    Because in a bathroom with restricted floor space as I had here, it allows the pan to go further back to the wall. It’s still working well. Never fails to flush.

    Hello. You are very welcome to use my clip. It was just something I saw when turning into the Costa drive thru. Could have all been avoided with a bit of tolerance and understanding. I think the car in the right had turned in on the wrong side of the road, blocking the egress of the car to the left containing Karen and Kevin who of course couldn’t control their temper. Not everyone behaves like this in England! Best wishes to you.

    Hi David, I had a similar problem and was wondering what might help when I say your video of 5 years ago. Then I suddenly remembered that I have one of those hand primers stored in an old coffee tin. I will give it a try and see what heppens, as it's been in the tin for probably about 15 years! I hope the insides are still working and not jammed lol

    Give it a try! I removed the primer bulb from the system eventually and I now use one of those little oil extraction pumps you see in Lidl from time to time. They run off the battery and suck the fuel through in no time. I carry it with me all the time now as well as a spare filter. Those Focus 1.8 fuel filters are such a faff to remove and reassemble eh! And really critical not to get air leaks!

    @@happydavid13 mate it's saved my job for me haha I would have never got car going without it! Put the clip on the fuel line and then the plug clip on the fuel in part of the filter and pump it until it gets hard... then unscrew the bleed screw slowly ontop of fuel filter housing then it will let you keep pumping more fuel into it!!! My pleasure mate and I got the name from Ricky gervais stand up shoe hahahaha

    @@sheffielduk3428 Well I’m delighted that you have found a way to get the car bled off and you out of a fix. Once you know how, these engines are not so bad to get running after a filter change, but you do need a few bits and pieces to suck the fuel through. As soon as you take the fuel inlet pipe off the filter housing, the fuel in that pipe drains back to the tank and fills with air. You’ve to just take a bit of time and care, make sure the fuel housing is screwed together correctly and that you can draw fuel through it to the point where all the air is sucked through. You are obviously a very sound fellow, very sound indeed! Thank you most kindly for your reply and additional info. Take care. David

    @@sheffielduk3428 HaHa! Yes. I’ve been caught out like that too. It’s a never ending stream of bubbles if you get that gasket wrong. That screw together filter is such a faff! I also have a Ford van with the same 1.8 engine but that has a much better filter. A sealed unit with the pipes fixed rather than the replaceable element type. How can you not get fuel all over the bloody shop when unscrewing that? Take care old chap! David.

    First thing to do with a 18tdci turbo diesel Ford focus is get a metal filter and a hand pump and some clear fuel line they are a good engine

    You are completely correct. The bleeding off can be a pain but these engines just run and run. Powerful and smooth. A real credit to Ford engineering.

    Yes Sir, I’d agree with you there. But those little hand pump bulbs and a bit of pipe are handy to carry around in the car just in case you need to change a filter whilst away from home. I know this doesn’t apply to everyone but I’ve been stuck once and my, was I pleased to be able to get the fuel system reprimed and running in a few mins (a leaking union was letting air in) But you are correct and I’m thinking of buying a suction pump for when I do the job at home.     @@boabm6522 Im on around 310,000miles and the engine is running like a new car. Beautiful ride. Unfortunately the old girl has just gone for MOT and it's touch and go whether it's economical to keep her on the road. Needs a bit of welding and a problem with the power steering fixing. I love the car, so will do my best to get her through. If not, I'm going to look around for another low mileage 1.8TDCI up to 2010, because after this date they started fitting the stupid problematic DPF. I also run a Transit Connect van, which has exactly the same engine. Thats on 150,000 now, but still runs as sweet as anything. Ford really had a winner with that 1.8 engine. Lovely cars.     @@happydavid13 an on 125,000 so still a way to go, bought as a workhorse as my other car guzzles fuel. I really like the engine but unfortunately it's bolted to a Ford.

    I believe it is 8mm. But that nylon fuel pipe is really cheap, and you can buy it by the metre on Amazon/EBay. It’s a good idea to have a few bits of it in stock as it’s useful for all sorts of jobs. Good luck!

    When I used the bulb pump and left it connected permanently I tapped into the line that comes FROM the tank and goes into the filter. If you read the comments you will see that I later revised this arrangement. I didn’t leave the fuel bulb pump connected permanently. I used it to quickly draw fuel through the filter and then quickly connected the pipe that runs to the high pressure pump before immediately starting the car. It helps if you can use a syringe or little funnel to fill the pipe that runs to the high pressure pump with diesel to get as little air in the system as possible. Good luck!

    I’m in the dreaded situation now, 5hrs and no joy, I’ve tried both an electric and hand pump on the outlet of the filter, the fuel just flows back to the tank as soon as I stop pumping, what am I doing wrong ?

    Hello Nick. I feel for you because I know that it’s a nightmare when they won’t start. You’ve got to make sure that the pipe that runs to the high-pressure fuel pump is full of fuel and I do this using a syringe or a little funnel. As for fuel flowing straight back to the tank I know what you mean. If you can get the pipe full of fuel that goes to the high pressure pump, then suck fuel through the filter and then connect everything up quickly, once the engine fires and you rev up it should keep going. But I really do know how you must feel having to deal with it. Why make it so difficult for such a simple job? On one occasion before I got the priming bulb I had to get the engine running using easy start (ether) which gave it chance to pull fuel into the pump and start running on diesel. One more thing. Make sure you’ve got the filter together properly. I once spent ages trying to suck fuel through only to find it was pulling in air around the filter housing. They’re great when they run. An utter pig to bleed off. Good luck and stay patient my friend.

