The Fig Tree Guy - Evan Panagiotopoulos
I enjoy telling stories and creating content about cooking, gardening and about the nuances of the Greek language.
I was born and raised in Korinthos, Greece and since 1977, New York State has been my home.
If you love Greek/Mediterranean food and you need some inspiration, you’ve come to the right channel. Here you’ll learn to make authentic Greek/Mediterranean dishes that are simple to make and so gratifying to share!
I post videos about organic gardening, raised bed gardening, Ruth Stout gardening philosophy, recipes and Greek-related content. I love growing figs from cuttings in zone 6a, NY, America. I prescribe to Ruth Stout’s gardening philosophy of “lazy gardening”.

@@user-jr2er4ig9t too many cucumbers, too many.
What type of cucumbers?
@@Amigoreviews the label said “cucumber” but I know it was supposed to be pickling cucumbers.
CUMBERS!!!!!!!!
Black walnut start to loose leaves on Memorial Day. Same time you stop harvesting asparagus and rhubarb.
@@gingercox6468 yes, but I want the season to last much longer!
It all looks so good!
Thanks!
That is a great harvest. We had a lot of our plants die due to heat in eastern NC
Dear @@kathrynequils8753, I am sorry to hear about the losing your plants. Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment. Take care.
They are tiny and cute but they have big appetites. That happened to me! I found a chewed hole but too high up for the babies to exit. I ended up lifting a corner for the babies to escape and they were gone the next day.
@@ElevateTheProcess but did they appreciate it? Nooooooo. The money I’ve spent to keep those rabbits out and away from the garden! Ach!

“I’m going to knock on the door and ask for cuttings.” 🤣🤣 Yesss!
@@ElevateTheProcess well, I got three nice cuttings from a tree two houses further down the street. That was such a beautiful tree.
@@thefigtreeguy I thought that area was prone to freezing temperatures and it’s in ground? Were you able to find out the variety? The figs looked quite large.
@@ElevateTheProcess it’s in zone 9 and the temperature rarely goes to freezing.
@@ElevateTheProcess these trees have been there for many years and the new owners never met the people who planted them. It’s another unknown fig tree. That’s why I tag each of my trees with a metal tag that will last for many years.

@@user-jr2er4ig9t you know I tried to but I needed a ladder. There was a coffee shop next door and I went there, asked if they had I ladder I could borrow and they thought I was a crazy homeless man.
@thefigtreeguy But, were you wearing a Carhart shirt and carrying a tape measure ?
@@user-jr2er4ig9t I wing it with regular clothes and my intuition. No tape measure.
A bunny decided to jump up and make a nest in my raised bed. Chewed through the netting too! Sadly, no more beet leaves.
Really? We have lots if bunnies, woodchucks and other animals but I never had any of them eat any of my veggies. Last year my because I didn’t cover the two grapevines birds ate all the grapes.
Nice snack and dip idea.
Hello @ElevateTheProcess, around the Mediterranean such dishes are very common. Thanks for the comment and for visiting!
Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing!
Yum! You are blessed. Your hard work paid off.
Lots if cucumbers to be pickled!
Did you hire a babysitter for the fig plants and garden? 🤣 Safe travels!

Thanks @user-jr2er4ig9t! It was delicious.
Beautiful garden!
Thank you @pjorge8363. I subscribe to the Ruth Stout philosophy of deep mulching and makes things easier. I have eight beds where I grow onions, garlic, peppers, pickling cucumbers AND lots of figs. It’s my happy place. Seeing the hummingbirds visit so often makes my day brighter. Thanks for visiting!!!
I don't want to add extra alcohol. I want it to ferment with its own alcohol. Is it possible to do it without using any yeast
Hello @katilpatates290, This is a traditional recipe and it needs the extra alcohol.
@@thefigtreeguy thank you sir.

@@thefigtreeguy I paused it
You don't have to bring it inside in the winter???
Correct! Friends gave us a cutting near the end of the summer. The cutting was planted in a small pot with some dirt. We kept it in the house and watered it once a month. In May we planted it outside and had been there three years, uncovered and completely unprotected. We’re in zone 6b in NY.
Looks and main can almost smell it. What dish?
Hi @Tamra-xy2cn, I added dill, parsley, mint, one smallish grated zucchini, two grated tomatoes, salt and pepper too. Yum!
@@thefigtreeguy Mwauh✨
looks great!
Thanks @Winter420!
What size pots do most people have that have to bring their figs in?
Hey @johnmyrick2123, after the cutting roots well, put it in a one gallon pot. Every year I root about 150 cuttings and because I do this indoors and the space is limited I use smaller pots. I hope this helps you.
Evan!!! Calimary !! Time to repot . What size pot ? They are growing vigorously . Yasu .
Just saw this comment. Stupid KZread never notified me. I would use a pot 2 to 3 sizes larger than what you have now.
Awwww beautiful 🤩 😍
Thanks, @ZzSparkzZ! That’s my baby cactus!!!
Nature crazy!
lol @unfortunatelygnarly.
Σας ευχαριστώ, Evan :) One question though, shouldn't "σας" be used instead in "την ευχή σου" if that person is that much older?
Γεια σου @jurchi. Thanks for visiting and commenting. I use “σας” when speaking with an older person and/or a person who deserves respect. For example, if you meet someone who’s older than you address that person using “σας”, καλημέρα σας. I hope this helps you.
Different from others
Thanks @DaveOriginallyfromBrooklyn!
Hello my friend, what do you feed your tree? Best Wishes!
Hey @pjorge8363, nice to hear from you again. If the tree is planted in the ground, just water for the first year. After the first year the roots will be too deep and no watering is needed. For potted trees, you must water often AND you should fertilize with a, 5-5-5 organic fertilizer.
More like 15
Well, that’s what the owner told me. His grandfather planted them a long time ago.
What's even more cool is when you find it growing wild. Where we go horseback riding in the desert there are two established patches. Some how they thrive in the hot dry high desert climate.
Yes, @LisaKnobel! Asparagus loves sandy soil and once the roots are established they can go very, very deep.
Where in Maine is this?? I live in Washington County not to far from Bar Harbor
Hi @michellebolen3892, I’m not familiar with Maine. We’re in Ogunquit. There is an ice cream shop called Scoop Deck and this garden in right there, you can’t miss it.
Don't forget to bring some to your neighbors!😊
Of course!
best food in the world. if you eat asparagus you will not get kidney stones.
I'd abandon it right into some Mason jars 🫙
So that little plant turns into trees if not cut 🤔?
Yes! The first two years you do not harvest any spears and you develop strong roots. You should harvest the spears while they are small, but if you let them develop they will be very thick. You can use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin and you’ll have a tasty vegetable to eat.
Použitie do kytíc.
Watch out for the snakes!
It does look kinda scary, @asanablue.

Correct @@ballardmattingly6676 No snakes, just lots of weeds.
