According to a well known expert I know.;....This might help.....It signifies the type of multiple working equipment fitted ....Also fitted to Class 20 and Class 31 Locos. Many other Classes too!!... Classes 24-27, 33 and 73 come immediately to mind. The first 20 class 30/31's were red circle coded and had electro-magnetic controls whereas blue star locos had electro-pneumatic controls (D5518 was converted to blue star at some time in the later 60"s). There were other codes too, such as white triangle or red diamond and first generation DMU's also had their own colours and symbols with blue square being the most common. What this meant is that any combination of these classes with the same code could be joined in multiple and controlled from the leading locomotive.... So there you have it, what a fascinating subject....Cheers. Alan.
