I could be an LOT easier. You're working against yourself by placing the jack right at the base of the fence post, which is taking most of your strength to compact the earth between the jack and the blade barbs of the fence post. Dig a flat spot for the jack at least 6 inches away and place it on a piece of lumber.

I have 3 of these big trash bags in my kit in my SUV. If I get caught out, and need shelter, I would use your lean to with one cut bag, then slip into one pulling it up to my waist and tie it off with some bankline, then the third, I would cut a slot in the side of the edge near the bottom seam and slip over my head, making a two piece sleeping bag. And with some pine boughs or a piled up pine needle bed to keep me off the ground, I could make it through the night reasonably dry, although I would likely sweat in it, but better than getting rain soaked! And a lot cheaper than a rain suit or a poncho or a bivy! And in the morning, I would still have one complete bag, and one for a rain poncho.

12 years later and this is still helping people, appreciate ya brotha. I've gone through 4 10 mil heavy duty tarps before I had the thought of bungies for some reason lol. You confirmed it for me, thanks. You have any advice for supporting/reinforcing grommets other than bungies or double layering by chance?

FANTASTIC video. I have overlooked the full capability of a Dremel and directed heat for working Kydex. I think this sort of project would be a great one to use thin sheet craft foam for working out the pattern.

This worked exceptionally well on the 1st attempt. Mine is a little crooked but has that super satisfying snap and a snug fit. Thanks for sharing. It's a great design. I would share a pic if I could.

One decade late: Lengthwise I slice the straw, open it, pull out a bit of cotton, light it. Because more cotton is exposed it produces a stronger and hotter flame than cutting off the end only. YMMV.

Found this video years ago and I always comeback to it every other year or so. You can’t get a better real life scenario situation than this video this guy puts himself in a worst case scenario and shows you that you can still come out on top just with little tools you have. I love it! This video I always use as my go to reference
