  On this day in 1972 {February 14th} Mayor Sam Yorty declared it 'Steppenwolf Day' in Los Angeles, and on that same day the group appeared in concert in that city, right after the show they announced their break-up*... At the time the Canadian-American quintet did not have a record on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; just over nine weeks earlier on December 18th, 1971 their "For Ladies Only" was at #66, and that was its last day on the chart. It had peaked at #64 on December 5th, 1971 and spent 7 weeks on the Top 100... And on April 16th, two months after they broke-up, lead singer John Kay debut on the Top 100 with his covered version of Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On", it entered at position #85; four weeks later on May 14th it would peak at #52 {for 2 weeks} and it stayed on the chart for 7 weeks... * Of course the group had a number of reunions, the first just two years later in 1974...
