Well, the first paragraph is all about liberal democracies and their focus on individual rights. Life proved JJM wrong. Very wrong. Enough to look closely at rights violations and censorship of all media in US, Canada or EU. Another example is ongoing genocide in Palestine committed by israel and supported by Liberal democracies of the West. His thesis is more of a wishful thinking than the actual reality.

I like what John Mearsheimer has to say BUT I think he has a couple of things wrong. We did not make China rich by mistake. We did not make China rich so they can join the other industrialized nations so we can make the world safe for democracy... Let us take things from the beginning ... The opening of China started with the Nixon -administration . At that time we had two big problems . 1) The war in Vietnam and 2) the problem of inflation that had started with the "Guns and butter" of the LBJ policies We approached China ( the secret trip of Henry Kissinger to China ) and we pretended we were asking them not to allow USSR to supply N.Vietnam with weapons via China and in exchange we allow China to export to US products made in China ... Our real goals were different 1) To bring to US cheap consumer products as a measure that will help us fight the inflation... 2) To create unemployment in the US by exporting our light industry factories to China, as a means of fighting inflation. To weaken the trade unions and in general the US labor movement ... 3) OUR big corporations were salivating at the prospect of selling in the huge chinese market. "Just think if we could sell a coca cola a day to every Chinese person . I remember the Coca Cola CEO saying at the time in support of the Nixon "Open China policy' There was plenty of literature that was documenting this thinking at that time ... for example, have look at the book " Global Reach: The Power of the Multinational Corporations". by Richard J. Barnet, Ronald E. Muller. I do not believe we made a mistake. We did no go to china so we can make the word safe for democracy ... After all we are far from making USA safe for democracy ...

Ok...I accept that the US is trying to bring liberal democracy everywhere, and failing. But you have skipped India completely. India has a perfect democracy and the largest one at that. They elect their leaders and have rather excessive free press. India has never ever invaded any country. Why the US is trying to change the regime in India, using all means possible? Creating fake news and civil war situation? People of India has elected their government by 2/3 majority, twice and they are absolutely loving the present government. The problem with the US is that this government is refusing to tread the path set by them. So, it's not about setting up democracy all over the world. It's much more than that.

The voted for their leader bc they are scared to death of China. China is building up their Navy and that makes India anxious. The hierarchy of the 3 main goals of the monopolar phase of the liberal hegemon is slightly off. 1. Goal : Open up new markets and build close ties with foreign regimes if it is in the interest of the United States. This can be shortened to « hook the foreign regimes on capitalism » 2. Goal : Only if the local regime is unwilling to open up its markets and have friendly relations with the US, use the fig leaf of « spreading democracy » in order to slowly prepare a regime change (however, the goods and produce or the location of the country must be of strategic interest to the US, keyword : « protect American interests in the region »). 3. Goal : Get the country integrated into international institutions (a direct consequence of goal one). Now why would those mostly economic and strategic goals be limited to a monopolar world? The same goals can be pursued by a hegemon which is only regional. The same goals can even be pursued by an autocratic regime, it only needs to be powerful enough and instead of “spreading democracy” it will build bonds with other autocratic regimes (there is actually no need for a fig leaf stating "spreading autocracy" as those things are mutually understood) and help stabilize each other against third party interest such as those from the US.

America never really defeated fascism. It was the soviets. In fact American ruling class had moral support for Nazi Germany because it was opposed to the soviets. More over American foreign policies consisted of supporting fascists all over the world during cold and have supported genocides i.e Bangladesh. This bit of information was missing.

Maersheimer is a Putin apologist and a hopeless dreamer. He thinks if we reward Putin with land he will stop his conquest. Sorry mr Maersheimer, that's not how the world works. Please go back to your writing desk (and check is the latest Kremlin payments have come through) There is no neutrality if you are Russia's neighbour. Have a look at the map. You are either dominated and Russified (like Belarus) at war or occupied (like Ukraine, Georgia), in NATO, or strong enough to defend yourself. What Putin fears most is a succesfully democratic neighbour. Because then his own people will want that democracy too. Contrast that with non NATO countries that are surrounded by NATO like Switzetland, Austria, or untill recently Sweden. They live in peace and have good relations with NATO. I understand people need a different perspective and therefore listen to Maersheimer. And I understand it's an attractive perspective. One on which "we the West" did something wrong that caused the war. And in which we also could do something else to end it. It would mean that WE are in control. But this is a dreamers perpective. This war will not go away. Putin DOES have imperiiatic ambitions. And the best we can do is arm ourselves and our allies and hope the deterrent is enough.
