Nice fish. You're right about the size. Perfect for eating. We get lots of the hatchery springs up our way. Greetings from Thirsty Bob!
@@cahilldrummer hey Bob! Thanks for note. Also I really enjoy your IG account. Keep up the good work there!
@@BCFishingJournal Hahaha!! Thanks. Bob is my alter ego. I'm actually a Jesse too.
@@cahilldrummer even better
very nice, I do that kind of fishing often too, most of my kayak but the pier at night is great!
@@rafaelmacedo6679 it’s a total blast fishing for these guys off a pier! Especially on those calm summer evenings.
@@BCFishingJournal cool man, I might go there tonight! give it a try!
Awesome video and great catch man! Looked absolutely delicious!🤤🤤 might be something to try cooking on the beach! 🤔😉
@@kckayakfishing beach salmon catch & cook would be epic. This dry rub recipe is so basic that it would be perfect for a beach cook!
Hey Jesse! We're coming to the Nanaimo to visit dinner friends! Any good spots to shore fish around Parksville??
@@alexwong2735 Hey Alex. Im not the greatest resource for shore fishing in that area. The closest shore location I’ve fished is Madrona Point.
Nice video, but that rod reel setup feels so awkward and out if place in a kayak, curious why not a spinning setup ?
@@saedmalkawi6865 great question! A baitcaster is likely the easiest reel for trolling in this scenario, BUT I simply love using my mooching reel. I do use a spinning setup as well, but that’s only for jigging/bottom fishing. All that said, I am looking at some better rod options to pair with my mooching reel, eg longer butt end & shorter rod length to make it less awkward.
Enjoyed the video! 👍
@@jorix really appreciate your feedback on the video, Cheers!
Yes, we’re launching at Ken Ford Park. Going to try jigging and a little bit of trolling. Might even drop down my underwater camera.
@@HobieOceankayak Very cool! I hope to see that footage. One of these days I’ve got to get up there with my yak.
Well done Jesse. I always enjoy watching your videos. Got a love Vancouver Island heading out on the kayaks tonight.
@@HobieOceankayak Awesome, you fishing out front of CR?
good vid Jesse!

heck yeah, nice catch Jesse!
Cheers! Beauty morning on the water.
Awesome catch n cook 😊
Thanks for watching and appreciate the feedback.
Where were fishing?
Every one of your videos is a pleasure to watch! Great content for us fellow kayak fisherman looking for inspiration! I really enjoyed the additional cooking component in addition to the great catching!!
@@owenpowell2906 thanks so much for leaving that comment, I really appreciate that feedback! I too love the catch & cooks.
Dont want to be a dick but you have to improve your landing game when it comes to salmon. That first fish has almost no shot at surviving with the way you brought it into your kayak.
@@Team-Zissou I can appreciate that note and concern for the salmon, but in this case the salmon took the jig pretty deep so I can to boat him to get it out.
you shouldn't boat or even touch the undersized salmon. wet release for maximum survivability.
@@thecount1001 I appreciate your concern for the salmon as I do as well. I had to boat this guy in order to get the hook out. In this case he took it pretty deep.
The coast guard will be out searching for his dead body when a storm comes up.
Awesome video what pound test do you use when catching these salmon in the ocean
Thanks for the feedback! I have 40# braid as my mainline which is important for fishing deeper and no stretch in the line for hooksets. From the mainline I have a duolock (swivel) that connects a 20#-30# fluorocarbon leader (roughly 4 feet long).
So quick Q. You showed little bit of red hot doble stuff at the end . How much do you put in ?
Hey! Im not 100% clear on the question. Are you asking about how much of the red 3-2-1 mix to apply? In this video I don’t strictly use the Red Hot Double from procure. If my assumption is right, I don’t have a set amount as skeins are different in size. I like a light dusting of the eggs both sides, then I cut into chunks. Then Bag and add a little more powder to shake around. This 3-2-1 cure is a way more forgiving for burning your eggs than straight procure powders where you have to be more careful on the amount.
