    You use silicone for the rear structure? Not the red detroit stuff? I've always wondered if silicone would work better

    Had that done to me by a shop out in Houston Texas told me was freshly rebuilt, ready to rock ‘n’ roll one through two heads on it within two months. Call the engine apart pistons liners, all rusted out look like that thing was in our swamp water.

    Why would flammable paint be on something designed to block heat? That's why firewalls are not painted.

    That’s a lucky fix. That could have been a major job if it wasn’t that plug.

    Just get a new plug, it shouldn't be leaking that bad that you can't drive it to get a new one, the old rubber gets hard over time and doesn't make a good seal.

    I had a tub of petroleum jelly in my toolbox just for seals and o-rings. Just a small film of any lubricant will work though. Also if it calls for a specific installer for the seal but or barrow it. Otherwise you will be doing the job again.

  • @ericstalker2635
    @ericstalker26353 ай бұрын

    First of all that's a nice seal installer. Always put a little grease or oil on the inner rubber of the seal. If your worried about the seal not staying in place, lock tight on the outside will work great. Careful not to get any on the inside of the seal.

    Some advice from building custom Cats and Cummins is all of those sealants are best for separate jobs, the Detroit is standard black gasket maker good for large flat areas like oil pans, the red is just high temp silicone that holds a little better than black does with heat, and the anaerobic is best for areas that take a lot to disassemble like the back of the timing cover on the engine side and you don't want it to ever leak in the truck. Just be careful with anaerobic sealant as it will eat into the parent metals and when removing it it tend to leave pitting in the surface. In my builds l always use the factory paper gaskets and use the smallest layer of black rtv on both sides, like a dot on my finger will do the whole from cover gasket, I've got many 3406E engines running around without a drop of oil leaking out the peanut cover or back of the timing case, and if you look at most E models/C15-C18 they all leak at those two places even when new.

    It's not that you need you to use silicone to install a crank seal it's that you need a small amount of lubrication,so it doesn't burn and deform the neoprene seal lip on start-up. This is the mistake people make When you add silicone and the repair takes a certain amount of time before starting the engine, the silicone has dried and cured this leads to the problem, when you start up the engine the dried cured silicone it's torn and running all around the seal lip, this creates the spot for it to leak a bit, because of silicone rubber now all under the neoprene seal lip. Now, this is not a tight seal anymore. this is why I would not use silicone to install any seal that is going to be rotated on, I just use lubricant. There are plenty of brands of rubber lubricants out there that you can use to install a crank seal

    Number 6 sure had a lot of oil coming out of the exhaust port. Could be diesel mixed with soot and that would mean a bad injector but pretty sure it was oil. Oil slobbering from the exhaust side isn’t to uncommon but that usually is from excessive idle times.
