I believe that is why the medieval Japanese invented the 6' to 7' inch wooden Yawara stick and the Koreans invented the 12' dan bong wood stick for specifically self-defense. They wanted an object that would have been ridiculous to use as an offensive weapon, yet highly effective in personal self-defense and protection situations. The two sticks would be looked upon as completely harmless objects then and now.

I've read and seen similar boxing advice for self-defense. It follows the principle of KISS. Given a fundamental knowledge of boxing and some practice, I heard the following. Use left-hand jabs defensively, keeping an attacker at bay. Jab, jab, jab, and right cross to the chin. Purportedly this also works well against multiple assailants, quickly moving from one to another, taking the initiative against them. Of course this still takes instruction and practice. On the opposite side of the coin are those who do not recommend boxing punches as it takes too much skill and the unprotected fist can be easily damaged and the wrist is vulnerable to damage. Reportedly the great Mike Tyson broke a knuckle or finger in a brawl outside a Las Vegas casino back in the late 90s. These self-defense exponents recommend limiting hand strikes to: edge of hand, palm strikes, hammer fist strikes. Possibly consider the martial art slap, the open hand slightly cupped, fingers closed. The striking area is the slightly cupped palm preferring the outer edge of the palm. This slap strike can break a jaw or rupture an eardrum. It is used in Southern Mantis Kung Fu and original French Savate from the early 19th century as Napoleonic Law defined the use of the fist as the same as using a weapon like a club or rock. Disclaimer: I am not a martial artist nor self-defense expert. I am repeating advice I saw on the Internet and social media. You bear all responsibility for yourself and what you do to others.

What a coincidence, wrestling and grappling are two massive parts of my martial art. Just like most martial arts which have remained functional rather than morphing into ritualism.

While it is a difficult book at places, it was definitely one of a kind for me, an awakening experience for most if not all actually. I suggest it for you and your viewers.

My oersonal background was i satrted in karate aged 7 mived on to japanese jujitsu and judo then I took up training with my cousins who both were in the armed forces and in the SAS and learned from them what does and does work. I have only ever had 3 maybe 4 fights in all my life all but one in the schoolyard and i am glad i had my cousins show me what does and doesnt work in a real world application setting. They like you said pretty much the same thing that you need to be able to master all of those 3 things and that there is no actualmine style that will win every time on its own!

Bujikan is definitely not a waste of time. BUT it does take time and knowledge to be able to use those skills if needed in real life . Like with all ninjutsu combat systems ! In my own humble experience, I started really appreciating bujikan based systems when I got a little older and had more experience in combat systems in general .

Good tip. However, you will find very few videos that tell you the absolute basics of how to engage when it’s a question of fight or flight. These guys are experts and so they can identify their targets and hit them with precision. This takes years of knowledge and practice but seems so easy on the screen. Almost all strikes are to the head and upper body and therefore also look impressive. These exercises are for the Dojo, not for street emergencies. Hitting others in the face is definitely not recommended - these days there are always those with phone cameras and that sort of evidence if the police turn up will always go against you initially - although it’s a natural instinct when we give in to our emotions instead of keeping focused on the main aim and that is to injure your opponent correctly so as to then go to the next phase which is flight. Dropping someone to the floor and then going down with them is also a no-no in the street, the most unsuspected individuals could join in and speed of execution is your goal. Now, the most important thing to keep in mind is that someone with an injured leg can’t run. This must be your priority: neutralize the leg. One leg is enough and the advantage is that there are two of them, versus one head, so you can choose whichever side suits you best. When confronted raise the arms as if to offer surrender. This catches the opponent off guard, keeps your head protected and also acts as an upper body stabilizer for the kick. Don’t kick with your toes out in front - much the same as with the hand; fingers and toes break with relative ease, that’s why punching isn’t recommended and open palm strikes are - use the heel instead. A sideways motion catching and displacing the kneecap is ideal. If you miss, you’ll at least have made the leg double sideways and if not breaking something is at least extremely painful; a straight blow to the knee will make the opponent feel sick and if hard enough will have them out of the game for long enough for you to get away. Also, on camera, it doesn’t show you to be either an expert or willing to inflict purposeful injury, rather a clumsy, spur of the moment way out. Now start practising at home so your “clumsiness” is highly effective. Like the man said, the more you do it, the better at it you are.

