for 20 foot high roof, does the latter have to be 5 feet out or can it be 3.5 feet out because of the space?
The 4/1 ratio is meant to be a guide on ladder safety. A shallower angle (more that 5 feet horizontal) will start increasing the chances of the feet of the ladder slipping on the ground and sliding out. It will also put more strain on the ladder and the top support. A steeper angle (3.5 feet) will mean that there is less likelihood of the feet of the ladder sliding out - therefore safer. But it means that as you climb the ladder, you cannot lean backwards too much -as this will affect the balance of the ladder and the risk of falling (with the ladder) backwards increases. I personally prefer a ladder steeper than 1/4. Because I have had my ladder slip out from under me a few times. I lean forward as I climb and then install the top ladder tie when I get to the top. The tie then means I can lean backwards with more confidence, without the ladder pulling away from the top support as I use the ladder during the day. When you understand the basics of how a ladder functions, then you can make up your own rules.
thanks
What’s with the classical music ?
THANKS
Been fixing leaks for over 20 years and notice the problem is the flashing is too close to the upturn which give the upturn less tolerance. Flashing should be wider extra 200mm to allow rain water to fall further away from the upturn and lessen the overflow and to increase tolerance. Don't forget that rain water also splash as it hit the corroagation and narrow flashing allow the splashing to happen right where the opening at the upturn. Increase the tolerance by using wider flashing reduce any chance of capillary action too
Sorry mate, to where is the harness connected on the roof?
Can you recommend anyone in Melbourne ?
good tips
G'day G'day, my names daneil and i just moved into a new house, well new to us as it was built in the 6ps or 70s and within a month of moving in we started to get water stains on our ceiling so i went up and had a look see and there was the 3 or 4 minor cracks in the bottom of severl tiles which was mentioned in the inspection report but what was mentioned was in the report was that all of the ridge lines both horizontal and diagonally were either crack or chipped and in multiple places missing and being on the pension and having spent our last cent on buying it i had to redon all of the ridge line cementing myself reoving ot all cleaning and then cementing it back in and am quater way thru flexible pointing so i can guarantee for certain that there are no weep tiles at all as none of the roofing videos mentioned them and i only watched the ones made by professional roofers showing how to do it. All water leaks have stopped and as soon as i get the money together I'll be buying more flexible pointing stuff to finish it off so my question is should i drill the weeps now or wait until i finish repointing then drill the weel holes and what size drill bit should i use, 4mm 5mm 8mm?
Hi Daniel, We used a 6.5mm masonry drill bit on the video. You should upsize to 8mm if you can. We recommend drill the weep holes before you do the flexible pointing. Then, after the flexible pointing has been done, clear out the weep holes just by poking through the 8mm weep holes with a 6.5mm rod/drill bit.
Do you need weep holes in the hips? The ridge caps that run down the roof?
Weep holes are not usually needed along the hips - because the watercourses act as weep holes.
I agree with using the front clip... CONTROL and ease of use and seeing what 9shappening is everything, and you don't get the lanyard snaked around your leg (NZ lig)
The ladder should stick up three feet higher than the mounting point, and Not (I would think) be at a Ninety degree angle.
That's so informative clearing many of my guessing. Thank you!
Are you able to post a video showing how you set up the rope?
Don't try this, you will die.
You didn't maintain 3 points of contact within the first 10 seconds of the video! I'm reporting this to KZread authorities!
I've never hear of "weep holes" in the ridge caps. Is this a comon design, globally? P.S. I'm a homeowner in S. Africa, and have been experiencing weeping during heavy rain. I've lived in the house since 1976, the roof has been professionally painted every +- 10 years and thought that this fairly recent issue was due to high winds pushing the rain up,under the concrete tiles.
Weep holes are one way to release trapped water. Since trapped water is universal, then weep holes should also be universal.
Double sided sticky tape works best
Thanks
How about: "Don't design the house with a box gutter!"? Much less trouble and lower risk.
Agree. They seem to be beyond the capabilities of many tradesmen.
Australia seems to be one of only a few countries that require a sump, whereas in most countries they just connect the downspout directly. What exactly is the function and advantage of having a sump? What can happen, if there is no sump?
The sump allows maximum flow in the downpipe by the 'head ' of water that the sump generates. Much like pulling the plug in your kitchen sink that is full of water..
@@RoofRepairsSydney thanks, that makes sense. I guess in the Philippines we make up for the somewhat decreased flow by using multiple 3 to 4 inch downpipes on each really deep (more than 20 cm) gutter. Also, internal box gutters are not as common here, making the whole system less risky. It's good to know that I might be able to increase overall flow by just adding a sump. I think architects here dislike sumps, because they mess up the clean lines of their design.

