It’ll also be really interesting to see if 23-24 Merlin has some promising guys with only one or two RC cards. That seems to be where the real long-term value would be.

Awesome analysis of the new RC class. One small note: Buonanotte actually had a “First Bowman” in the 22-23 Topps Argentina Fileteado set. Long term, I wonder if the market will treat these Bowman First cards as the “real” RC card. I have no idea… But the one advantage would be the player would only be in one set for the true RC. There must be other examples of this too.

thanks for the informative video as usual...I think this year rookie class compared to last year is kinda meh apart from Yamal...I'm still a bit skeptical given Fati example just a couple years ago, so have to wait and see. last year was quite solid with Mainoo breaking out of nowhere to the scene..Bardghji, Soule, Garnacho, Alvarez, Enzo...to name some.

Hi James, it seems that there is quite a bit of fomo and overall excitement in the soccer market right now surrounding Yamal and a few others. Would be interested in your thoughts if you have the time and interest to do another video.

Great video although I have to say that while I agree mundicromo is a bit less premium then MK the insert game for mundicromo from day1 for Messi for way stronger then MK insert game, at least until MK upped its game from 2019/10. Just look at how many quality foil inserts Messi had in Mundicromo from 2005 onward... I think it deserves attention and a video :)

repacks reminds me of what Fortnite, Roblox, nba2k have already introduced through loot boxes. Kids have been fed the gambling addiction from an early age through video games. It continues with sports gambling and now these re-packs.

I really appreciate this video. Given the unregulated nature of "the hobby", the unfortunate reality is questions regarding potential shady behavior/practices have to be raised almost entirely by the average hobbyist. Most collectibles companies aren't going to speak up or do anything about it since it would potentially affect their bottom line. The move to turning the hobby into a casino was pretty apparent when Fanatics got involved. I feel a lot of collectors nowadays are getting blindsided by all these record sales, bit hits, etc.. and we desperately need opposing voices to balance things out with reason instead of hype.

The one thing I will say in regards to why spending money on a repack over betting on the game is if you lose your bet on the game you get nothing in return...a repack you will get a card back at least. Also have to buy from people making good repack products and not filling them with a bunch of floor cards and 1 chaser

I understand your sentiment but this is a good thing imo. People buy in to these and get something out of it, not gambling, but gambling-ish. As others have said, buying in to breaks or ripping wax has less roi than these mystery packs. I think alot of people love the idea of hitting a momster card or landing the best team in a break for a good price, knowing they most likely will hit a floor pack/team and still have a chance of hitting something cool. Gambling-ish but something in return for money. Also, kids don't have credit cards, needed for whatnott and I assume Fanatics live

Great video. Now run the #s on retail and hobby wax boxes. Much worse ROI than repacks. People buy repacks because they are tired of losing 80-90% on buying wax. I am certainly not defending repacks. Most of us know buying singles is the best course of action, but it bothers me that someone at some point was ripped off buying a box to get these singles into the marketplace.

  • @blueodum
    @blueodum2 ай бұрын

If people stop buying wax boxes because they are not worth it, the margins on those boxes will come down and repacks won't make sense any more.

