they are a little cheaper but I like to have my own space, also with a B&B you can't stay around the place during the day. I have signed up to booking dot com where I will be able to find some other places to stay before I find a rental. Having a storage unit could work but I need a lot of my stuff so it wouldn't be cost effective, with my house I am looking at places with a garage for extra storage space. I managed to sell all my lenses now. Just my 5D remains but the sales prices for those really vary week to week, what I will do is bring it with me back to England in the container and sell it over there instead, maybe even do a trade in deal and get myself another Fujifilm XT4 or XT3.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto Ideally, a single room or attic that someone is renting would buy you time - time to shop around for a house (so you can be very choosy). Sometimes, when I relocated, I was forced to rush into the first accommodation available. I later saw a better deal, but unfortunately, I had already rushed into a rental lease. When you relocate, things don't always fall into order correctly. I hope that they do for you in England. However, if you do stumble across an accommodation that buys you time - it can only work in your favor. Cheers, Mike in Louisiana
@user-mu2cp5dv7r I shouldn't need to worry about buying time as my stuff shouldn't arrive in England until mid December time, I am hoping to take about a month to find a place and move in. I will basically get my stuff taken away a week prior to leaving, I am doing this to make sure I make use of that time so I would save costs on storage. For the past few months I have been looking at rentals and gauging more of what I would like and also seeing what the market is doing, also I am able to see what properties just are not shifting. Currently I am looking at a rental around the 900-1200 pounds per month mark and that will get me something nice that I can also use to save money in other areas, which is win win in my books.
Great video Simon. Certainly can understand this, it can be a tough call whether to sell camera goods and you have to go with the flow and do what’s best. I’m sure you will find more camera goods down the road:-) Your Fuji setup will be perfect for your needs now and less bulky for exploring.
Thank you Mel! It really was a tough one to make and one I have been thinking about for a while now. I have managed to sell all my lenses which was good, I did loose money on those but not to much which is good. Selling the 5D is proving to be a bit more tricky. I think this will come with me to England and I will sell it over there to a company I am affiliated with. I might even go over to Fujifilm all together as I do like their stuff, a 70-300mm lens would be nice as it is lightweight yet gives me a nice amount of reach. Also given my bad back I think the fuji is a great compromise, I am surprised by the image quality of that. Also for most of what I am doing now it will be perfect. I'll keep some of my accessories for the 5D4 just in case I end up getting one later on or a 1DX mark II would be nice 🙂
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto i’m pleased you sold your lenses, that’s really good. It’s a shame when we sell on camera pieces we often loose money, but it eventually evens out :-) I agree with you on the Fujifilm gear Simon. It’s lighter, creates quality work and will make a positive difference to your back, less bulk to carry. You need to take care of your back then you can keep enjoying your photography Simon 😊
@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Oh and switching to smaller bodies gives more you flexibility 😊
@melscreativelens I am certainly thinking about the move over to them now, there's pros and cons to both systems though but I think I can compromise on that front. It is hard selling gear and loosing money but when I buy the new gear if I get it for a nice bargain then it even outs like you mentioned. It would certainly mean a smaller pack and less weight so I can do what I enjoy for longer :)
