    Congratulations to you for finding and maintaining a copy of this rare lost gem! I'm delighted to finally be able to see it! (And it's WAY better than most of the re-makes -- especially "Here's Love!"). Thanks for posting it so everyone can enjoy it at last!

    Interesting, but it's a poor remake of the original 1947 movie

    I like that, but I don’t like how every remake comes down so strongly on the side of him being definitely the real Santa, I must confess.

    The 1994 "modern" remake SUCKED! Remakes of "classics" usually do.

    Eh. Sometimes, yes, but sometimes you get The Thing. I always say every story deserves to be told as many times as people want to tell it. (And if the remake is really bad, we just forget about it!)

    I'm not so sure about Ed Wynn's performance; he sounds less like Santa and more like a cartoony-voiced character like the Cowardly Lion.

  • @brianlynch996
    @brianlynch9965 ай бұрын

    It’s easier to adjust to if you’ve seen him in more things, because that is his natural speaking voice, cartoonish though it may be.

    Why was Jesus replaced with Santa. A lie told to children rather than the true story of hope to push consumerism at an impressionable age. Very strange.

    1:28 You mention that 1955's Kris Kringle Thomas Mitchell had played Uncle Billy in "It's A Wonderful Life." I ran across that character name, "Uncle Billy," in an obscure '50s Christmas TV Special, "Joe Santa Claus," as a department store janitor who aspired to be the store Santa, only to be passed over for the role by the titular "Joe." Surely an homage of one kind or another. =^[.]^=

    He was also one of the actors to play Columbo before Peter Falk. Which isn’t christmas trivia, but it is fun to know.

    Cute, that was very cute. The, what we would today call "informercials" chopped the script up, but today we also have fast forward! I enjoyed this version very much. I'm glad the writers kept the USPS mail to Santa in the storyline. Susan was perfect and of course, Ed Wynn and Orson Bean are wonderful! Thank you for working through the legalities to post, it is a gem!

    Movie actors often did 'testimonial" TV commercials... remember when Ronald Reagan and John Wayne pushed cigarettes on TV before "The Duke" later had a lung removed, then died?

  • @igorschmidlapp6987
    @igorschmidlapp69875 ай бұрын

    Yeah, it seemed chopped up and rushed, losing most of the charm of the original film, but that was the problem of trying to tell a 100 minute story in a 50 minute time slot. They rushed the drunken Santa scene, the Fred/Doris relationship, dropped the retirement home (and doctor), Alfred (the Macy's custodian), Susan's real wish, the political story of the judge, the DA's little boy, and Kris reading the letter. It seemed that they wanted to just hit the "highlights" and most famous lines for time. The 1955 TV version with Thomas Mitchell lacked charm, too. Oh, well, it was good to get the chance to watch it, so thanks to Mr. Lynch for "saving" it for viewers...

    His politics got real bad as he got old. And not just “I disagree” bad. He was at least somewhat conservative as far back as the 60s, but late in life he took a hard turn and got openly racist, homophobic, etc. He even wrote for Breitbart. But it happens to a lot of people, and I don’t think we should let that color the many wonderful performances he gave, even if I can’t help but make a little joke about it in my intro.

    I wanted to comment on your Muppet Family Christmas video but couldn’t, but I wanted to let you know that you have the 1988 broadcast of the 1987 special. How I know is when they did the 3 commercials prior to the special returning when the snowstorm continues, my version (KATU Portland, OR) mentioned the Portland Trail Blazers beating the Miami Heat earlier in the day and looking up the game, it took place on December 2, 1988.
