    What the Discovery theme sounds like to me is a composer doodling of an afternoon. It just doesn't work. It's nothing. The final chord is just plain weird, drawing attention to what is, effectively, the whole piece's atonality in a way that just screams "why"? Musically, what is the intention behind that chord? To be jarring to the viewer? What for? It doesn't excite me to expect adventures. It doesn't make me sad. It doesn't make me horrified. It feels almost like "oh I need to end it somewhere but let's mix it up a bit for no reason". It's perfunctory and sloppy, which surely is NOT the feel you want to create going into each episode!

    Wonderful video. I've been playing the Rieger 1A for a long time successfully but I'd like a shape that would be a bit more helpful for the extreme upper register and a bit more "lighter" for tonguing. I tried the Thunemann shape and found it a bit on the heavy side. Although it does have a bit more power than the 1A. Thank you for sharing your experience.

  • @burnbassoon

    Have you tried a profile which has more of a defined spine (with the thicknesses along the spine remaining the same)?

  • @cmcas
    @cmcasАй бұрын

    @@burnbassoon I haven't given much thought to that. I'll definitely take your word on that for my next batch of reeds. But, again, have you tried or know of any shape that lends itself particularly to the upper register and/or to light/fast articulation? I'd like to know if there's/are a shape even if sacrificing a bit of sound in the low end. For me the 1A is a bit of a compromise, albeit a very balanced compromise. Thanks!

    Good video! I appreciate the tip profiler blade depth recommendation of .04mm. Do you have a recommendation for blade depth on a profiler? Thanks!

  • @burnbassoon
    @burnbassoonАй бұрын

    It also depends on the distance of the cutting plate from the blade. Some companies have too wide a tolerance to accommodate for 0.04mm. You may have to go to 0.02mm. Blade depth on profiler: no, only because I don’t have a reliable way to measure. I generally sharpen my blade after 40 reeds, so I can allow for quite a deep cut. I like to see the bark come off in one pass. That’s not really helpful, I know…

  • @jesseschartz
    @jesseschartzАй бұрын

    @@burnbassoon It's always nice to hear about other approaches. I've never really measured specifically for my profiler (Rieger) just adjust the blade height (new or sharpened) until it feels "normal". Always wondered if I should be more "scientific" with it. haha! Thanks for your quick reply!

    Excellent video my friend, spot on. I immigrated to Spain 30 years ago and people communicate differently. I actually often feel like a “Mid- Atlantic” citizen, both understanding and misunderstanding. The other point is written communication can be easily misinterpreted, even between friends, so being polite and succinct is the best.

    Hi Andrew, this is wonderful and as a professional oboe reed maker, I can agree that it makes everything easier and more satisfying to know a few things about the player who will receive my hand-made reeds. Luckily, I seem to have missed whatever social media excitement that motivated your making this film. Cheers to all the brave souls who dare to make and sell and send reeds to some of the most demanding clients there ever could be! I say this with respect and admiration for those discerning musicians who trust us to fashion what will become their voice, hopefully a true and authentic one! May these musicians know the power of communicating with us about their needs and desires.

    Really excellent video, thank you! I preferred the sound of the first model you played (the strict tip taper ones), but that's with the instrument being close mic'd. In a performance space with an ensemble I could see how it wouldn't necessarily be ideal. The 1a's were very good and I didn't like the fox 2 at all.

    I'd be very curious to hear this taper style with other shapes, like a tulip or Thunemann shape.

  • @burnbassoon
    @burnbassoon5 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching! The first model would be ideal in a small setting, especially if I scraped just a bit more, but in the context of a large symphony orchestra it can feel 'dead'. It can blend beautifully, but in louder dynamics it just doesn't have enough power for me to 'hold my ground', so to say, in the balance of the woodwind section. That's my experience, anyway.

    Love these videos, as it's helped guide the questions I've asked and answered for myself during my reed making journey. Since you raised the hypothetical, I'd like to say I've had success with a Fox K shape and FG1 tip template on a brand new Puchner model 5000. The low register especially I find to be tonally pleasing, resonant, and responsive. Playing second alongside a Heckel 5000 player on first on the Dvorak Cello Concerto this weekend and we've found it very easy to blend together.

    So how do you decide which type of gouging to use for a given batch of cane? Do you have to finish a reed completely and test its characteristics to decide which system to use for the rest of that batch?

  • @burnbassoon
    @burnbassoon5 ай бұрын

    Hi Yes, generally for a model I would make 5-10 reeds using my current setup and see how they turn out. If those on average felt very dark and ‘dumpf’ (Skinner terminology), or if I consistently had the tip opening I mentioned at the end of the video, then I would make 10 more reeds but with an eccentric gouge and see what happens. I hope that helps!
