Chaosium

Chaosium

The Chaosium exists deep underneath the bottom of the lowest Underworld. It is the Fount of Chaos and spews forth our collective unconscious - fantasies and monstrosities alike - into our world. Artists, lunatics, and gamers are all inspired by its restless dreams. The Chaosium speaks to us:

“We are all Us.”

“You must cut the Dragon Head off yourself, take it with your left hand and make it part of you. You must slay the dragon and wield its power.”

“Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!”

The Chaosium lets us dream the dreams of dead gods and construct the universe out of its essential runes. It lets us travel along the Lightbringers Quest to revive the murdered sun or walk the non-Euclidean pathways of R’lyeh’s nightmare corpse-city.

In this mundane and grey world, the Chaosium brings your untamed imagination to life, through role-playing games, books, board and card games, comics, and more.

I have had a on going discussion on the chaosium forums, which i feel is unfrotunately echoing the sentiments here, to a drawback of the product. i have uttered by blasphemy saying that i want a 'cr-like' stat. members of the chaosium community have raked me over the coals because of the sentiments regarding balance. however, thats not my issue with an omission of a 'cr-like' stat. my problem with not having a 'cr-like' stat is that it takes immensely longer to compare stats. one might ask why i would be comparing stats, of course. they might insist that you can only be asking about that if you have some notion of balance in mind. i very adamantly reject this notion. i want to plan for my sessions. i compare stats and so does everybody else. i see the comparison of stats as an inevitability. i also see stat comparisons as 'square one' for session planning. that all being said, it is incredibly frustrating to read through an entire stat block and compare stats in a line by line fashion because of how long it takes to comparing stats from a system that has a 'cr-like' stat. i know that the designers of this system have less resources and i wonder, was any consideration made towards the GM and how much time they spend getting ready to play, but not actually playing? it seems like a major oversight of the system, which creates a barrier to entry and lessens ease of access. overall, i love the BRP rule set, but i cant help but feel like my time is being inappropriately wasted due to a strange design limitation regarding thoughts of balance. thoughts? i also wondered about non human races that are playable by the players. again, the community really wants to rake me over the coals in regards to thoughts on balance. however, again, this is not truly the krux of the issue. you might say its semantics, but i firmly believe that playable races should be FAIR. another word that could be used is equal. i know these words are balance adjacent, but thats really not my problem. the problem with having one race that is not on par with another race, is that all of the min/ maxers pick that race. i cant help but feel like i am arguing with some diehard fans of the system that refuse to see things another way. not only are alternative races fun to play, there should be a way to make them fair in term of ability to anybody not picking those races. thoughts?

these are great for learning, but umm.. in the 1920's people didn't use 2024 dumb pronouns.. it was he or him, she or her, that's it. anything else in the 1920s would put you in a mental asylum

Goal before Roll has been my mantra in every game I've played or reffed since about 1985. I've pissed off SO many players over the years who've said something like "I want to make a Perception Roll to see if I can..." and I stop them in their tracks. "You tell me what the character is trying to do, and I'll tell you what happens, or what you need to roll..." I HATE "in-character" discussions that go, "Who's got the highest Strength?" "Err... I've got 16.." "I've only got 15..." etc etc... If there's one thing in RPGs that even experienced players do that boils my piss... its that sort of conversation in a game. My players have stopped using it as a way to wind me up as well... Every now and then on an initiative turn one of them would say, "I want to roll for stealth" to try and get a rise out of me, so now when it gets to their turn I'll say "OK, Mike... Jack the PI is, for some reason, sitting down and rolling some dice... nothing happens as a result.... Dave... your Doctor's go, you are shooting the cultist, right? Go for it! If a player has a decent skill level or plenty of proven expertise in something, and the player describes it well, I won't even make them roll for half the things they want to. This can, however, annoy certain players in BRP/CoC/RQ type games where a tick for a successful roll can mean a chance to improve.

Beautiful and informative. I'd even consider gifting it to a teen as the illustrations are pretty enough to keep their eyes on. Outright kills the appeal of an unknowable Gloranthan myth, though. The all-knowing objective voice is Godlearnerist as heck and some rules lawyer would ignore YGWV and probably cite this to stop their DM from crafting something interesting like Elmali reactionary actions against Sun Domers

regarding slogans you might find on a British ceramic mug, there a range of variations on a national one (I imagine dating from the World War, though whether the first or second I'm not sure) 'Keep calm and carry on!' - so a common version on a tea mug would be 'Keep calm and drink tea'. But we love our tea and coffee mugs, so there's a huge range of motifs, designs, characters, styles and so on. Tea cups are very different to mugs; they are smaller and have a different shape, and should ideally be accompanied by a saucer (small plate with a raised edge) on which the cup is placed (like its own special coaster). As tea is made with boiling water it's very hot, and to be able to have some without waiting for it to cool down, a small amount of tea would be poured onto the saucer and drunk from that, although this is a practice I've not seen in probably 30 years.

The covid specific slogan was 'Stay Home. Protect the NHS. Save Lives.' That was very much the Government line, however, so a Rivers of London character who isn't Lady Tyburn is more likely to have some sort of parody slogan, possibly referencing Barnard Castle, eye tests, PPE contracts and parties at Number 10.

Every time I see pronouns, I instantly am out. Stop forcing your self identity onto natural truth. You want to pretend, if the actor and costume are sufficient, I'm not gonna go checking your lies, but if you want a 5 o'clock shadow with a wig or lady bulge, grow up.

Hazel was a bit off, I think. I'm thinking, hey these people are trying to raise money for an orphanage and all he did was use the language of the time re: morality. If I went back in time and someone told me they were trying to keep young women from a life of immoral turpitude, I'd interpret that to be no different than today's "keep kids off the street." All those women the Ripper killed weren't selling their bodies for fun. It was extreme poverty and lack of social support. And, yes, I am fully aware that these institutions were also rife with abuses.

Slow burn, with the intensity rising on this one. We received a good bit of lore and back story from the other side of the tracks. I think the cast got a bit too personal, mentioning unmentionables for polite New Engand society in the 20's. "Why does it matter to you?" was a good rejoinder by Pipa. That said, well done on the role play.
