What A/D are you using?
In this video the Dangerous Music Convert-AD+.
Had dismissed this as too subtle for my needs but that was before I got the headphones out. Would’ve liked to be able to push the drive a bit hotter, but guess there’s other ways around that. 🤔
Insted of sm7b could i get away with using a neumann u87 ai
Thanks for this comparison, and yes, the mention that once we start adding effects and mixing, the appartent purity of any mic goes out the window. I appreciate your humility.
Thanks a lot for the video. This is my first time recording and I’m trying to record my upright piano with 2 SE8 mics, with a Scarlett audio interface and Ableton 12. Everything’s plugged in, cables are connected, but my DAW just isn’t picking up any audio. I’ve restarted, my audio input and output devices are the audio interface. The audio tracks are set to Ext in. It must be something wrong with my config settings but I can’t work out what!
Hey I'm a total newbie....or dummy. anyway I have Garageband and 2i2 Scarlett. I don't know a darn thing about recording.. Can you help an amateur learn to make some nice recordings?
Many thanks for this video!
you are welcome!
C1000s leaves a nice pocket for the vocals!! The close miced C414s were great if the piano is the most prominent instrument, and I loved the mono U87 placed further back
That drum throne though! LOL Watched the whole video and enjoyed it. I'm in the process of rebuilding (really mostly rearranging) my space which I use for mixing and mastering. Not a lot of recording these days although I need to get back to it eventually. Been documenting my mess on my channel in little short snippets. Hope to do a tour at some point (probably similar to yours) once I finish. Hoping to get done over the Easter holiday. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and let you know I enjoyed it and subscribed. Have a great one!
Thank you! Haha oh yes a throne for the king! Don't tell the bass player I said that! :-) Appreciate your comment and sub. Look forward to see your studio tour too.

I don't mind, these videos are really for fun and the lovely people who do find the channel to enjoy. Have a good day!

Awesome . Thank you.
Thanks for that man!
You came across well. You are right so no offences can be taken.
Oddly enough, I have everything I need right now. I mean, it's fun to look at new gear once in a while, but I've made 18 albums in the last 10 years all with the same stuff.
Needs to be said more often. I spend a lot of time on music subs on Reddit and I see newer producers over and over saying "I've watched all the tutorials, read all the books, attended the seminars, why can't I make the music I want to make?" It's the MBA culture. The idea that you can tutorial your way to experience.
This really spoke to me - going through a GAS phase at the moment (which we all know is another word for expensive procrastination). Realising if ones music mightn't be understood without the vanishingly small difference between two preamps/mics/synths/eqs then your focus is completely in the wrong area - in the details and not in the story. I see GAS, at least in myself, as a sign of laziness. Time to get my arse in gear and compose! Thankyou for this video.
Yes, I should stop watching youtube videos and make music instead while I procrastinate by watching your videos.
Hit the nail on the head - When I was 15/16 with a cheap Squier and a little amp that I plugged with a rudimentary cable into GarageBand on my iPad I used to write multiple songs a week consistently. 95% were useless, but that 5% yielded some very good material. Now, as a better musician, a better producer, with decent equipment, I find myself seeing that special 5% less and less... ...not because I'm worse, but because of all that outside noise, I'm too self critical to get past that first hurdle. The gear influencer thing is particularly bad in the guitar pedal community as I'm sure you know, and it's difficult to discern useful information from advertising. The only saving grace as a JC120 lover is that I'm not swayed by the 'authentic tube tone' bullshit - but show me a £500 Strymon reverb and it all starts to unravel 😅
no offense... I really like your perspective... and I thin kI would agree with you
Here's the main issue musicians are facing these days ,.... it's easier to make a video ABOUT MAKING MUSIC ... and have it viewed.... then it is to spend countless hours writing, recording and then producing a song which most likely will go nowhere.... admit it that's why you make this video. I was tempted to make a video on the same subject but it was in direction of stop making music and make videos about making music. That is of course if you want to make money from KZread in any realm of music
Thanks for your insights. I love producing music and videos to be honest. Both take time and thought. Happy recording to you!