I use one of those rectangle collapse ones and they actually catch crabs quite well
I bought 2 of them myself. Haven’t taken them out on the yak yet, but plan too. Are you kayak fishing too?
@@BCFishingJournal I was from a cheap inflatable one from cabelas but just got a little 12 footer rigid hull zodiac style boat given to me here
@@BCFishingJournal but do a ton of shore fishing in the rivers and lakes as well. Going today to do some river and lake fishing this afternoon
New to the channel and love it hello from Vancouver Island
Thanks for the note Fred! I’m in Nanaimo area, so most of my videos are central island.
@@BCFishingJournal nice, we just moved from Duncan area to port hardy and LOVING it
@@427max Love Port Hardy. I’ve been up there a few times, all fishing related. Always a fun time and great fishing too.
I missed the 360 camera view ?
Everything was filmed with the 360 camera. The different angles show or camera panning is all on 360 camera. A 360 view in one shot is not in here as its a big weird fishbowl/circular perspective.
Glad you are back for a new season! Love your videos...
Appreciate that Kevin!
Who doesn't like to say "AhaaaaBuuuuuuu?"
Jesus you really couldn’t figure out the drive? Omg😂
Yep, that was my 1st time with a pedal drive yak. We’ve all got to start somewhere, I tend to include those embarrassing things on this channel. That said, I’ve come a long way since then.
I had Scotty send me the proper T-bolts. If you reach out to Scotty they will have you send them a pic and then mail them to you at no charge.
That is great to hear! Would improve the mount significantly.
@@BCFishingJournal Yup. Don't know why they don't include them right off the bat.
Pink Salmon yuk .... We don't even feed that to dogs here. - Kodiak
Freshly caught Pink salmon (not frozen) is great! However, if you don’t like it you MUST TRY making pink salmon burger patties! I made a bunch myself with these fish in this video. Fantastic and probably my favourite way to eat pink salmon now.
I normally troll for salmon, but yeah, I gotta try vertical jigging!
It’s a blast! Feeling the strikes makes it one of my favorite methods.
😂😂 23:19…. Dang mang! At least it wasn’t a rod and reel, hang loose. I’m in a 120 pdl, and I love it!
Yup! Definitely lucky in that way.
I want a 55 IBS trolling motor at the Bow
Yeah I’ve seen a lot of people put docking plates on and adding those. What kind of kayak are you using or looking to add the motor too?
Why don't folks bar fish the fraser for them? People do really well on the Columbia fishing like that
Good question, I have heard of some guys doing this. However that approach is not typical as the Fraser water clarity is pretty poor on the run timing, so challenging for fish to see you bait. Also I’m no Fraser River Sockeye expert but I know these fish are more lockjaw in these upper sections of the river (many miles inland from ocean) where anglers can target them. So it’s a tough fishery in these conditions!
I just got back into fishing this year. This is my home river and I went practically every single day from the beginning of October to end of November. Sadly, after about the second week of October I didn't see a single person catch coho. But it was tons of fun fishing for chum and just playing them. Cant wait until next year!
It’s surprising on the coho with the huge return last year, I heard similar reports. Hopefully this season!
@BCFishingJournal yeah I did hear from a friend that it was amazing the previous there. I think that was partially because of the water depth and it's supposed to be a pretty dry year again this year. You should definitely try this rover again next season!
No raw seafood!!
What?! Raw is dyno-mite!
So good! I’m on Lasqueti and do lots of Kayak/row boat fishing. What boat are you using? Looks like an Old Town maybe?
Nice! Yes, an Old Town Salty 120 kayak. It’s been a blast. I’d love to fish around your area in a yak. The little bit I’ve done via boat was a blast.
@@BCFishingJournal man I need a boat like that! I’ve been using an inflatable. It’s easy getting it in and out of the water the fun stops there 😂caught plenty of fish from it but it’s so much work! I’ve been looking at the Big Water or Wildy Radar 135. Any thoughts on either of those?
@@cahilldrummer personally 12’ is my limit as I’m usually running solo and car topping. The BigWater or any other 13’ or larger are getting more challenging for my transportation needs. Plus the 12’ is perfect for everything I’m doing.
