TalkTools

TalkTools

TalkTools was founded by Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson in the 1990's to provide the best Oral-Placement Therapy (OPT) techniques, training, and tools.

OPT uses a hierarchical based approach to improve speech clarity and feeding skills in individuals of all ages and across diagnoses. It adds a tactile component to traditional speech and feeding therapy, enabling clients to feel the movements necessary for the development of their skills.

Our mission is to improve the lives of individuals facing the obstacles of speech and feeding disabilities. We approach this goal primarily through education. We strive daily to educate therapists and parents with clinically proven techniques that improve speech and feeding. Over 3,000 attend one of our live workshops or self study courses every year. The effects are exponential. Each newly trained therapist expands the benefits OPT offers to clients.

To learn more on our tools, training and techniques, visit talktools.com/.

Cw, possible unwanted advice and rambling I'm glad you're doing interesting things but I am autistic. And silicone absolutely makes my skin crawl, especially in my mouth. Hoping my situation is unique. If it helps, soft, smooth plastic, like a baby spoon was welcome.

i was also looking for the same, this is what I found: some of the studies that discuss the relevance and use of jaw Grading Bite Blocks in speech and feeding therapy: Green, J. R., Moore, C. A., & Reilly, K. J. (2002) - This study focused on the sequential development of jaw and lip control for speech, highlighting the importance of jaw movements in speech production. Meyer, P.G. (2000) - This research identified the relationship between tongue and jaw dissociation for speech, providing insight into the significance of jaw control in speech therapy. Dworkin, J. P. (2003) - Offered comments on the role of the mandible in speech production, emphasizing the impact of mandibular control on articulatory development and speech disorders. Marshalla, P. (1982) - Discussed tactile-proprioceptive stimulation techniques in articulation therapy, including the use of bite blocks to assess jaw skills. These studies and articles provide a foundation for understanding the clinical significance of jaw grading and stability in speech and feeding therapy, supporting the use of Jaw Grading Bite Blocks as a therapeutic tool.

Sarah and I were trained by the same professor, Ed Mysak, from Columbia University. Much of her theory and practice is based upon principles taught including the concept of tactile proprioceptive feedback, auditory feedback, infantile reflexology, associative movement patterns and isolation movements. Her oral sensory processing techniques , assessment of the impact of hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity and jaw stabilization, have everything to do with speech and feeding. Her techniques have been facilitating decreased lingual protrusion of Down's syndrome children. Introduction of her sensory and motor programs early in life have resulted in astounding outcomes where Down's Syndrome children no longer have to be plagued by a tongue sticking out of their mouth. Regardless of " the research" it is clear that the phonologists ( as per Dr. Ron Baken, Speech Scientist from Columbia) would have you believe that speech sounds are generated from the head outward and have nothing to do with the neuro, oral motor development system. The issue is being able to accurately assess your client, determine what is contributing to their spitting food out of their mouth, not transferring food posterior , loss of food and fluid through inadequatelip seal, not unlike what we experience with adult neurological clients. Why exactly would anyone assume that these issues are not transferrable to the developmental population? Regardless of whether or not they have a "dysarthria" per se, as in the CP population, if the oral motor system has not matured to the degree that it can regulate sensory input, isolate, tongue, lip and jaw , the outcome of tongue tip production sounds, low lying frontal tongue , etc become highly relevant. I have used her products, suscribe to her system 100 percent and have had outcomes. Thank you Sarah for operationalizing the theory that we were taught by Ed Mysak who we hold so dear in our memories.
