  the bridge is more than a 100 years old, which means it has outlived it’s actual life span. Also the environment in which the Bridge is located is highly corrosive, in fact the next after Gulf of Mexico surrounding Florida. And that means, the bridge is susceptible to a lot of wear and tear. The sea environment by itself is highly corrosive to metals, with a lot of humidity in the air. The region is also prone to high velocity cyclone winds, one of the worst accidents happened in 1964. It was on December 23, 1964, a cyclone storm resulted in a massive surge, that overturned the Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train on the bridge, resulting in 150 passengers dead. Also with many freighters, ships, barges passing under, the bridge is vulnerable to collision