@@BCFishingJournal thanks for the replies! Once I get a boat here it doesn’t need to go on a car ever again. It does however need to get into the water via some pretty nasty beach terrain. I was originally going to buy a Tarpon 140 for simplicity and weight considerations but that hands free fishing looks so rad!!
Thank you for this video. This inspired me to do a video like this of my own.
Thanks for checking out the video and appreciate the feedback!
part 42 im sorry !!
Lol you didnt lock the front bar in. Stupid rock bitter
What time of year is best?
Any time before the commercial season opens up. That may change from year to year and location. The best times are determined by understanding the bigger swing tides and how they fit the area your fishing.
@@BCFishingJournal thank you!! I'm going to try to go out this year!
You're the man who gilled Gus Ling.
Hey! I'm going to be honest, I have no idea what this means. 🤔

Not every sentence/phrase is a question. Stop inflecting your voice like an 11 year old girl.
Great job! Ever think about switching to a casting reel? Much easier on the drop and line counters could be to your advantage. Fish on!
Bro! nice video. I too just got my first Kayak 5 months ago. An Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL. Watching your video, brought back my memory of my first day out. I wasn't planning on catching fish and just wanted to overcome some fears and see how the kayak works. When you were catching the fish, you couldn't believe it, I had the same feeling! Just some helpful advise, if you take the chair off and put it in your car, it will be easier to lift to rooftop. Also leave the PDL drive in the kayak and your gear in the kayak, set the cart wheels in the middle of the kayak to balance the weight on both front and back. You will be able to lift the kayak with 1 finger with all your gear in the kayak. Less things you will have to carry by hand back to the car or truck. These just a few things made my experience more enjoyable. Tight Lines and stay safe! <O)^^><{
Thanks for watching, feedback and advise. Over this past season I’ve learned a lot and dialed in my gear and setup for sure. Looking forward to sharing more on that in the upcoming fishing year. Where are you fishing out of?
The Rock....Movie Location Rambo First Blood
what rods and reels are you using for the kings?
Hey! The gear we use in this video belongs to the fishing guide. From what I recall we used 10’6 Shimano Convergence mooching rods with Amundson mooching reels. TBH I can’t recall the reel model. For my personal gear, I like the Shimano Convergence mooching rod & Islander MR3 mooching reel.
It would be much easier if you invested in a bed extender. Get a 60 inch extender then you don't need to keep lifting it onto the roof. Slide the front of the kayak into the SUV and you may have 3 - 4 feet hanging over the bed extender.
Thanks is for watching and the note. It’s something I am considering!
Big eyed Larry. That’s a good one! Harbour Chandler sell the huge Lighthouse Lures Megabite paddle-tails with huge jig-heads. I catch MASSIVE ling on those. You don’t get a ton of bites on anything so large, but whatever bites is usually big, mean and heavy..!
Yes, I like those Lighthouse lures as well! Pricy but fun to target those larger critters as you say.
I’m surprised more ppl don’t use the Lil’ Nib. It catches Salmon like nobody’s business! My #1 salmon jigging lure.
Great walk through and video as always bro! Couple recommendations: Our Scotty Laketrollers are getting retired this off-season, definitely going to be switching to the Cannons, also after having a solid year with the Navarre aluminum rudder upgrade, we highly recommend it! 👍 Happy Holidays from our fam to yours! We need to make a plan for getting out together in 2024! Cheers!
100% would love to connect in 2024. Also took your advice, I got the aluminum Ridder, just need to install. And I bought the Easi-Troll Cannon downrigger, mounting it with the V-lock system.
And a massive Merry Christmas to you and family!
@BCFishingJournal nice that was our plan as well, are you still thinking behind the seat for the downrigger?
@@kckayakfishing yes, basically copying “Spilt Milt Productions” channel install. The only challenge will be the boom cut/drilling as it’s stainless steel on the Easi-Troll.
@BCFishingJournal yup that was our plan too! Also hoping to attach a drill to the downrigger, would be amazing to not have to worry about cranking up the ball!
Beautiful British Columbia…………That’s an understatement…………
