  My theory is that it play tested poorly and functioned too similar to blighttown. Between all the games, even with performance fixed, Blightown is still the only one I actively avoid doing as much as possible. DS 1 was still in that era of getting the “feeling” right through gameplay rather than putting satisfying gameplay first like they do today. Even compared to Dark Souls 2, the moment to moment gameplay between the “swamps” is very different, with 2 being more focused on combat. If the layout didn’t change at all you’d essentially be forcing the player to wade through a slog of a level constantly poisoned, basically all of the runback to Quelana but for more of the level. And I don’t think it’s a leap to say that they were considering making it “toxin” as well given future patterns that follow this trend. They probably changed it to the lava mechanic because they already had that lying around right outside and it fit the same design theory without too much fuss getting it right thematically. Players had already been conditioned to just run through lava and not sit in it fighting, so it would at least function mechanically to get you through it rather than turning into another slog. It’s a fun little pocket of History to see with the “end product” being Elden Ring. In a way, one could argue that the Haelig Tree is the current final rendition of BlightTown, and the rot swamp underground close to what they imagined for Lost Izalith.

  Surprising that Miyazaki let a swamp level get cut. But i guess it makes sense since this was before he became president of From so someone could still tell him to chill with his swanp fetish😂. Now that he's the president, all limiters are off hence why we have a minimum of 3 swamp areas in every souls game.

  so my question is how is the swamp rationalized as sitting under ceaseless whos spewing lava. even if it wasnt directly where he was walking, it still has spots under the arena.... so was lava in the swamp too? was ceaseless' arena for something else originally? was it in a different spot? it doesnt make much sense to me for him to be a "thrown together" boss they thought up last second and added somewhere once they decided on magma. but lava waterfalls falling into a swamp would just make rocks, and wouldnt make a ton of visual sense to have lava falls pouring onto a rock that stays the same size. this isnt ment to argue, we know it was a swamp at one point. just trying to rationalize a mid development product with its release state. maybe the izalith swamp was further up and ceaseless was inside the dome at one point, idk. makes more sense than him standing in a swamp or lava dripping into a swamp without the whole ground just becoming pumice.

  maybe lava wouldnt be there cuz based on current lay out you'd have to kill ceaseless before hitting the 2nd swamp unless maybe daughter of chaos shortcut.... it would be an odd enough thing to see i cant even eliminate it as one of the potential reasons the zone changed.

  Did you know that Rykard has a special animation if he kills you in a grab? He throws your body around then swallows you… Also did you know in the original Dark Souls how bad curse was? Curse used to be able to stack 8 times

  A lot of grab attack has unique animation if it kill you. From those I know, there's the giant octopus that swallow you if the grab kill, and the iron maidens that doesn't spit you out if the grab kill.

  I don’t think Deathblight is unbalanced so long as it doesn’t do damage on top of the build up, and said build up isn’t influenced by Arcane. Boluses exist and it’s probably the only status effect worth pre emptively using a Bolus for.

  They should have made it that if you become the chosen vessel of the 2 fingers as the next lord of chaos you cannot die from madness infliction, instead it should leave you on 1 hp and ay the usual stun effect. It would still kill you in PvE and PvP if something hits you while you're stunned and it will add a nice secret detail tot he lore.
