Hi, I'm Mark... aka mixPHANTOM! I've been mixing, mastering, producing and restoring audio for 30+ years. My plan for this channel is to make a repository of useful stuff to know... along with tests, analysis and audio production techniques. I have been making "video notes" for my own reference for years because I like to fully explore my tools and techniques - so I thought I'd "up" my production value and start a KZread channel! Thanks for checking it out!

how do i create harmoinies in synth v?
2:47 😚
Sounds great. Did you manually add all the breathes?
Yes this vocal was created before the audio to MIDI feature.
Try setting the bulk text of selected notes as “somewhere + over + rainbow +” so you don’t need to break words into phonetic syllables.
One of the best Synth V tuts ever! Thanks a million.
New rabbit hole commensed. One of the best ideas I've seen on youtube in a long time. Really tells you how much can trust your real world sources. I should take a convolution of the alexas in my house cause I've always wondered what's actually going on with these. I've got 3 in my house cause the girls all want to listen to music in their rooms. The wheels are going now.. What have you started Mark, What have you started!! 🤣😅
Thanks Paul... apologies to your family! 😉
which female vocal are you using for this demo?
I appreciate and enjoy your understated, yet highly informative approach. Very refreshing in today’s environment!
Great lyrics for the subject 🙂And a fascinating video - thank you very much!
Excellent learning opportunity!!! Thank you!!!
No Synth V stuff ?!?!?!? Just kiddin ;)
Turns out pop is a formula!
Damn, this series is amazing, I have to keep dropping comments. This thing, Synth V, is so interesting. It's amazing to craft the vocals at this level, it's almost voyeuristic in a weird way. You type, you get singing, you make mods, you get whatever. Amazingly expressive "instrument". Note in version 1.11 you have to deselect "Evenly split note into syllables" to get the split to move around.
There is no more "instant mode" button....I can't seem to find where to turn it off at
I figured it out
If Vocaloid was ever intended to be a “toy” it’s got to be one of the strangest toys put on the market, since because of the lack of any real tutorials on a bit of software that isn’t cheap, you practically had to already be a musical engineer to use it effectively. It’s difficult to determine who it was ever really designed for since it seemed to be marketed at independent musicians who didn’t have access to background singers and the like.
My AI workflow: 1 - Make the lyrics in Google Gemini. 2 - Get chords from either Scaler 2 or Captain Chords 2 - Using Hookpad, enter the chords and melody using the lyrics. Export both midis. 3 - Import the chord midi & melody midi into Band in a Box, and generate an instrumental using a style. 4 - Export the wav song into Synth V, along with the melody midi. 5 - Using Synth V, generate the singing voice using the melody midi from Hookpad. 6 - In Studio One, import instrumental STEMS from Band in a Box and vocal wavs from Synth V
great series. i would advise just using captain epic suite as it all integreates with each other
thanks. how come you used instacomposer and melodysauce rather than captain epic plugins?
I always found their results more useable. Captain Epic is more of a pattern based system... like Scaler 2. I haven't used these tools since Suno and Udio arrived! (just Scaler!)
Gloria Gaynor disco - awesome choice and great tutorial!
Thanks Mark. Another great detailed and intersting video. I will attempt to follow along later this week. I understand the gist but.... I need to re-watch the previous video again and try to understand fully how to use these plugins to achieve this end result.
You really just need to change the air, power, tone, and it works great. Harmonies sound amazing.
Wow, wonderful! I always struggle to to blend the vocals. Thanks for your dedication on how we could improve the output of SynthV. My songs are getting better because of your serie.
How does your "instant mode" show up in the interface like that? I don't seem to see it on my screen.
Dreamtonics removed it. Many of my vids from last year have things that are no longer available or necessary. 🙃
@@mixphantom0101 LMAO... WHEW..... I thought that either my ADHD had gotten the better of me, OR I was developing dementia. Follow up question: Any chance that their team is EVER going to add a "musical scales/modes" feature, so that we can choose which key the song we are in, and: 1) the piano roll to display which keys are in that scale? 2) the software will allow us to quantize pitches to the scale we have selected? This seems to be the only major feature-set holding back the software... and likely MASSIVE adoption by consumers (In my novice opinion).
Might be a dumb question, but why are you doing Synth V as a standalone, and exporting the vocal to your daw, instead of adding it as a plugin in the daw to work on it in real time?
I find that running Synth V standalone is much more responsive. It's not a real time system so every change invokes a render. If you're building a lead vocal with four layers of backing vocals using ARA on top of a full composition with dozens of tracks and plugins (and trying to screen capture!) your computer is going to start complaining! 😉 I also like the workflow as I can focus completely on the task at hand - optimizing vocals - I still find the Synth V ergonomics clunky and need it to be performing without any lag. The only time I use the ARA is when I'm in "mix mode" and need to do a quick double/harmony of a line or two.