The ONLY reason I clicked on this video is because I though it was John Dunsworth (Mr. Lahey) on the ladder lol

👍
Can't fault these guys. Geoff, Jack and the team were great. Amazing customer service and helped us out.
That intro was magnificent.
Thank you for the tutorial nice work 🤝
I put a bead of silicon along the underside which works better because water won’t flow up hill, but will still cling at the edges when turned down
Hello friend, we are absolutely honored to follow your work, we are immensely happy and grateful to share your amazing work with us, we admire every work shared by you, congratulations for the excellent work we wish you success friend, another subscriber here
Thanks!!
Thanks for saving my roof. Had a roof that leaks since we bought the house. tried everything and this works. God knows who put those sheets up at the first place didnt turn them down.
Thanks, but only a few seconds showing the harness 'anchor' pomit. What to anchor to with a cement tile roof? Thanks.
What's the name of the device you slide on the rope?
What is the name. I’m trying to find it toooooo. I need the decide that slides through the rope
probably use both those loops with your carabiner on the front of the harness
whats the bending tool called please
It may be better to use ladder standoffs that rest the ladder onto the roof instead of onto a possibly thin gutter. They also stabilize the ladder due to additional width and should keep the ladder from sliding downwards.
Why would you do that??? Your suppose to scratch up and dent the gutters.... It's not like it's your house your working on. So who cares what damage you cause.
Australian gutters are not flimsy. The weakest ones are aluminium. Most houses would have colorbond steel, a good Aussie product. No plastic rubbish like in other countries.
@@lovenottheworld5723 I stated "a possibly thin gutter" and this video is shown in all countries, including those that use very thin or weak materials. In Germany the gutters are very thick and strong, in the Philippines they are flimsy and could be just 0.3 or 0.4 mm. Good for you, if this does not apply in Australia. But how would you know, if aluminum or steel is used before climbing up the ladder? In Australia NO 1 ROOFING actually sell a uniquely designed ladder standoff, so there must be a market for such a product: "The Lacket is a new ladder safety product that prevents extension ladders from slipping sideways or falling backwards vertically." It prevents the ladder from resting on the gutter directly.
@@lovenottheworld5723 No colorbond gets damaged. Trades just don't GAF and want to believe that they're not terrible people.
My gutter is ancient.. so it could likely just collapse under a ladder. I have a standoff meant to be used against a wall, but it works against roof tiles. Yeah Lacket is expensive. Little helper is cheap but it just wraps around the gutter which imho can still damage it.

It’s good enough.
Watching this at 3am because I just woke up to a soaked blanket 😩😩😩😩
Mr.Lahey
Hi Jack. I saw the screws of the roof in the video. Since it is a Kliplock roof, should not it be clips which are used to lock the roof instead of screws? Appreciate your help with this
thanks, mine is the opposite, it leaks only when is rains very lightly, or if its foggy
Thank you very much, Sir.
I really & truly thought this video would be about tying a ladder, using a dynamic rope, to a roof anchor. As others have stated, I wouldn’t trust the gutter system to hold the ladder in place.
What if the tile surface has a porous feel to it? Would painting be a much more feasible option after, of course, the tiles have been pressure washed?
can you recommend any in melbourne
Use a G clamp to clamp the gutter, tie ladder and clamp together! Not other clamps, G clamp more reliable.
So you clamp onto one of the hangers? Same as C? Or are you saying to clamp the tie from the ladder to the gutter using the G clamp? The idea reminds me of the lock jaw ladder grip FWIW... :)
my roof only leaks when it rains lightly, not heavy :) as it's a very low pitch and the sheets haven't been trimmed on each overlap, it's likely creeping back under the sheets
Scratching gutters no thanks
