Hey I love your videos and your enthusiasm and energy and creativity ❤ Whitcher was and still is one of my favorite fantasy book series. For me it was very entertaining and I absolutely loved the characters and was deeply emotionally invested throughout the whole series!!! (Don’t understand how some people may find it boring??) When it comes to the Netflix adaptation I just watched a couple of episodes and was very unhappy because I am such a big fan of books. I don’t think they did books justice. Anyways books are amazing, beautifully written, characters are so deep and layered and flawed and even though they are “magical” they are very human and relatable, and the story for me keeps getting better with each book (or maybe all books are equally good?) I hope more people read them!

Disliking a character that happens to be female doesn’t automatically make someone misogynistic. The “lack” of diversity just because there’s only “white” characters doesn’t mean it lacks diversity. There was tons of diversity in Tolkien’s world. It’s not a problem if there’s only white characters, all green, all black, etc. Your insights are superficial and only skin deep, in other words the insight of a self hating white liberal. Basic.

Another amazing sci-fi book series is The Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson; three books and a collection of short stories covering an incredible range of subjects, from hard science to economics, sociology and politics (also, if you've played the Terraforming Mars board game, the Mars Trilogy was definitely an influence!)

Rhianna Pratchett cut all ties with The Watch; the studio and showrunners did an Ursula Le Guin on the Discworld IP. When it comes to reading Nightwatch, I'd recommend reading the other Watch books first as the impact of meeting certain characters from the earlier books when they're younger is so much more significant. The audio books are also excellent.

Can I recommend Expeditionary Force series (18+ books) by : Craig Alanson. One of the most interesting series as it sets Earth as total underdog in a very very dangerous believable universe where the main characters are trying to keep an unaware Earth from destruction. I think better to listen to rather than read because R.C. Bray narrates it so good.

Great video, you made a bunch of great points. Now I've never been in any of those bubbles to start with (mainly because there was no internet back then), and because of the things I grew up with reading, I was always fascinated with foreign cultures and their history and customs. This said, reading fantasy also always was kind of a comfort thing for me to read, so yes, most of it would fall into the western/european fantasy category. Luckily I stumbled over Locus Magazine, and those people not only cover everything that's going on in the worldwide SciFi/Fantasy/Horror community (new releases, awards other news), they also showcase the diversity within those genres and have really well-written reviews about great books you will rarely stumble about in the BookTube/Tok/whatever spheres. And as they also focus on literary excellence, I've yet to read something recommended by them that I would DNF because it's badly written.

I haven't picked up this series because of what I've heard about the sexism in particular -- I don't think it necessarily sounds horrifically offensive, but the type of stuff that would at the very least make me roll my eyes back into my brain 😆 oooh that's a nice quote from Pierce Brown!

Your video made re-read Mistborn:Final Empire. I read it, thinking it was too My Fair Lady. I liked Kelsier. I didn't care for Vin or Elend. The rest of the crew was fine. But your video has made me go-read the book to see what I was missing.

It took me 3 goes to get through the Hobbit as a teenager, which I did quite enjoy by the end. I’ve never made it through the first book of LotR. It just felt like “band of people walk a long way (soooo much walking), are attacked, are rescued, recover. Rinse and repeat”. I REALLY want to love it but it just doesn’t do anything for me.

i just bought this book today n read for 2 hrs already.....i cant see how someone can call it YA cause it really dips into adult content but this is coming from a mom whose 9 year old girl wants to read a Colleen Hoover book! 💀🤢 New adult is much better 👍

Honestly, I love the tropes of this series. It's refreshing to have something that isn't just plot twists or overly complicated characters for no reason other than to be different. I love the traditional male and female roles. You can have loads of other book series that are progressive in their ideas, but it's quite refreshing to have a baseline fantasy series. Even though there is a strong female character who has an entire trilogy about her, it's not enough for some, which is why progressives always go too far with moving the goalposts. Raymond is a legend for creating a very tropey, massive high fantasy world that others will enjoy for the rest of time since he actually finished it.

I think there should be a bigger disclaimer on the Detta character and racial slurs lol. That also goes into a discussion about his black characters, in general. There is a video essay called Stephen King's Magical Negros on the Streetlight Guild's channel that does a really good deep dive by a longtime black King reader. Great video by the way.

Good to see a fair review of this series. I finished the trilogy earlier this year, and think your review of the philosophical themes and plot are spot on. I enjoyed reading each book, but thought its conclusion elevated the whole story.

The book Planet Narnia has an intriguing thesis - that Lewis's Narnia books reflect the heavenly planets of Medieval cosmology and theology. And of course, before he was a children's writer, Lewis was a scholar of Medieval and Renaissance literature at Oxford University and later the first chair of the same (created for him) at the University of Cambridge. 😊
