    Hi Herb, I believe this video has provided one of the answers to selecting a route to what to do next. I have a Rokinon 135mm lens f/2.0 but never knew it could be used like this. I see from the Nexstar FB group that you have had the Rising Cam for many years and it looks like it has paid off. I am overloaded at the moment with the plethora of cooling cameras out there and which one to go for. on say 0:51 of the video, it appears you have made a improvised cardboard barrel for the lens. Is this for dew purposes? Also, in your description above, you mention a 3D printed Bahtinov mask. Would you know were I could find the file for this? (If willing to share of course). Oh yes, nearly forgot, were can you buy the dovetail and straps that go around the lens? Thanks

  • @HerbsGarage

    Thanks, glad it helped ! Yes I do have two Risingcams 571 24Mp (bought six months apart) and they worked perfectly for me, so far :-) I recommend getting the AR glass one and then add your own (SVbony) 2" IR filter. Yes the simple cardboard barrel on the Rok lens is for dew and stray light reduction, the dew heater strap is the $20 one from SVbony on Amazon. The 3-d printed Bahtinov mask file was downloaded from thingiverse, I have a 3d printer and adjust the diam. accordingly (sometime even trial and error). Nice Bahtinov masks can be found for $12 on Aliexpress. I will add links below. Lately I have been tempted to get the $800 RisingCam imx294 9Mp cooled camera as a third camera, which is half the price of the imx571 26mp one.

    I focus with a Bahtinov mask, I 3D printed one out (paper works too) and it's very easy to use. The camera (here RisingCam) you just plug it in and then use the software that comes with it (RisingSky software) to view and adjust the image on any (Win) laptop. That is all I use, there is no magic. I don't rely on an endless collection of useless gadgets as some do. And I keep the software to a minimum, I am more interested in taking images than wasting time with nested layers of redundant software.

    Hello herb im totally a beginner im thinking about getting the svbony sv503 80ed or 102ed with the explore scientific iexos 100 tracking mount. Im on a tight budget 😂 so i dont want to spend too much money because im a beginner. Is there any advice or other gears would you recommend? Also how can you get those wonderful photos with high quality and detail do you track the object for too long? Or something else? Thank you for your time!

  • @HerbsGarage
    @HerbsGarage4 ай бұрын

    The 80 ED would be a good beginner choice ... I know nothing about that ES iexos 100 mount. I would also look at the SV48p achromat (which I have, see my video) paired with Skywatcher Star Adv mount (which I have), as a not-too-expensive foray into basic astrophotography. Also look at my videos for the 80 ED and 122 APO combined with the Celestron AVX mount, the latter a quality product at a reasonable price.

  • @dyazRO
    @dyazRO4 ай бұрын

    I had the iExos 100. Steer clear. The tripod is a joke, it's awfully shaky. Also, the tracking is not the greatest. Due to the driver board used for the stepper motors, the steps are fairly visible in the tracking. For anything longer than 200mm, I think that mount is a no-go. I think you'd be better off getting an EQ5 or even EQM35. I know they're more expensive, but you'll only end up getting frustrated if you go for the iExos 100 with an 80ED or 102ED. Also. 102ED is quite big, with a long-ish focal length (714) which is not really beginner friendly. I have a 102ED scope (TS, not SVOBNY, but it doesn't matter) and, without a sturdy mount, it's gonna be a challenge getting good pics. I am using it on an HEQ5 but that's a mount I got a while after dipping my toes in this hobby. Certainly not a mount to get when beginning, since it's expensive. Hunt for an EQ5 or EQM35 on the used market, you might be able to find one for less than a new iEXOS. So I'd suggest you go for the ED80, maybe even get the .8x reducer for a wider FOV, and get a different mount.