    @@happydavid13 thank you very much for the info, I’ve now ordered a Mann filter as the Bosch one didn’t come with the little O ring, also I’ve read lots of conflicting information regarding the flat rubber seal, I’m sure originally mine was on top of the filter, but apparently it should be on the bottom ?

    @@happydavid13 all sorted, I brought a Mann filter as they come with the small 19mm O ring which the Bosch one I originally brought doesn’t, also a fuel bleeder with the matching female and male ends to fit inline to the filter, also used a jump pack to help turn the engine over faster, started on the 2nd attempt. Thanks for the help.

Would you mind telling me the name and stockist of the fuel bleeder you used please? I think some people put a non return valve in the pipe that feeds into the inlet side of the filter to prevent fuel running back to the tank each time you stop sucking on the pipe. I’m sure you know the phenomenon I’m describing! Nightmare. Utter nightmare. Why make a simple job take days? Played Ford, played! Take care.

    Sam Tait if you don’t get the filter assembly back together correctly they do noting but suck in air. Absolute nightmare. I’d leave it and try again when feeling less frustrated. Excellent engine apart from this bleed off problem after a filter change.

    On fiat and iveco you just ignition on for 15 seconds and then ignition off and repeat for 3 or so times and that’s how you prime it

    This is a Ford Focus car I’m talking about. I guess Iveco and Fiat are trucks (lorries) and perhaps have an electric fuel pump. The Focus certainly does not

    Yes I would like to see what you have invented. ...I have had mine 6 months and have a cpl of things go wrong. Diesel injector gone and maf sensor thanks for getting back to me .leaving my car like this with the pump how long will it last ..I have the metal end pieces so the pump seems like better quality. .

    turbo it depends on the quality of the pump. Mine was Silverline and seemed to leak air. Ok for priming but not good to leave it permanently connected

    turbo thank you Sir. The next time I change my filter I going to fit a non return valve into the fuel line. If seen others do this and it prevents fuel draining all the way back to the tank once you disconnect the filter housing and let air in. So when you prime it, you are only having to draw the fuel a short distance and it’s not constantly trying to drag air in (if that makes any sense!). I can post a link to the valve I’m going to use if it’s any good to you. David (UK)

    Frank Jiggens I’m glad it worked for you Sir! I’m still running my focus. Nearly 300k on the clock. They are a super tough car but priming them after a filter change is a right sod! As I mentioned in the comments, I don’t have the rubber bulb permanently in the system now as it was drawing in air (poor quality bulb) but I use it manually to prime the system through the filter and quickly attach the pipe that goes to the hp pump. Helps if you have a syringe to fill that pipe ( the one that goes to the hp fuel pump) with diesel too. On start up, when she fires, keep her revving to avoid any little pockets of air in the pipe stalling the engine. Good luck Sir!

    This saved me so much i have non start issue and this helped it seems to be that fuel pump is weak, air getting in not sure but sometimes car started after 30 min of cranking (Not healthy i know) but after this, everyday i just need to pump it up till its hard then starts like new all day

    I don’t know if this is good or not but someone told me to squirt a bit of easy start up the air filter and that’s enough while you’re turning over to get the vehicle started

    Can take a whole can to get it going after a pump change often easier on the car to tow it for a couple of miles and it starts

    Endless issues with this and here is what i done. Got a jerry can with diesel and a giant syringe, filled the syringe up with diesel and took the inlet pipe off to the filter, opened the bleed screw on top of the filter and connected a small pipe onto that that went into a jar of diesel. Then it put fuel into the filter via the inlet pipe using the syringe while watching in the jar the bubbles from the bleeder nipple pipe until they stopped. Then had someone crank it over while i still had the syringe attached slowly putting fuel it and after 5-10secs of cranking the engine fired up so i quickly removed the syringe and attached the inlet fuel pipe back onto the filter, then done up the bleed nipple. Job done, at last. :D

    This was on a c-max, same engine, also in other fords like mondeo ete. And yes they are known for been a bastard to start after getting air in system. My dad whos ex mechanic said they used to use a special vacuum/sucker tool that connected to an air compressor to draw the fuel through and the air out. Cheers for the vid anyway, helped us out. I had the pump you put inline and that as going to be the next step.

    Just a little update. I have recently removed the priming bulb as it started letting air into the system. Now I temporarily use the rubber primer on the outlet side of the filter to draw clean bubble free fuel into a jug. I also use a syringe to fill the pipe that goes to the fuel pump with diesel. Quickly pull off the priming bulb from the filter and push the fuel pump pipe back on. Quickly crank the engine and when it fires keep it revving a while to pull any air through without the engine stopping. I always carry the priming bulb with me just in case. I also carry a spare filter.

    Another easy way to get your car running after a fuel filter change is towing. But has to remember the fuelfilter must be full.

    Is there no danger that the timing belt might jump a tooth? as I have seen on other motors of a similar ilk, then it wont start.

    Handbrake binding, Rear shoes binding, Front brake disc binding, air filter clogged is usual suspects or faulty injectors.

    sounds okay to me.. if i get round to it [might be nevEr] then i'd convert my low-level.. i woz brought up on high level cisterns and the low-level silent types give me the willies

    Not much sound from the cistern heard with this one. I would have expected to hear it filling again. I like to hear a good powerful refill. Nice video though. I also like to see older british toilets in their original setting if possible. Some channels have managed this, but not enough!

    To be honest, if you compare the diameter of 32mm pipe with the flush pipe that is normally used to couple a low level suite there is practically no difference. It's difficult to find any other type of pipe that will fit into the bottom of the syphon and make a watertight seal using a compression nut and rubber seal.
