THE HURRICANE RIDERS are a group of paddlers that are committed to making exciting and different ocean kayaking videos. We paddle, practice, teach and learn. We paddle in rough water, tidal current, wind and surf.

Don't mean to rain on your parade but these are not hurricane waves unless the hurricane generating them was a hundred miles away. The skills displayed in this video were impressive but the Aussie paddler Paul Caffyn launched and landed through far worse waves than this while paddling several thousand miles solo around New Zealand's South Island in the 1970s. And he was paddling a fully laden kayak, landing on rocky shores, and navigating waters populated with great white sharks and poisonous sea snakes. On one landing he actually had a great white attack his kayak! His book, "Obscured by Waves" makes for great reading as do his other books documenting equally impressive kayak circumnavigations in other parts of the world.

Paul certainly is an elite expedition paddler and sounds like a great guy. I like his response after Freya Hoffmeister promoted her circumnavigation around NZ South Island as the record for the quickest trip around the island. Paul replied that he didn't know it was a race. However, the Hurricane Riders are elite paddlers who have certainly paddled much rougher water than seen here. Here they were just playing in easy (for them) surf. I am sure their name wasn't meant to be taken literally; I don't know why anyone would think so - Paul Caffyn certainly wouldn't.

yakinsea Sorry about that I guess I did translate the name HurricaneRiders a bit too literally. In terms of Paul Caffyn's various remarkable skills and feats it might also be useful to consider that he paddled in these and worse conditions in a heavily loaded sea kayak, sometimes after having paddled in difficult conditions for many hours. And he did it day after day after day after day! Again I don't wish to minimize the skills of the folks in this video but I must admit to thinking that there is a world of difference between exhibitions like this and real world day to day difficulties encountered on long, difficult and tiring journeys. As I pointed out in a review I wrote on "Obscured by Waves" for Canoe Magazine the difficulties Caffyn faced and overcame while making his epic circumnavigation of New Zealand's South Island were simply astounding!

I never met Paul but I reviewed his book "Obscured By Waves" detailing his circumnavigation of New Zealand's South Island for Canoe Magazine here in the USA. Frank Goodman, the owner of Valley Canoe Products who supplied Paul with his Nordkapp is a friend of mine and we have discussed Paul's various expeditions. So I do recognize Paul is from NZ.

Pretty hard on your bottoms sometimes, sliding down natural abrasives like coastal rocks. I could not do ANY trick you do when kayaking...wait, no. I could lift the paddle & ( if conditions are perfect)dip it in the water!

Was there a line in the song " west coast shit"I don't know but the music track really suited this all out kayaking. Never seen paddlers in the pocket of standing waves like these so I need to ask...how the hell did they get IN there , since you can't paddle hard enough across or against it. Did they drift downstream, then spin around to be surfing down a standing wave coming at them? INSANE& love the pink boat woman & you can see simply from her face how serious she is!!!
