Brings back memories! I grew up in Converse. Dad was stationed at Randolph AFB. Those were very good times.

I saw a few of those barracks when I went through in 86. I visited two months ago and recognized less than a 10th of any buildings. A handful of wood structures for heritage but mostly modernized facilities. My barracks ( modern for 1986 )was still used. Buildings get older and become more difficult and expensive to keep. But if it makes you feel better, often new buildings are build with massive issues by incompetence and wastefulness. I was in for 31 years and enjoyed my first 6 or 8 the most.

I was born in 1955, and Lackland still looked about the same 17 years later when I showed up there. The recruiter gave me a brochure that showed beautiful new dormitories, but I got stuck in one that looked to have been built during WWII. The Air Force was great though, I stayed 24 years, 1972-1996.

Had the same experience in 73 Brother. Got there at bout 9pm In January. It was cold, bout 45°, misty, all of us standing there under a street light waiting on our TI. Reminded me of a scene from an old war movie. Our dorm was at the edge of the squadron and off in the distance I could see the new dorms. I remember thinking, what the hell's going on, they've put us in the wrong place. But hey, looking back, I wouldn't change a thing. Guess I'm getting old, can't for the life of me remember the Squadron number. Oh well, keep flying high.. 🚬👓...

@@captainjohn7833 I did get to see the new dorms everyday when we went to chow, but never saw the inside of them. I was in 3706 BMTS, Flight 1313. The TI always told us 1313 was fitting because we were the worst ones he ever had. He told us the same thing on the day we were leaving. We were pretty bad, but I bet he told every flight that. 😊

@@utapao74 3706 seems very familiar to me. Could've been it, that would be crazy huh, if we'd been in same one. Same here on the chow hall. Except a couple of times when we were out of the area. We used an old one that looked like it had been built at same time as our dorms. You're probably right, he probably did say that to every Flight. I remember we made Honor Flt. Toward the end, which was more trouble than it was worth. They expected us to maintain that level from then on. Tech School was a real shock after basic. It seemed so much more relaxed. 🚬👓...

@@utapao74 I started to go for that when I enlisted, but my buddies talked me out of it. Saying crap like, man you don't wanta be a cop for four years. Like a dummy I listened to it. Only thing available at the time, so the recruiter said, was metal processing and maintenance which sent me to Chanute AFB in Illinois for 3mo. Ended up with Combat Engineers. Anyway, gotta get the day rolling. Good talking to you Bernie. Remember, no matter where you go, well, there you are. 🇺🇸... 🚬👓...
