האקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים נוסדה לפי חוק בשנת 1961. חברים בה בשנת תשפ"ג 143 מדענים ומלומדים ישראלים מן המעלה הראשונה.
לפי חוק האקדמיה מטרות האקדמיה ותפקידיה העיקריים הם: לרכז בתוכה מטובי אישי המדע תושבי ישראל, לייעץ לממשלה בענייני מחקר ותכנון מדעי בעלי חשיבות לאומית, לטפח ולקדם פעילות מדעית, לקיים מגע עם גופים מקבילים בחוץ-לארץ, לייצג את המדע הישראלי במוסדות ובכינוסים בין-לאומיים, לפרסם כתבים שיש בהם כדי לקדם את המדע.

What’s so interesting is this insistence by certain “scholars” that everything in the Quran MUST have a rabbinic Jewish or Syriac Christian source. Even when these motifs could be better explained by recourse to the indigenous Arab culture of the time. As mark durie has shown, both the concept of shirk (generally sharing, usually meaning sharing in a business/transactional sense ie sharing ownership of land, or a herd etc) and wilaya (patron/protector) existed in pre Islamic Arabia. Why would we have to assume that these concepts were not derived from the local culture and applied to the realm of theology and human-divine relations, and were instead drawn from obscure Palestinian Aramaic poetry or whatever like this guy is claiming? It’s such a stretch. Interestingly, as toshiko izutsu has shown, in the Quranic worldview, shirk has a source, it arises from “zann” or conjecture, which is exactly what seems to be going on here!

@19:00 my reasoning: flipping all 4 cards can strengthen or weaken the universality of the rule. If we find a "3" behind "F" then it will challenge the rule. Finding something other than a "D" behind "3" will also challenge the rule. Thus flipping all cards can either give credence to the rule or remove support for the rule.
The rule ONLY says what it says : 3 always with D. 3 behind F is TOTALLY irrelevant.

Darwin was definitely non rational he was not a philosopher, a theologian a psychologist or anything other than a biologist. The elements creating consciousness, and mind would be truly non rational. Consciousness and mind which supposedly did not exist yet being created by elements would be truly miraculous.

Pinker never fails to deliver fascinating lectures. The stark distinction between "real" beliefs and "mythological" beliefs is very intriguing. Beliefs in the Reality Zone are more immediate and practical, whereas beliefs in the Mythology Zone are more abstract and remote. However, the claim that mythological beliefs "don't impinge on [people's] day-to-day lives" (00:37:45) is highly questionable. For example, a family may care deeply about their children's schooling because they believe that the children are made in the image of God and thus ought to actualize their full potential through education. Regardless of its utility and potential veracity, the "mythological" belief in God informs the family's daily commitment to ensuring that the child has food on the table and enough clothing to attend school. In this case, the daily practice of ascertaining "real" beliefs arises from a prior commitment to a "mythological" belief. Pinker is right in differentiating the cognitive investments that go into each, but their relationship is much more intimate than he seemed to suggest.

Fascinating lecture. Two things though. There was a significant Muslim community in the Arakanese kingdom of Mrauk-U down to the present day which is why we have the Rohingya issue in Burma. In Siam, a Buddhizized Muslim noble family would later play a large role in Siamese politics in the 19th century (Bunang family).

Also, if Professor Pinker really wants to make an actual contribution to the entire "fake news/misinfo/disinfo" discourse, he should investigate thoroughly and objectively the entire topic of supposed "Trump outrages" as they were misrepresented in MSM during his first Administration. Spoiler: literally *nothing* that they said Trump said he _actually_ said.

Congratulations to Prof Paul Mendes-Flohr for his Closing Lecture on Buber's Legacy Today, held on 24/01/2023 at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. I first met Prof Paul Mendes-Flohr in Jerusalem in 1989, when I visited him at the HUJ after attending the Martin Buber Symposium at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. I really enjoyed his lecture when I watched it today on KZread.
It was great to attend this lecture by Prof Guy Stroumsa on "Buber, Levinas, and the Idea of Hebrew Humanism". I was struck by what follows: "Millennial Judaism stands for life as the spirit of the text, although it is only through the letter that the spirit can be discovered. In this sense, Israel is equivalent to the human race and all adults, i.e. people driven by ethical concerns, can now be called Jews. I quote: any man who is truly human probably belongs to the offspring of Abraham against the second century saying of the Christian Church Father Tertullian "Anima Naturaliter Christiana" (The human soul is naturally Christian). Levinas could almost propose his own "Anima Judaica": recovering Judaism is the same as recovering Humanity. After the war, Levinas learnt to read the ancient Jewish texts in a new way, speaking to the concerns of modern man. He was thus freed from the Christian temptation of his youth, and found his own voice when he himself taught these texts side by side with his philosophical work through his lively teaching, contributing for a whole generation in a masterly way to the intellectual development and intellectual revelation of the French Jewish community." Congratulations to Prof Guy Stroumsa.

הספר הנזכר בהרצאה חשוב מאוד כשער לנושא ביות הצמחים בידי האדם, וקשה להמעיט בחשיבותו. קראתי אותו מרותק מכריכה לכריכה, והוא מומלץ בחום רב לכל מי שמבקש להרחיב אופקיו בכיוון זה. עם זאת, בתחילת הספר, כמו גם בתחילת הרצאתו זו של גופר משולבת ״דרשה״ מלנכולית, שאני מתקשה לקבלה. הרי כמה השגות לגביה: (1) ניצול המתכות אינו עשוי להיקרא ״ביות״ אלא בדרשה מופרזת, שכן אינו כרוך בברירה או בשינוי של המתכות. I feel sad to see Prof. Moshe this weak. I enjoyed his talks as he was polite and considerate when talking about the prophet Mohammad (PBUH). As a muslim, I don't want you to convert to Islam, but I expect you to be as polite as him. This pertains to all bad-mouthed and knuckleheads out there.
