Hello, friends!
Years ago, I started sharing projects online as I worked to turn dolls into characters from my epic fantasy book series. Those projects can be found on my other channel, Lomi's Playground.
But as I finished that series and spoke more about the books the dolls were from, I started getting a lot of questions about books and writing that didn't make sense to share answers for on a channel about dolls. So, you'll find them here, instead!
Join me as I vlog my way through various book and publishing projects, from writing to editing, formatting, publishing, and more.

Thanks for sharing, very cool!
Thanks for watching!
I use Vellum with Ulysses, which generates my .docx file for Vellum. I can adjust my .css files in Ulysses to match what Vellum is expecting. It works very well, but there are a few things I have to adjust by hand within Vellum. At least, I haven't found the way around the manual steps I need yet.
I am very interested in your approach, but why in the World didn't you do it by showing us the actual cards instead of the drawings?
This was so helpful to see as I have this software on my list of things I'm going to need soon but hadn't seen exactly what could be done it yet.
I'm glad to know it was useful for you! I'm glad I decided to get it when I did, but the decision would have been a lot easier if I'd been able to see more than a few screenshots of the program.
Wonderful process. My take away - This process starts with the highest level as columns and the character's stories as portions of the columns. The cards just makes this super portable and easily reorganizable. Expandable. ... (last adjective) I am looking forward to using this method this weekend. Got my colored index cards and fountain pen ink. Thanks Beth.
Glad you enjoyed it! This outline in particular was a little leaner than some others I've used this method for, since it's book 5 of a 6 book series... so the character arcs are pretty deeply ingrained in everything I'm doing. But I've done early-series outlines with dozens of cards before too, so definitely room to let it grow.
What's the name of the doll channel (I was washing dishes during that part)?
My doll channel is Lomi's Playground. You can find it here: www.youtube.com/@LomisPlayground
I appreciate your honesty and love how invested you are in your art.
Thank you!
Ingram isn't charging anymore I don't think. You can change them for free now, I'm like 95% sure :) Love you art.
Thank you! You can do initial uploads for free, but they still charge for revisions. :(
@@BethAlvarez Oh no, booo!!!!
Thank you so much for this, Beth! This is really amazing insight. You are honest and sharing which is appreciated. I'm now a new subscriber and look forward to learning more from your videos!
Thank you!! I appreciate that a lot. I often find myself wishing there was more transparency from the authors I see in writing groups, so I figured I might as well start it :)
this is BEAUTIFUL
Thank you so much!
As a fellow Author and Designer who designs her own covers, I know how it feels until you find the cover you are satisfied with! Hope to corporate with you or work with you on cover design!
I'm glad to know others relate! It's definitely an uphill struggle. Thanks for stopping by :D
@@BethAlvarez Sure thing! As fellow authors and designers, we need to follow and support each other.
❤thanks , thats lovely
This is amazing. Thanks a lot.
thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
That is amazing. XD
It was so much fun!!
Thanks! Very helpful!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
What do you write on your cards? Pov, setting, conflict, goal? Something else?
@@lexyprice4753 It’s primarily bullet points for story progression. Things like “Character A sends a letter to her sister. Character B is sent to deliver it. Character C feels overlooked for not being chosen for the errand.” When I write stories with many POVs, I will rely on the color coding of the cards to dictate what POV a section should be in, but this series has only had two POVs at a time so it hasn’t been necessary to track. I don’t find a need to plan out scene-by-scene motivation or goals for my characters; those things should be baked into the beats of what’s happening as their actions progress the story.
Hi Beth! I just found your channel and I’ve been binge watching all ur content. Thanks for the great info!!
Thank you so much!! I have such a long list of things I want to share but it’s been hard to find time to film while I’m preparing for my new book to release.
@@BethAlvarez Thanks for the reply. I can imagine, launching is stressful, but it's your bread and butter, so keep at it. I have notifications turned on, waiting for more!😜
Awesome! I've heard people complain about the 'recent trend' of reading writing craft books, like it's a new thing. But where did people go before the internet for info? Books! What an amazing haul. Thanks for sharing.
That’s so funny! Especially since most “free” writing craft advice online is actually just bait to upsell to a course or, you know, a book 😂 So far I’ve been pleased with these! The examples they study are pretty timeless pieces that are still prevalent today, so the advice hasn’t even become dated.
that's such a cool cover!
Thank you!! It was so different from anything I'd made before, it was a really fun creative experience.
Yes!! Keep going 😊
I hope to!
Yeah, this has been a fun story to watch unfold. XD Congratulations!
Plot twists everywhere! I need to be taking notes. Thank you!
That is so exciting! 😭♥️ I'm so happy for you, what an awesome evening you must've had! Congratulations on ANOTHER award!!
It hardly felt real, but it's definitely exciting! Thank you so much!
Congratulations 🎉
Thanks so much!!
I always enjoy your updates! I'm looking forward to listening to the audiobook when it's ready 🙂
I hope you enjoy it!!
😈 'Promo SM'
I would love to see the process in Vellum ⭐️_⭐️ it’s super fun to watch you work!
I remember before I bought Vellum, I would have loved to see a walkthrough of what the process is like. I'll be sure to put it on my list of things to film!
I hope you'll get enough rest 😊
Thank you! <3 I'm doing my best to leave plenty of rest time in the evening. It'll be easier after school starts.
@@BethAlvarez that's nice 🩵
I love books with monsters, mysteries, and unexpected allies! 😂
I must like them too, since apparently all my books have them? Ha!
This was very interesting to watch!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Nice to hear an update. Hope things improve for you soon ❤❤
Soon!
