the republic of me

Welcome to the.republic.of.me

This is a vlog / journal /podcast about making things.

My name is Ivana, I'm an artist and I live on an island in the Mediterranean with my husband, our two sons, and quite a few animals.

Knitting, spinning, painting and growing a garden are part of my everyday life, so documenting this journey feels like a good way to share the things that I do, take time to focus on raw beauty of simplicity , while at the same time keeping myself organized and accountable.

Thank you for taking your time to visit the channel and I hope you enjoy it.

Visiting friend in Cyprus at the moment and was hoping to bump into you ! The people here are so friendly, the fruit is literally falling off on the pavements, the sea is magical, the food is delicious and a real treat to see traditional embroidery and lace jewelry. And yes it’s cooking hot ! Thank you for your lovely podcasts.🌸

What a Nice podcast Ivana ! I have a lot to share ! IT is so important to take the opportunities that life throws AT us. We Never know what the futur Will bring. I had a dream of living in Egypt, because I'm obsess with it's history. So I did study egyptology , went to live in Paris, met my husband Who was an egyptologist and we Lived on Egypt, a fantastic ( AT Times very challenging ) life. Then, I got MS and my hubby died AT 44 years old. I came back to Canada. I don't have regret, I had the life I wanted. I always Tell Everyone to go and chase their dreams ! Don't Wait. I clearly understand the wave of hot air !!!! Even in the house , IT was sometimes so hot ! The AC wasn't able to cool down huge open Room. I remember saying AT the END of october, OMG it's only 39 degrees today 😂😂😂 Now, in Québec we died if it's 39 !!!! And I Do like this Side of you with the numbers. Mine are 4 and 13. Thanks for another very Nice podcast. It's really entertaining that you mix IT all together , vidéos of your life and knit. Take care !!!

Hi Ivana, your scarves are beautiful, I really enjoy garter stitch, so therapeutic to knit. I’m just the same with numbers, particularly even ones so 4 and 8 are favourites. Mind mind is full now of all the combinations of yarn I could use to knit garter scarves. Thank you for another lovely video. 😊❤️

The feeling of the hot air washing over you is so familiar. I am from Denmark originally, 4 seasons, mild summer about 25C on rare occasions more. At least from what I remember. Then I moved to the States, and I'm experiencing summers there are 40+C, and it's just too hot. So I am more or less only outside when I need to water my garden, other than that I live in the AC while I dream of winters. In summer, I more or less hibernate, and wake up when the cold hit. Love the big scarfs! I always knit them together in the bottom to make an infinity scarf, but maybe next time, I will just bind off and see how i like it. Can always sew them together if I don't enjoy it like that.

I just finished my first in and out raglan. The only adjustment I needed to make was increase a little more in the arms of the yoke😂 after it was done I realised it wasn’t really necessary but I wasn’t taking any chances with it not fitting my menopausal upper arms😂 I enjoyed the simplicity of your explanations. It’s a great recipe. I made it in a soft acrylic yarn simply because in South Africa, even though it’s winter it’s really warm during the day. I’ll probably try it in a silk/cotton blend next. Thank you for sharing it with us🌺

Here in Central Texas we have a lot of okra as well. Our favorite is to slice it lengthwise in quarters and roast it with a little olive oil, salt and pepper. It's crispy like chips. Takes just a few minutes in the air fryer and doesn't heat up the house.

I so needed this peaceful vlog. I’m sitting with my husband in his rehab facility. This was a welcome diversion. I would love a series of videos on the raglan recipe! Your shawl is stunning. Oh I do some bead work jewelry and my dad gave me an extra little fishing lure box. It is clear plastic and has little compartments perfect for beads. Your okra- do you pan stew it with tomatoes? Tell me you don’t boil it 😂- I just finished my first purl soho half and half triangle shawl - what a labor of love! I think shawls and wraps are equal in my mind. I would call my half and half a schlanket! Ginormous!! Thanks again ! You brought much peace and joy to a rather tense life I have at the moment. Much love to you always❤

Hair loss for me as well. I just wanted to give you some ideas for jewelry making containers. Try looking where they sell fishing supplies. They have plastic boxes that have little compartments and some even have the ability to move the dividers to the size of areas you need. They are similar to the pill caddies that are weekly or monthly. I hope I am making a clear picture for you. Love seeing you again and it’s always a pleasure to catch up with you.

BE CAREFUL WITH BIOTIN!!!! Biotin will cause bloodwork you might have done to give false/incorrect results. Tell your doctor you are taking it anytime they order blood tests. The doc may make you stop taking biotin for a few weeks before they try to do the tests. I found out the hard way. 😫

Usually when I see shawls on Ravelry they are either triangular or crescent shaped (my favorite), so I'm guessing that the rectangle would be a wrap. Decades ago I read a book by a woman named Paula Begoun called "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter without Me" (apparently it's in its 8th edition now!), in which she warned against sodium lauryl sulfate in shampoo. She said sodium laureth sulfate is okay, so I have always checked labels since then. I found the thickness of my own hair in my youth to be almost unmanageable, so I have welcomed some overall thinning that has come with age/menopause. That being said, I am very skeptical of topical products and would agree with some other comments here that you might want to get your hormonal status checked and then decide what you would like to do from that standpoint. (Average age of actual menopause is around 51, but symptoms can start several years before the "event.")

Ivana,it seems to me that so much of what you offer especially coming from your family room chats is not only inspiring but thought provoking/ stimulating. All of us appreciate your time and professional input. You are correct in sharing that there are a great deal of instructional videos available. Like your basket weaving sharing , you would bring is a bonding experience resulting in stimulating the art of creativity. Like so many others I was introduced to knitting , sewing, crocheting by my Mother creating an appreciation for learning a new skill a bond that has been enhanced in the past few years like you and others. Texas is a far cry from where you are and it is no longer 1945 but for me the exchange would be the same. It would be an afternoon of observing the joy one experiences in watching another process thru creating.
