Hi. Thanks for the daily videos. I'm starting level 3 in September. Is there any pre-reading/resources you'd suggest in preparation ?

Hi Vicky, hope you enjoy your classes when they start. A couple of heavyweight books that I was told to get were 'The Linguistics of British Sign Language An introduction' by Rachel Sutton-Spence and Bencie Woll and 'Sign Language The Study of Deaf people and their Language' J.G. Kyle and B.Woll. They are quite old books so don't cover the way technology has influenced sign over the past 20 years but they are solid in terms of history, culture and linguistics which you'll need for Level 3. As you'll find it's quite a jump from Level 2. Hope that helps 🙂

Hello mate, Have a look at 'Where's the interpreter?' campaign that was set up around Covid time. That is really useful and something you can talk about when the presentation exam (if you get given a topic that relates to it) comes around as it covers the Deaf perspective to the lockdown. Enjoy the Christmas Ball!

  • @mikeloweandco

Hi Sandra, thanks for the comment. Time sadly against me for subtitles but always happy to answer a question or chew over a sign and meaning. My morning BSL routine before work is a bit of linguistics reading, diary, receptive practice (deafstation.co.uk is brilliant) and some sign learning - about 20 mins in total.

Hi Mike - I'm impressed with how many of these diary videos you've done. Well done! I'm studying for Level 3 at the moment as well. If you don't mind some small points of feedback as a (hearing) viewer: I find the fingerspelling a little hard to follow - a little slower and smoother and more aligned with the lip pattern would help. Also I think the "blowing" lip pattern is getting overused. For example on enumeration or spatial references I don't usually see that. More just for exaggerated descriptions. I hope that makes sense!
