    I wonder....just to play devil's advocate if the concept of biking as a means of transportation is hard for some people on a national level to grasp because in smaller cities, municipalities (and certianly rural areas), traffic is no where NEAR the insanity that our major metropolitan areas experience and the idea of biking anywhere seems outlandish to them because things like work and school can be 10+ miles away from them? It should be the federal government fixing these problems but with so many people who find the problem hard to conceptualize, I wonder if they will ever feel the push to do something about it??

    Most of America's land mass is rural, though the vast majority of our population lives along big cities, especially coastal cities. It absolutely is true that our experience and perception shapes our views and that we project out onto others our limited view. I was guilty of it as anyone and still can be. I refused to ride transit for a long time and had no idea of the benefit of it. But I think the answer is for us, ordinary people, to normalize taking transit, riding bikes, and making walkable communities. We have to take the step of making it appear normal, healthy, viable, and joyous. Organizing group bike rides is one such way of doing that. But for people in small and rural towns (who are outnumbered greatly by people in cities), I don't see why they'd see my pov because you're right, they would simply know driving. I'm not even saying driving is inherently bad. It can be great, especially for long distances and rural areas. I want a shift in how we view cars, transit, and livable communities entirely. You do that through popular culture, I believe. Make movies and stories where these are featured. Make KZread videos about them. Advertise them. Why do we have such ridiculous, expensive, and bombastic car ads and billboards for car dealerships, but nice like that for bikes or metro? We mostly don't even question how much of our land is dedicated to maintaining cars with mechanic shops, tire shops, gas stations, dealerships, and parking. So we have to change on a visceral level people's perception of normal and open their mind to better possibilities.

    You ask anyone about 911 and they will say how horrible it was. 3000 people died in 911 but significantly more die in simple things like car crashed but very few things are done about it.

    Blame the DPS for handing out licenses like candy. It’s so ridiculously easy to pass the driving test. I’ve had a car and motorcycle license for years, and it’s stupid easy.

  • @FlyingOverTr0ut
    @FlyingOverTr0utКүн бұрын

    With respect, that is only one dimension to the issue. Because it begs the question, why do so many people want driver's licenses? Why's it so easy to get? Because our infrastructure is largely only navigable by car. You basically need a car to get around because we destroyed neighborhoods to pave giant streets and highways, and we gutted and sabotaged public transportation, which would make it easy to get around without it. Car advertising is so prevalent that getting around by car isn't given a second thought and is normalized even though many people shouldn't be driving. There's also the issue of which streets are dangerous; this isn't just a problem of of bad drivers randomly scattered around the country. There are high death, high crash corridors that have been unsafely designed and prioritize speed over safety that consistently see the highest rates of deaths, injuries, and crashes. That simply doesn't happen at nearly the same rate on safe streets that have more narrow design, that are more pedestrian and bike friendly, and where bus and metro service is prioritized. This requires so much more consideration than just who gets a driver's license because if you don't need a driver's license to get around, that does away with much of that issue. And then there's the car industry lobbying against public transportation and spending so much on advertising that depicts cars as being an expression of one's personality in which you drive at high speed with virtually no other drivers around, and people buy into it, wasting so much money on cars, needing to live further from their jobs because they can't afford housing close by, and cities going broke because of these spread out cities. Etc. We need to go all in to prevent another 42,000 deaths. Also, riding a motorcycle is a great option. I'm scared of riding them and don't want to deal with the cost of them, but I encourage people to ride them and be safe. I love seeing motorcycles and scooters on the road.

    @@FlyingOverTr0ut You know what? I actually agree with your response here. You made a good case that logically tracts, and were respectful with that response. With that said, I’ve visited Europe (Germany mainly) multiple times, and I noticed the differences in roads and structure even with the autobahn. It’s a different mindset all together that here in the states, we simply do not have. Areas where cars cannot drive at certain times was something I had never seen before going there. I agree with your stance on infrastructure, however without massive upfront cost and construction, that will not change. I’ve found motorcycles to be great options for me in Texas. Zx14r, vstar 1100, and a z650 all handle highway speeds fine, but are definitely dangerous. I lost 15% of the skin on my body to these bikes, along with TBI’s, liver damage, and broken bones. I understand why some people don’t want to ride, especially with the drivers that are on the road. Right now the States are on a downswing big time, so time will tell how that impacts peoples day to day. Cars are only an option to those who can afford them.

    Here's the thing with this argument. Who pays for the roads with gas taxes & vehicle registrations. Additionally, even gas & vehicle registration taxes, supplement the public transit systems, with most buses being exempt from vehicle registrations. Bikes especially, pay zero for building and maintenance of the roads, yet still want to be considered vehicles on them. Also most don't even follow the rules of the road and ignore basic traffic control rules.

    Seem to have a hard time overcoming last 5 years, more frequent lately, comes on nearly pass out erratic thoughts panic disorder, after a while dissipates returns to normal for a while then back again, I don't understand, if it returns to normal why the heck doesn't it stay that way? I don't get it. It's back to normal why does it have to go off, there's no logical reason for it, I don't want testing or doctors or anything invasive because the medical industry are butchers. I just use whatever is available from pharmacy and nutrition, I try to help my body self regulate homeostasis eventually it's got to stay normal for the duration of the lifetime whatever plans there are to complete.

    I understand what you are saying. My city I live in started this project in December of last year. The city decided to put roundabouts on 4 intersections on the main street of the city. The city was given a grant from the state. The grant could only be used for the roundabouts. This was supposed to be done in April of this year. It's still not done to this day. It's hurting the merchants in the city. I'm not going downtown at all. It's to dangerous. Then the city will turn around and tax us for there stupidity. As you can see I'm not to happy about the roundabouts and the city for there stupidity. Lately I've been thinking about getting a bicycle.