Any reason why the software's ARA mode won't function in NUENDO 12 or 13, although it works fine in Cubase 12 & 13?
I wish they had Psyscope for OSX/Apple. :-)
Bonjour, active translation please................

@@mixphantom0101 Merci beaucoup !
Another brilliant tutorial - thank you! Your work really makes a difference to the community 🎉
Very interesting video! I love some out-of-the-box thinking to make complex production techniques more usable. So here’s a tip: include at least a link to the product in a pinned comment or video description. I had no clue this even existed until I stumbled onto your video and took the time and effort to actually search the internet to find out what this is about. Unless you want to remain elitist about it of course…
Thanks! You're absolutely right re product links... here's a Melda tip: every week they put 4 of their plugins on sale at 50% off
Boom! 💥 Thanks Mark. Another informative video with some great ideas! BTW, MAutoAlign... I forgot all about that plugin, which I purchased back in 2015. I've upgraded music PCs since then, and for some reason, Melda Productions is not in my Cubase list. 🤷♂ Such a useful plugin... It is now back in the arsenal.
Compliments for the usual pro video. The great idea here is the one knob real time control, that makes it so expressive (and much more fun towards a number of automation curves). I am a fan of vst synths that have macros in the main page, each macro linked to many synth parameters, I have these attached to Cubase Quick Controls and mapped to the physical knobs of my keyboard. I also purchased, last year, Minimal Audio Morph equalizer, where you morph an equalizer curve into another based on one single knob: they propose it for messing up, but I use it judgely as a normal equalizer and i find it way more useful than a normal eq where you should move a lot of automation curves to do the job. So this applies generally, and the reason why it works is because one, in real time, may move his physical knob by listening to the music and by "heart", making a much more realistic tune (in the case of Solaria). Finally, we might ask the dreamtonics crew to include it into Synth V in a next version. In the meanwhile, thanks for your suggestion!
The Backing Vocals are Great!!!! Did you also do this with Dreamtonic and can you show me how you did it? Best Regards
The backing vocals in this demo were from the Suno AI song.
@@mixphantom0101 Do you mean directly Suno's backings or the main vocals from Suno as backings?
Try the Issac Hayes version - Black Moses album
But is'nt there a unwanted chorus/phasing effect?
Yes there is, I can hear it too. I also use Synth V in Cubase. The best way I've found is to customize the parameters for each song. That way, when you get a soft part or a loud part it still fits the performance. I then save each as a preset. This even includes slight adjustments in the gender slider but again, slight, you don't need much. I have songs where Solaria sounds like two completely different singers because of this. Custimizing to the song I've found is the best way.
Yes indeed there was... but a subsequent analysis with the MAutoPhase sorted it! Offset in the demo was 44 samples when it needed 91 samples. I've since discovered that subtle differences between the "Light" and "Power" voices require finding a section with more consonants and/or extending the analysis window time. Try it... it works! 😉
, dass ich in die in die Stadt zu gehen muss im neuen Job sein und
Very interesting and so thoroughly explained. Might be a bit daunting for your average Joe who has already developed skills at tweaking the modes right in Synth V itself, but hey, this would be the Gold version for it.
@@kingslaphappy1533 Stand by for the "Platinum" version 😉
Sorry, reposting for the community so they know what they're in front with, since they've closed their forum : Dreamtonics should first fix NUMEROUS bugs instead of lauching new stuff like vocoflex. Item ARA mode does not properly work in Studio One, constant crashes with VSTI3 either. VSTI3 as instrument always tries to steal the focus of the audio interface instead directing his audio through the host, crashes when undoing and modifying pitch curves, no sandboxing, no polyphony except if you open new tracks inside Synthetizer-V leading to more lags, poor shortcuts implementation (no click and drag to copy, no lasso...), snapping is more than clunky and imprecise when not focusing deeply, pitch automation does not follow items when copying them, no eq, numerous losses of data - was obliged to start again from scratch many times, metronome does not work !!!...who the hell beta-tested this one ? Needs loads of repairs until we can properly work with it.
I just spent most of my day off trying to get Dubler 2 to work in FL Studio in order to get the same effect as this video. Even had them in a remote video conference to get it to work but no joy. If i'd only seen this video first. Thank you mixPhantom! Subscribed. 🙂
HI. Where is the official forum ? Deactivated ? Why ?
Apparently "crashed" - no other info!

