We don't own the people we date. They are free agents and have the right to happiness. So the Girl Code, is a bunch of hooey. What right does someone have to deprive you of a potentially happy life with someone just because they dated them first? They don't! It may be somewhat uncomfortable but if they are truly your friend, they want you to be happy. What difference does it make to them, especially if they initiated the breakup? The old "I had her first so she's off limit" is a rediculous antiquated concept. Or as the question points out "I had her, didn't want her anymore now none of my friends can have her either". Once YOU breakup with someone they are just as available as anyone else. I say go for it and ignore the social pressure to refrain. Such attitudes are immature and selfish to say the least.