  • @TamTranTriZzle

Couple immediate thoughts: 1) EVERYTHING is a repack. Hobby boxes, Retail Boxes, Packs, Boosters ie., every sealed product is a repack. People are not paying $1000 for a Pirizm hobby box for hundreds of base cards. No, they want that Octopus Neophyte Turtleskin Wemby parallel purple numbered to 3. And I am sure people are not cleaning the shelves full of Blasters in hopes of getting a Mem card. A repack is no different than any sealed product, which is as old as the hobby itself. 2) The time, effort, and hassle of doing repacks is not worth it to the average person. Anyone who has ever sold anything of quantity on ebay or amazon will tell you, it is a pain. For every 10 sales, you are gonna have 1 return, 1 person trying to scam, 1 person whose package is damges, 1 person whose package got lost in the mail, and 2 unhappy peoiple who said you ripped them off and will constantly haggle you. Not to mention the enormous time it takes to pack, and ship. Not even including the enormous time of getting/buying shopping for the cards. Try doing 100 repacks and shipping off 100 packages. The avg person will kill themselevs. If you truly account for the hours you put in, from buying, to creating the packs, to advertsing them, to selling them, then collectig payment, packing, shipping, and then the "customer service" AFTER you send off the packs, in the end, it is not worth it to most people. It is only viable for people who already have the systems, and resources in place- who already have a business that ships out tons of cards every day (ie cardcollector2 as you say), and hence doing a repack is just adding another item to that business. But the averageJoe schmo? Nope, a disaster awaits. 3) The majority of people buying repacks are collectors, hobby enthusiasts, or people who just love cards in general. It is rare to have an investor who knows nothing come and buy a repack to make money. Repacks are to collectors just like scratch off tickets are to casino gamblers. It is a side thing that is throwaway fun to that person in each space. You don't really expect to win anything big, but it's fun, and you enjoy the experience because you are already a part of that hobby. 3) From a birdseye view, to make a 30% profit sounds good, but zoom in, and I can think of a million other ways to make 30% that does not take NEARLY a fraction of the enormous time and effort of repacks, with alot less stress nd residual headaches. If I had $50K to spend to make a modest return and I had to do it with cards, I sure as heck will not be buying a hundred cards and doing repacks. The logistics is insane to pull it off effectively and efficiently. I would buy a FEW cards, or even 1 card, and flip it quickly for profit.

If you assume 75% of the people are weekly repack/breaks customers, they have a $25k/ year gambling habit...couple that with the modern market declines... And/or inaccurate comps, selling fees (unless you can sell everything with 0 fees). It must be really fun.

I don't buy into them but, from the risk/reward perspective - I'd estimate that pretty much any repack done by one of the larger, well known repackers who know the markets are likely giving buyers WAY better returns than nearly every hobby product released from the major manufacturers. You're far more likely to lose 80%+ of your cost on a sealed hobby box vs. maybe losing 20-40%, at most, on a repack - and actually have a very reasonable chance to break even or better. They are merely taking advantage of the companies printing into oblivion.

To answer your question of why these people gamble on repacks, it’s because the hosts of these repack games tend to (intentionally) have cards of young players with potential upside and the mind of an addict associates that with higher reward for their bets. All the while 90% of these players will not become superstars in their sport

I’ve been buying cards to make repacks, so this is perfect haha. Never thought about the “morality” of it .. and I don’t care .. I tell you what Is and isn’t so you know what’s at stake. It’s no different than the buyer opening panini instead. Also there’s really not that many content creators making videos tailored to children. The content is just family friendly because why would it be any other way. I do also think it’s bad for kids to gamble (duh) but, that’s on the parents at the end of the day. There are RPs costing $500-200 and $50-15, if a child is spending hundreds on a RP the world has bigger issues. We may disagree here and there but we can agree this was a good informative video 👍🏽

I have been kicking the repack idea around for a couple if years now. I want it to be something my customers are going to love and not hate. I have an idea how I would do it. its too truthful and I dont think people would buy in. I would definitely have a checklist. Maybe even item the packs. I have the same feeling around breaking. I am approved to break on all the platforms you would to be approved. I just feel like its getting in bed with scum bags

Great points. I'll also say CC2's content showing him going to card shows and spending 20k-30k on cards without any explanation of how they will sell a lot of that stuff gives his audience(mostly young teens) a bad example or idea of how to go about the "hobby". Also what they don't understand is he and others have made several videos spending large sums of money and come to find out Whatnot gave them the money to spend to promote the app. Most big influencers like him also get cuts and deals on the selling fees that someone like myself won't get. The influencers can do whatever they want, I just think they need to disclose in their videos or IG posts this information. Also with the Whatnot repacks, the auction aspect really plays into people's FOMO(fear of missing out),they feel like they have to get in NOW at whatever cost. The only repacks I've bought are the Hit Parade products on DACardWorld or the Gold Rush on SteelCity, the difference with these is while being limited to say 100 boxes, it's buy it now and usually you'll have a couple of days to a couple of weeks to think about the purchase before making it before it sells out,and they don't put $50 floors on a $475 box either.
