    Hey, I just tried sup foiling on flatwater with the 115l version of the Duotone Downwinder and the Fanatic high aero aspect 2000 wing for the first time, but after a couple strokes the board immediately turns and doesn’t go straight. I have a 75cm mast, so it’s quite confusing. Any tips?

    Really interested to try this out. I’ve been using the James Casey tip to use a loose grip on the bottom hand so as to allow it to float when you paddle and find a natural spacing to balance power and reach for the catch. I’ve found doing this I naturally have a narrower grip width which actually helps me generate more power whilst maintaining balance. It’ll be Interesting to compare to your method here!

    Sometimes I’ll dropped my hand about an inch below the tape for the first two strokes and gradually work my hand up as I gain speed. Once on foil I’ll move my hand to about two inches above the tape for paddling and pumping

    @@PaddleWithRiggs thanks that’s really interesting! Sounds similar to the loose grip technique (well worth experimenting with - just hook your fingers over and don’t tighten the grip) The paddle shaft in the video looks really long, is this your preference at the moment? I’ve settled on a really short length ( about eyebrow height) as I’ve found it easier to get a higher cadence which helps me generate more board speed.

    My paddle is 3 inches above my head. I find it hard to get the reach I prefer with a shorter paddle especially in the bumps

    This is great. How long is the paddle in relation to your height? I've been surfing SUP for a long time, but with a longer paddle... about 6" above my height. I hear all you guys are running shorter paddles now.

    @@PaddleWithRiggs Ah cool. That's actually slightly longer than what I've been hearing other guys using. All I've heard so far is anywhere from head-high to an inch under your height. I might try to get a hold of an adjustable paddle before I go cut my nice Kialoa... But I think that if I go from my current 6" over my head to 3", I'll like it regardless... it's not that huge of a difference as going head-high.

    @@PaddleWithRiggs Thanks Jeremy, I am 61 years old with 10 years of SUP surfing experience and was inspired by your KZread tutorial videos to start SUP foiling. I ordered a KT Ginxu Dragonfly Surf 7'10, 110ℓ with NAISH JET HA1840 foil, I am 70kg in weight. The foil was the largest set available at the nearby shop here in Japan. I hope this choice is okay for me. I can't wait for them to arrive. I will continue to practice by watching your videos over and over again!

    What do we call this move? Not a “Flatwater Paddle-up”, since that’s already taken, and assumes using a sup paddle.

    The hydrofoil creates enough lift to get the board off the water and eliminates drag. The wind swell has enough energy to keep the hydrofoil moving

    This looks soooo much harder on a barracuda than a KT. All that flat area on the bottom of the B, you can really see it stick to the water in this video. Have a look at the same effort on the KT, I doubt Gwen is any better at this than Jeremy. about 14 seconds for Jeremy, 9-10 for Gwen, maybe 7 seconds for Balz (no idea what board?), kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKR6stShYt3Fqbg.html kzread.infoR2ydUb4F0fM If I was trying to decide what board to get (and I am), c'mon, what would you get?

    Greetings! I am 41 years old, weight 85 kg, height 174 cm.. I have 3 years of experience with a paddle and wine, but no experience with hydrofoil. I want to do downwind on the river with a paddle in flat and downwind especially. I'm afraid to make a choice, I'm especially worried about the width of the board, so that it won't be too difficult if it's narrow for me. Therefore, I am not considering the 8'×19' 5 option yet, is it really so difficult for a beginner to stand on a long and narrow board? And therefore it is worth choosing on Kalama E3 6'5×23'5' 116 liters. Will this be enough for a beginner's stability? Or there is a Kalama 6'5×27'5 , 130 liters.? What is your opinion? The main goal is downwind on the river.

  • @PaddleWithRiggs
    @PaddleWithRiggs4 ай бұрын

    Hi @wingfoil, I recommend going longer and narrower. It’s so much easier to learn on a longer board. The 8’ x 21.5” x 111 liters Kalama Barracuda or something similar should work well for you. It might take some practice to get used to balancing but if you use a big foil it will add a lot of stability. Ideally you might want something closer to 115-120 liters for your weight while you learn. Just avoid boards with a round bottom. Round bottom hulls are not beginner friendly.

    Hello again Jeremy This video is a real gem! I think I have watched it more than 50 times and I am still coming back to it. I got a KT Ginxu 105L a month ago and have been out 5-6 times practicing . I don’t have the explosive power to get up yet but have been focusing on the back leg/knee action to feel the pop and definitely making progress. I am 145 lbs and using the 1150 Axis front wing and also tried my friend’s 1310 Axis front wing but actually prefer felt better with the 1150. Should I just stick to the 1150 or still consider bigger front wings like the GT2600? And I am still not entirely sure what you meant by the paddle stroke being twice as fast as recovery 🙏