So helpful as usual, saved for future re-watch, thanks! I think Britney pronounces it more like “ bay-beh”
Not justifying a $250 clipping plugin by any means, but it’s designed to be used on a full mix. I wonder if your testing results would be different on a full mix and listening to actual results not just deltas. -on a side note it seems your vocal audio in this video is distorted. Looking forward to more SynthV content!
The video was twice as long when I started and I realized that I was just doing the same thing over and over. The bottom line is that clippers are clippers. If I can reproduce any setting of the Gold Clip, Orange Clip, Standard Clip etc. with a simple waveshaper which nulls within -70 to -90dB then the sound difference with tones or a full mix are negligible - ie. no fairy dust. The Gold Clip caught my attention because so many YTers were trying to convince us that it was making sonic differences that was somehow superior - a simple triple blind test would sort that out - but that wouldn't sell any plugins! 😉 I'm happy to be proven wrong! I am, however, embarrassed by the distortion in my voice over but I had a left over plugin chain in the real time section of my Antelope interface when I recorded and didn't hear it until I edited the video - long after my Gold Clip demo had expired. Lesson learned! Will be back on SynthV shortly!
Have you tried vocoflex ? Really keen on seeing your thoughts
Hmmmm actually 1987 sound more easy or natural (lol duh) 2024 is technically polished. Still like 87 abit more weirdly
I know what you mean.... it's probably because it was all analogue and on tape! 😎
Thanks for the info. The documentation is kinda lacking where I didn't know you could even put br for inhaling until I saw it in their Amazing Grace video where it trolls you into thinking a real woman is singing it at first. Lmao
Thanks Mark... another intersting video. I love these techie deep dives! 👍😎 I use the TRackS Classic Clipper now and again. 😊
Love the tutorials mate, any idea how i can make the word "Close" not sound like "Dose"...
Yes! I've had that issue... if there's a small gap from the previous word (if the SIL flag is present), click SIL to extend the previous word to touch "close". A big gap or no gap you should get "close". Medium and small gaps give you something else!
@@mixphantom0101 Thanks heaps mate, i'll give it a shot cheers
I use it as a VST in Bitwig but timing and the placement of the application window is frustrating, but you can directly route to an audio track for instance. Pros for me: I can add vocals to my tracks, its great when tweaking a lot Cons: the sound of the synth during input 😐, not able to use bar 1 😢 and the controls disappear constantly 😆??
But the goal is not just to trim the top of the transient Mr Phrantom The goal IS the distortion. it's to make it so you hear the transient even when it's not there anymore, it's to make it sound louder than it is by introducing and releasing rapid distortion/noise/whatever And for that goal a compressor won't do the trick
If you try the free MCompressor you will find you can clip more level before audible distortions and then "dial in" distortion by reducing the release speed below 30ms. If you set the release to 0ms the clipping distortion is exactly the same as a clipper (Gold or other).
@@mixphantom0101 To be fair most compressor don't go to 0 release time 😂 That does make me want to test the ones who do to see what it does. I wonder how look-ahead would factor into it distortion-wise
My understanding of how look-ahead works I doubt we'd hear any difference - but will probably try anyway! 😉 The oversampling available on the paid version of the "free" Melda plugs does change it somewhat. The most noticeable is using a small soft knee.
I've never used it. Checked the price and it is reaonable. Hhhmmm...🤔 Great video BTW

Shaperbox 3 is very nice for this. Has a scope, you can trigger the lfo from a kick, and you can duck using multiband, ie leave some highs from the bass and just duck the sub.
Shaperbox is pretty cool, but I was only using this LFO style side chain as an easy example for demonstration. Psyscope Pro has four other displays (spectral etc.) to make it easy to compare signals in realtime. It's perfect when you're "multing" a bass, or layering kick drums as you can display up to 16 tracks. My favourite technique is putting a Psyscope before a compressor and another after the compressor. You can loop a kick drum and see the effect of the attack/release settings in realtime at the same time as you're sidechaining the bass - it feels like cheating! 😎
@@mixphantom0101 Understood. Another thing I do with shaperbox is I draw the volume envelope to control the volume what otherwise would be difficult if using a compressor, so volumeshaper is really good for that if one has to fix issues. Anyhow visualization is very good to learn from.
I have to downvote shaperbox. They call their system "sidechaining" when in fact there is no sidechain input, it is automated ducking. When I was just starting, this wasted a few hours of my life, never to be returned.
Do you by chance have Melodyne? I'd LOVE to learn how you navigate Melodyne in Cubase.
I have the basic Melodyne but never use it as VariAudio is far more powerful. But, I should do a tutorial with VariAudio to show some advanced techniques I use.
@@mixphantom0101 yes, please do Mark. I've ben using VariAudio too for many years. I love your insights and experience, so I would probaly learn something new! 😎👍
