A really inspiring video -thank you ! just wondering if the what is the best wave of the voice is best for ambient sounds - square , triangle , saw etc sorry bit of a noob question .

I've dipped my toe in modular a few times, and have yet to REALLY dive in. The costs are just more than I can currently afford, so I end up spending more time with cheaper, simpler gear(or the Hydrasynth, which is a bit cheaper and not any simpler).

I can relate to your point of view. I complete maybe 25 - 50% less finished tracks than I did before I discovered modular synthesis in 2019. And between Eurorack and Bitwig polygrid (modular software), I have spent enough time that could have been used to write and release more tracks or EP's. Add to that the research and window shopping hours on youtube and I maybe could have writtent 2 or 3 albums in that time. However, Ive been a dedicated musician for 30+ plus years during which I have released around 60 electronic tracks, played in 10+ bands and co-wrote maybe 20 live music songs. Maybe Modular synthesis was an ideal novel avenue for exploration of the unfamiliar. Novel stuff is exciting for a dopamine starved brain that has played the same, genres beats, instruments and compositional structures for several decades non-stop. It must be acknowledged that youtube eurorack window shopping is a dopamine spiking/addictive experience that can worsen procrastination and decision paralysis too, but I am starting to wonder, as I am just about to invest thousands into Eurorack (after sellling it all because Bitwig & $$$) if the challenge of understanding modular concepts, both in eurorack and within software, if the whole endevour serves more of a purpose related to using my brain to problem solve by thinking about patching and sound design from within the framework of mathematics, boolean logic, electronic circuitry, neurochemistry (dopamine / GAS) all the while quenching the thirst of curiosity that "normal" or familiar music and methods of making music no longer can do - for me at least.

Thanks, I’ve actually moved this over to its own channels now with Jack. It was such a good laugh it made sense to make The Unpatched Show its own thing. I am going to do my own thing here with some more synth/production focused stuff.

Interesting to hear your thoughts but IMHO you should just ditch the disclaimers. I know there are always people complaining about anything anyone ever says on a video or writes. But I think you spend too much time assuring listeners that you aren't pushing your view, no opinion is wrong etc, then you risk your main message getting lost. People should stop acting like snowflakes and know when they watch a video that there will be personal opinions and there will always be some caveats.

Oh man this videos so old I can’t actually even remember what I said. I’m sure over time I became less worried about it anyway. I think around this time I was newer to the gear space & maybe my confidence grew with my authority in the space. All that aside; I’m not sure why I was so keen to really just share my opinion on particular pieces of gear. Even up the last few videos. I think as a wider part of the music making process, it’s interesting to explain how the gear is helping in context. But all these gear focused videos don’t really help anyone with writing or production. Only spending. I’m working on new videos but that focus around my workflow and process. And specifically to find the people who resonate with my music, values & practices. Not necessarily my opinions.

Good, common sense comments 👍 There's a weird trend of packing so much functionality into small modules that it rivals advanced keyboards or desktop synthesizers, but at what cost? Of course, at the cost of user interface and often reduced flexibility. It's a wrong idea, in my opinion. That's not what modular synthesis should be about. It should be about fun of turning simple elements into complex setups. More complex modules have their place, but without going too far into complexity and leaving the fun behind.
