My channel is mostly to do with plumbing repairs and new installs.I have been a plumber for 33 years and have seen some good and bad plumbing jobs over the years.If there is anything that I don't have on my channel; let me know and I will try my best to make a video to help you with your project. With all the advancements in supplies today; it is hard for the average homeowner to keep up with the most modern way (easiest) to repair or replace plumbing in their home.This channel is aimed to do just that along with a few of my own interests. My motto is "do it nice or do it twice".
I will give as many tips as possible to make your repair go easier.
I have been doing bathroom and basement renos for many years and will keep passing on my knowledge on these as well.
I have installed hundreds of hot water heating systems and try to keep up with the most up to date products.
I hope you enjoy my videos!

    Quick question; what if my moen cartridge is neither of these? It’s most like the 1222, but has wings at the outside end- still retained by a clip. The outer portion refuses to be rotated. Any ideas?

    @@TheOldkid888 Thank you for the video. It helped me decide to tackle the leaky faucet cartridge. Even though I was not able to break mine free via twisting, I was able to run a drill bit through each tab top and bottom and then pull out the pieces. So if you have a pull out handle its the 1225? Wouldn't each of these cartridges be for a pull out ?

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid8884 күн бұрын

    Hello Fireinahorn, That is correct. The 1225 is the cartridge that you pull out to turn on the water. Not sure if you see it in the video, but the 1222 is wider and you turn it to allow the water to flow. The 1222 is used for the newer model bath and shower faucets only. It is for the posi-temp faucet where the water temperature stays the same if someone turns on another faucet. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

    Not clear about the 1225 hot and cold

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid8888 күн бұрын

    Hello clydegrady1007, The 1225 cartridge is used for both sink and bath/shower faucets. It pulls out to allow the water to flow and turns to the right for cold and left for hot. If you have a Moen kitchen sink or basin faucet then the 1225 is what is needed. The 1222 cartridge is only used for bath/shower faucets, but it cannot be pulled out. You simply turn the handle counterclockwise to go from cold to hot water. It is only used in posi-temp faucets which keeps the water temperature constant. The two cartridges cannot be interchanged. Moen first came out with the 1225 bath/shower faucet all that was used was the 1225. The 1222 posi-temp allowed a person to get a shower and have a constant temperature even if another faucet was being used at the same time. This was many years later. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

    @@clydegrady1007 Sorry I got a little off track on that. Missed your drift all together. Unfortunately there is no way to tell when you are installing the cartridge. If you install the cartridge and the cold is on the left it is just a matter of rotating the canter brass stem 180 degrees. You only have to remove the handle, the chrome sleeve and take a pair of pliers and give the center stem the 180. Again...my apologize on the previous ramble. • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid888Ай бұрын

    Hello geefim2144, The faucet you have is the older style and uses the 1225 cartridge which you pull and push to operate. When you turn on the water elsewhere while in the shower the temperature probably changes as well. The newer model uses a 1222 cartridge and turns counterclockwise to open and adjust the temp. It also was designed so that the temperature remains constant no matter how many faucets are running elsewhere. In order to have the 1222 cartridge with the posi-temp you would have to change out the faucet unfortunately. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

    Thanks for making this video. I was wondering if you've been using the Kindred 1140 strainer? If so, do you think the Kindred 1135 or 1140 is better and why? I like how the 1135 has fewer parts to corrode but hate cutting plastic tailpieces haha. Thanks.

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid888Ай бұрын

    Hello shivraj67, Kindred strainers are great as far as I am concerned. I do like the 1135 better only because it's all plastic. I have never had an issue with them. I really like the design of the underside gasket as well and how it pulls up to bottom of the sink with the center nut. Only problem is it can be a little long for some applications and you sometimes have to either cut the tailpiece or go with a shorter strainer. I don't mind the 1140 either, but I prefer the 35. The 1135 has less parts and very easy to install. One thing I have found over the past 45 years at this trade is you only get what you pay for. You have probably come across strainers that have had white metal nuts on the tailpieces and the strainer itself rusting out. You have no worries with the 1135, no matter what kind of water goes down it. I know the 1140 should last as long as the 35. The jury is still out on that I believe. As long as the stainless quality is there, there shouldn't be an issue for years...if not decades. I have noticed a few items that I have installed that were supposedly stainless steel and rust forming on them shortly after. And these are reputable manufacturers that I have been using for quite some time. Not sure what is taking place, but I am going to drop them a message and pass this along. Like everything I guess they are trying to save a few dollars, but giving up quality at the same time. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

  • @TheOldkid888
    @TheOldkid888Ай бұрын

    Hello TheHappyDIYGuy-ri8nb, Let's put it this way. I would rather have my plumbing fixtures working than not. You are suppose to get your septic tank cleaned out every five years....standard practice. I live outside the city where there are hundreds (more like thousands) of septic tanks and not a single soul is ever worried about hair going into their tank. If the drain does not plug and runs continuously with no issues the hair goes down the drain anyway. The cost of getting the tank pumped is around $350 Canadian. I worry more about grease going down a kitchen drain than hair. Believe me I have been at this for over for decades and grease can be a nightmare as you probably know. Thanks for commenting and have a great week! Al

    I have to detach the hose, and your version "just add clamp" doesn't help--the plumber's clamp that I have on mine is a strip of metal with a fly arm cut out of centre, cinched tight and looking permanent! HOW did the person that hooked up the drain get that thing ON there? How do I get it off? Do I have to break it, and go out and buy an older style collar to cinch it? Did they get it on there with a specialized tool that regular people aren't liable to purchase?

    The one that you show, "that's a bushing," I am attempting to disconnect my under-sink dishwasher drain in order to remove dishwasher to replace the heating element. The hose must come off (to feed hose through cabinet wall; there is not enough play in the drain hose). There is a bushing style (like you show) that has drain hose-clamp, flat, firm, effectively unmovable in place (good; it won't leak), as maybe a plumber's-cinch (flat and a central bit, bent) and feels practically welded into place. As collars go, it has a metal cut-out fly-arm sticking up. I am tempted to wrestle it off, but then what do I do about putting it back on?, or something in it's place. Do I have to go out and buy a piece, or is this a think ONLY a plumber's tools can cinch into place?? Drain is great, don't want to wreck it. Can't get it off.

    Hello pedropdm0101, I have a few in the box and I generally use the 1/2" for situations such as this.3/8th can possibly work as well you just have to make sure the tool is perfectly straight when you are turning it, but my go to is 1/2. They generally come in a set although you can purchase them individually as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

    Delta is the worst junk made - after many years the outer retainer becomes frozen and nothing will remove it - you end up destroying the valve before it comes off. GARBAGE !!

    Hello user-ds8gq8mf8v, I have run into a few situations like you have mentioned. I am a Moen fan myself. Really like their products! Should be a spokesman for them!!! LOL At times Moen can be difficult to replace parts, but not nearly as tough as Delta in my personal opinion. A lot depends on water quality. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

    Hello GMC6969, You're welcome! Somethings in plumbing never change and this is a good example of one! A little grade is towards the outside is key! You don't want any water lingering in the faucet! That's where there will be a problem with freezing. Thanks for the kind words and enjoy your week! Al