I wrestle with this all the time, but it's not just because of KZread. It's because I get ideas about more efficient setups, or things that can help with tracking or production. I try to put specific limits on "how much" specific gear I have. For example, a maximum of 4 basses, my outboard is limited to my rack space available (however I managed to find a way to fit more rack space last year). I also try to spend some effort considering what I don't need and can get rid of. For example, when I moved from UA Apollo to Presonus Studiolive, I decided to only work with stock Studio One plugins. Two years in and I've not added another plugin yet. I feel like I'm nearing the end of the gear buying phase. Just a couple more things on my list of nice to have extras, but I'm wrestling with specifics. On the bright side, I did manage to write a full album with my daughter since the start of 2022 and we're releasing singles now: open.spotify.com/artist/0PjA2f5kLHfelwZP3smWpF The full album is out May 3rd.
Was just having a similar train of thought roll through my mind. Presently attempting to get back on the recording horse. 🐴
Nice one! I think many studio people wander in and out of the You Tube binge I suppose! :)
Good reminder, thank you 🙏
Thanks for this awesome video. Now here’s my question. I have a SoundCraft Signature 12MTK, and when I record just voice, I use a DBX 286S pre-processor. For my microphone to record only voice, I use a dynamic microphone Shure SM57. I invested in two other dynamic microphones, 2 Behringer XM8500. And then I have one audio Technica condenser microphone. My piano that I have is an upright Kawaii K500. With the microphones listed above, which one of those in your humble opinion would be the best to record my piano? I don’t have soundproofing, but my room does have carpet, and does have the removable ceiling tiles, so it makes it semi soundproof.
Thanks for the comment! I would suggest and honestly speaking, try them all. And then listen back and use the one that you feel gives you the sound you are looking for. Its really the only way. If it was me and if the room is not too well treated, I would start with the SM57 as dynamics are great on piano and also do not eat too much of the room sound. I hope that helps and happy recording to you!
was the source recorded by stereo miking? can i just record mono and then duplicate and make pan left right?
Thanks for the message. You can of course record mono and pan L&R, however this would not be a true stereo sound recording. But if it works for your songs, then great go for it!
I tried mono top one condenser mic miking and so pleasure for me. thank you very much. what if i play piano and vocal at the same time, how would you record piano and vocal ?
Thanks for the comment and vocals and acoustic piano recording at the same time is for another video. The key for multiple mics whether it is 2 or 10 mics is best separation as possible.
it sounds stereo miking with small diagram is better sound
Thanks for your insights. For me its all about what the song or composition needs. Happy recording to you!
should i cover the back of the piano when the piano is near the wall in the home? when recording
Ese es un Beta 58a, justo la comparación que estaba buscando. Gracias!
The feel this Mackie 32.8 gives a mix...a plugin...just cant do it........everything sounds gluded...and warm....and rounded....I think the Mackie 32.8 is about $700 in working condition
I use a Mackie 32.8 with my two outboard compressors......a ART Transy for mixing and a WA G Comp for Mastering with Nebula for Mixing and Acustica Audio for Mastering with my mixes Ive ran through the 32.8
wow...im sold...im getting one!!
Really cool experiment, I’m trying to decide which method to use for an upcoming session with my band. I much prefer without the click in your example, I also felt like the vocal was more in tune, guessing that’s because it’s easier to hear your voice in a real space. Excellent informative video and I’m looking forward to digging deeper on your channel!
Yeah, it’s all about figuring out how to properly use whatever equipment you have on hand, and from there capturing an inspiring performance. But if you have the money and enjoy playing around with fancy gear…. No harm in that either. Nice video, and nice performance too.
100% - I personally really enjoy making music with great equipment. I also like making the best I can with cheaper gear too. Both have give a different experience and rewarding.
