I have been receiving dialysis treatment since birth due to a chronic kidney condition. In 2003, at the age of 8, I underwent my first kidney transplant from my father. Unfortunately, in 2021, I had to return to dialysis. I am now exploring the possibility of receiving another kidney transplant, this time from a deceased donor. I am seeking information on the potential longevity of a kidney from a deceased donor compared to the 18-year longevity I experienced with my father's kidney.

Thanks! This was helpful. Thank goodness I have a lot of things you mentioned checked off. I got my kidney in early April and I start back to work tomorrow which is causing me some anxiety. But I know everything will happen as it needs to. And yes, there are a lot of unknown things that they never cover in the education class when you start out. Like I had to deal with a case of hydrocele as soon as I got discharged. And that is strictly a guy's thing. Nothing throws you off more than looking down and seeing your scrotum the size of a grapefruit the day you were supposed to be heading home! It has just gotten back to normal size. Then there is the Prograff side effects. I was on such a high dose that I was shaking like Michael J Fox. So they did decrease my dosage and started me on Bella last month. But just last week my BK virus numbers skyrocketed. So now I had to go in for an infusion. So it seems like just when you scale one mountain top you get kicked back down into a valley and have to face another mountain. And I am only three months out from my transplant. But I am still being faithful and meticulous about any symptoms or side effects that I am noticing and being transparent with my transplant team. But I am very thankful not to be dealing with in-center or PD any longer! Grateful for every victory!

Greetings, I watched this video in Jan 2024 when they told me dialysis was my next option. I really liked what you said but they keep pushing me to PD and start in a few weeks at home saying the same thing I’m a great candidate for PD. Well the surgery and training went well but my life went down after that. pD dialysis made me sick every week and kept me in the hospital every 2 weeks.i lost Over 20 pounds of muscle mass, loss my appetite and no one could figure out why on top of end stage kidney failure. When I almost lost my independence and my mind they finally put me on hemo dialysis and I felt so good after dialysis. The way they promised I would feel on PD dialysis after a few months I felt after 1 day on hemo dialysis at the center. I have been on Hemo dialysis for a month and my energy is back, my appetite is back and my life is back. I wish I would have done more research on home hemo dialysis but they did make it like the best option for me. I hope to be trained on home hemo very soon. I am waiting to get my AV graft because my vascular DR said my veins are way too small. I don’t mind being in center but I feel being at home is the answer for me. I am on two transplant lists as welll. I had a pancreas transplant 10 years ago and now I need a kidney transplant. I feel you live and learn but I just wanted to share my experience. I’m not saying PD is a bad choice, it just did not work for me and my body. I wanted it to work and I worked hard to do the training and learn everything as a model student. I did it for 4 months with no infections, just never felt better. My Pd Cather was removed two weeks ago and it hardly looks like anything was there. Thanks

When you do the procedure to get the fistula and if you ever decide in the future to remove it, both ways does have some discomfort everybody’s pain tolerance is different but you will recover as you see in my videos. It took some time, but I was able to recover and bounce back well. Now that I have my arm back in full function, I’m doing much better.

It has been 11 years since my transplant and it has been working fine. The stability of it has been great. For 4 years, I have been living in Japan. I have decided that it is time to close my fistula. It developed an aneurysm 2 years ago. The Japanese doctors thought it may not be a good idea to remove it just in case when I asked last year and advised me to wait, the reason was I have been moving to place to place, so these were new doctors I have been seeing. In a change of heart, they have finally decided that it is a good time to close. Going back in time, my doctor in Hawaii has recommended it and informed me the surgery is simple. I have also learned that there are other ways they can do it. He also informed that the arm will probably not be the same how it was before I had the fistula made. It will look a bit more "normal" as he put it. I am nervous about it since it will be in Japan, not the care but the procedures before through after surgery. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is helping me to look on the bright side.

I have been on dialysis just over a year now, I feel cold during dialysis, blurred vision and dizziness, I feel cold during and after and I am starving! So hungry, drained afterwards and yes with me I feel better the day after to a certain degree, I'm losing so much weight and back to a size 10 which I have not been for over 10 years!

  • @CrissyMac

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I completely understand what you’re going through. Dialysis can be incredibly tough, and it’s not uncommon to feel cold, dizzy, and drained during and after the sessions. It’s great that you feel somewhat better the day after, but the hunger and weight loss must be challenging. I remember those days. I myself lost massive amounts of weight. Remember to talk to your healthcare team about these symptoms…they might have some tips or adjustments that could help you feel more comfortable. You’re not alone in this journey, and your strength is truly inspiring. Stay strong and take care of yourself. Sending you lots of love and positive energy!

Thank you for another great video! I was concerned that the Bela infusion was going away & thankfully, it's not!!!...Maybe you could explain to the staff about why you film some clips; or maybe there is another infusion center you can go to, that will do the Bela infusion. Maybe there's a place even closer to you. I know of a national center, called Paragon, but don't know if they are located anywhere close to you. You could still film on infusion days (in your car) & let us know how things go. Praying it all works itself out!!! 🙏❤️🙏

Thank you for sharing your dad’s story with me. He sounds like an incredibly tough and resilient man, and it must have been so hard to see him in such pain from kidney stones. It’s truly one of the worst pains someone can experience. While I can’t personally relate to kidney stones, I can imagine how frightening it must be to think about going through that. I had a kidney transplant that’s why I went through this. The important thing is to stay proactive about your health-staying hydrated and following any medical advice that can help prevent kidney stones. Remember, it’s okay to feel worried, but know that you’re strong too. You’ve got the support and love of your family, and if anything were to happen, you wouldn’t be facing it alone. Keep taking care of yourself and lean on those around you when you need to. Stay strong and take it one day at a time. Sending you and your dad lots of positive thoughts and well wishes!