I didn't want to write, but... You forgot something in your "equation"... Every fight is a unique "problem" and a good martial arts Master is only going to give you tools to "solve the problems". None of them has the absolute answer, but if someone told you that or you think like that, sorry but that's wrong, unfortunately, very wrong! If someone thinks that a kenpo/hapkido/taekwondo/jiujitsu/boxe (bla bla bla whatever) full technic is the answer for a "problem", please don't waste your Master's time and energy to try teach you something. Everything depends on how you are going to use what (and if) you learned something. One time someone said "Brains before Bullets", and this you can apply to everything 😊

The word Kempo is just an umbrella term encompassing different martial arts, such as Shorinji Kempo, American Kempo, Okinawan Kempo and Nippon Kempo: all of them are completely different martial arts! I think (and I am not the only one) that Nippon Kempo is very effective in real fighting even more than the overestimated MMA, Boxing, Full Contact, etc! Also Kudo seems to be quite effective.

Train how you fight is the most valuable maxim. If the move doesn't work against a resisting opponent then it doesn't work. All of the successful martial arts share common elements. They spar often and get their practitioners conditioned for fighting. Then they refine their techniques over time based on how the fights are turning out.

@@CombatSelfDefense "This is such a false equivalency. I’ve equally avoided aikido, and I’m still alive." yeah, maybe for now ... assuming of course you won't allow your bjj/mma ego to bite you in the ass one day, you can choose to ignore it but the results do not lie my friend, in the past 2 years 3 bjj/mma champions were killed because of ego, 1 more hospitalized for the same reason and guess what: no aikido, no bujinkan, no karate no tma anything ... and why is that? because unlike bjj/mma, they do NOT have a false sense of reality, they do NOT have a misplaced superiority complex and they DO NOT look down on other people just because they're not practicing their style ... in tma, people respect one another, they do not try to one-up eachother in any kind of way, they do not have this machismo BS in their blood to shittest everyone else to pat themselves on the back like you are doing now, as usual you only see things from 1 narrow-minded POV which is "can my style kick the other guy's ass or not" ... there are ways around that: getting jacked, surround yourself with friends backing you up at all times, weapons, you name it, ego on the other hand cannot be avoided or controlled when you're team mma/bjj, and ego is the killer, let's just hope for your sake you won't have to find out the hard way ... as for your other reply, I don't start a youtube channel for the same reason you DID start a youtube channel: because I know people are generally ignorant morons who only care about the mainstream stuff, whichever is omnipresent and popular, starting a channel in order to help people spreading the awful reality of self defence won't amount to anything because people won't click on it because I don't preach mma, I don't preach the Gracie Kool Aid, I don't preach whatever is trendy out there, you claim I'm not helping anybody and I'm only amusing you, dude, I don't give a flying F about you or your channel, you're missing the whole point and the point is WHY DRIVE WHEN YOU CAN GET DRIVEN you claim I'm just alerting you, giving you the attention you want and while that may indirectly be the case that's completely irrelevant to me, you could make a billion dollars for all I care it won't change a thing you're still an ignorant douche, what is relevant to me is if I can reach even one person out there and keeping that person from making the same mistake people like Leandro Lo and Tiago Guma made, I will already have served my purpose, I will already have contributed my part to the self defence community and I will already have contributed far more than you and your bjj/mma propaganda scam channel ever will have, the irony of it all is that you claim you live rent free in my head and that I'm just helping your channel by keep posting my takes on things, but in reality you're the big youtube guy who keeps replying to a so called channel-less nobody ... which leads me to believe I must be doing something right because you take time to reply and therefore, whether you like it or not, apparently I do bother you, otherwise you would just ignore me, and while you believe I'm just supplying your channel, it is in reality me who's using people like you with mainstream popular youtube channels to take advantage of this fact and use your channel to spread my message, knowing that even without a youtube channel of my own, it would prove far more fruitful than start my own channel and spread the message that way, with videos nobody will give a flying F about ... why would I bother doing that if I could just take someone's channel that already has tons of watchers and subscribers and spreading the message that way, knowing that at the very least people are watching my message whether they like it or not, if they choose to remain ignorant or stigmatize me or ignore me so what lol that's the default response I would expect from most people anyway even if I did have my own channel, it's a win win situation for me lol, so in a way I should thank people like you (you'll understand if I don't) for granting me the free opportunity to spread the message of real self defence without me even having to lift a single finger, and the more you reply, the more I know my message stings and the more still I will continue to do it, that's how winning is done, persistance, something you clearly know very little about (that's how you never went past brown belt in Bujinkan and simply chose the bare minimum mainstream bjj/mma easy way out instead, like you and millions of others: a dime in a dozen) ... face it friend, you are nothing but a tool to get the real message across, too bad only the happy few will take the time to absorb the widsom and better their lives instead of ending or severely reducing their lives the way people like you do because fame because money because glory ... none of this will matter when you end up in hospital while beaten comatose, in a wheelchair with CTE or worse still ... DEAD ... do with it as you will, in any case I will keep spreading my message so be a good boy now and keep posting ignorant videos for me to use against you and get my point across :) ...