😈 'promo sm'
You should consider swapping some equipment around. Your best processors (Creme, Fusion and TLA) should be below your speakers. It made me cringe to see you work with them in your otherwise great mastering video.
Great comment! I will look into this if I wasn't really happy with my set up and work flow though! Happy recording to you!
I think the Rode M3 is good on guitars and excellent on miccing up amps. It's cheaper than the NT3 and isn't as hyped in the top end.
Thanks Paul. I am a fan of Rode mics and yes the NT3 certainly has some presence.
Best demo Ive seen on the fusion. I just brought one, arriving in 2 days, Nice song by the way
How the fussion working for you.........
Has anyone used a Austrian Audio CC8 stereo set on an upright piano?
Yes I have in the past when trying different mics for a project. I personally like small diaphragm condensers on piano. Especially when the piano part is to sit in the mix rather than be a solo or have a bigger presence in a mix. The CC8's are very similar sounding to the Rode NT5's and Neumann KM184's. Keep in mind, the piano itself is just as important as the mic's too.
@@meyerstreetrecords694 What were the differences in the tone between the Rodes and Neumann’s although you mentioned sounding very similar to the CC8? Was one more neutral sounding or had more sibilance than the other?
Nice comparison! I was never a fan of the NT1, and still ain't. It's an extremely bright microphone that I find doesn't take processing very well. It might fool one into thinking it's awesome in solo, but every time I tried it in the mix, it sounded thin. Just my two cents! In truth, my favorite of all these mics was the one mic you used, but didn't test - the SM7B. :D Now, there's a workhorse!
Great insights. The SM7b for me is a rock go to for sure. Happy recording to you!
I have an NT1 from around 2007. They are fantastic mics. My son recorded three albums with a single NT1. I also hit 1000 subscribers in the past couple months. Congrats.
Congrats too! I look forward to see some recording and mixing vids on your channel too :-) Keep well
Good to see you back, Martin. Hope you have a great 2024.
Enjoyed that - useful comparison. For your voiceover though I wander if you could do with generally using the heavier pop-shield on the SM7b (the A7WS - the other one that comes with it). Sounded a bit plosive (ironically when you were talking about pop shields!) to me. Could be my headphones of course. I tend to leave that one on all the time. Nothing wrong with good annuciation!
Are you using a matched pair on the C414?
In this video I was yes.
I think the combination of both is really cool. It adds another layer of contrast. I've recently recorded a song where the intro is completely loose and when the rhythm hits I go to a click. I've also heard of people programing their metronome to increase in tempo as the song goes on. supposedly to mimic what tends to happen live. Very nice vocal by the way
And for those of you that don’t have gazillions to spend on mics. I highly recommend “Mic Mod” plugin. It’s really simple to use. You have an input side where you select from the list the mic you are using. For example if you have an SM57, you select that. Then on the output side you select from the dropdown menu any mic you wish and it adjusts to mimic it. There are a few controls to adjust proximity and tube saturation. But I’m well impressed with it. Turn an SM57 in to a Neuman u47 in one click. Haters will say you can’t beat the real thing. Paupers will say you definitely can 😂
I love this comment! I am all for plugins too. Drives me mad when I hear comments like you have to use the real thing. If that was the case the digital piano market would have failed, which it has not. The Car market would have failed and we would all be on horses still and we would all still be reading newspapers meaning the PC market would have failed. Joking aside. I simply say this, use whatever makes the sound you are looking for and do not buy anything that gets you in to pointless debt. Everything is always evolving. For me, recording with the mic collection I have is awesome and I enjoy it. Happy recording to you and thanks for the comment.
💯. BTW this video is perfect for me because by hearing the different results, it gives me some reference points to use said plugin with. So thank you for the great content. *new subscriber
Wat do u think of rode nt5?
I love Rode mics in general. Clarity, high in gain and stylish too.
hello and thanks for the video! do you use the akg c414XLII or the akg C414 XLS pls?
You are welcome! I have the C414 XLII. Very versatile microphones.
