I'm a full time professional luthier working solo from my Colorado workshop (formally Sydney Australia). I've been making high end guitars and ukuleles since 2003.
My goal is to give excellent lutherie education be it with quick tips, or very long videos. An important element of learning lutherie is to know how long good work takes.

Why does grain matter after clear coats?
I’m talking about using the sand papers scratch patterns in the finish to see if you have removed the previous grits scratches
@BeauHannamGuitars ok so your using it as a reference
@@guitjolin yep, sand in different direction s for each grit and if you can still see the scratches going in a direction you are not sanding in, you know you haven’t removed the previous grits scratches
David is going to e excited.
This isn’t David’s- his is fancier!
It is beautiful
Thank you
we like long videos too never worry about that👍
Thank you
Lovely guitar
Thank you
Beautiful guitar, excellent tone, and genius engineering!
thanks so much
Beautiful instrument Beau Congrats it sounds deep and rich even on a tiny smartphone 👏 BTW I started playing this Martin Retro string a while back and I’m addicted there well balanced and stay nicely in tune even after six months
Thanks so much. Yer these strings sounded good
Sounds fantastic to my ears! Well done!!
Thanks
I like that subtle burst! Extremely well done!
Thank you/ first burst I’ve sprayed that light but it is nice- kinda like a Greeny Les Paul
That Strat scale trick was pure genius. So simple, yet perfectly accurate. Wow! Nice work. The guitar is lovely, sir!! I'm sure your customer will be quite pleased!
Thank you :)
That is beautiful, Beau!!
Thanks 😊
Anybody else notice that the 55hz freq of the A1 third string on a standard tuned 4-string bass is exactly 1/8 of the 440hz freq of your A string on a guitar in standard tuning?
It’s too early for Math! Hahahha
@@BeauHannamGuitars That's all I know but I imagine it's related to resonance and harmony somehow. Cheers!
😂😂😂
😊
I just use the timer on my phone...but whatever works for you😊

Some basses have more than 4 strings 1st string C 2nd string G 3rd string D 4th string A 5th string E 6th string B Some folks string their fours 1D,2A,3E,4B Some do their fives 1C,2G,3D,4A,5E All to taste, preference and need for circumstance (You know I love you, though) Many ways to do it
@@candymanexpress8 yep. When I get a 6 string bass in, I’ll do another video hahah. But if you have a 6 string bass, you probably know how to tune it
That's a great looking bass. What is it?
@@GuitarQuackery Hagstrom - I forget what year this was made - 1960’s I think
@@BeauHannamGuitars Beautiful bass. I just wish they put that strap button closer to the tip of the horn, like on a P-pass.
@@GuitarQuackery I don’t think I used it with a strap so didn’t notice that.
Beau, there‘s a mistake in the listing @ 1:24 - the 2nd string is given the same as the 1st. Kindest regards fröm GermanY 🇩🇪
@@MariUSukulele thanks for pointing that out- too late to change it now :( thankfully it’s just the second go over
I thought you were gonna burn it 😭😭😭
Hahhah
Nice bass.
Yes indeed!
Any interest in a bunch of old hagstrom 1s? I have 7
7 !!!! You could probably sell 6 Hahahha
@BeauHannamGuitars I buy guitars at auction, don't sell enough. Of the 7, there are probably 5 complete :) it's a project I plan to take on, but haven't because I'm lazy at the core :). But I love that switch design sooo much (that co er is often missing).
@@halcooper3070 these are cool Basses!
@BeauHannamGuitars almost bought a bass, it went too high. Never seen one played. Thanks for the video
@@halcooper3070 my pleasure
First
But never the second. I should say first rather then top, but either way people (beginners) get confused- I usually back it up with “the thinnest string”
I have an S6 from around 2010 that has a crack from the sound hole that goes straight up along the fretboard, exactly as you show at 3:09, but only on one side. I fear it is as you said, almost a throwaway guitar because this fix is such a hassle, and I doubt it would be worth selling with the crack present. The real stupid part is it came with the crack new 14-15 years ago when I should have returned it to the shop, but didn't for various reasons (birthday gift, first guitar, etc). Trying to decide what to do with it when I found your video... I'll probably keep it as is and if/when it becomes unplayable I'll try to do something myself. I really dislike these guitars now... ugh...
Sorry to hear it- the crack along the fretboard edge really sucks. It’s all fixable though. I have a video I have to edit shouting how to do it. As for fixing your guitar, it just depends what it’s worth. They can be fixed but the expoxy makes it harder.
I have a 1998 Seagull + Spruce (old neck attach, so it could more easily be repaired if needed). That said, my neck set 25+ years later is just as good as it was on day 1 as far as playability and external look goes). I take good care of all my guitars and minimize any drastic changes in temperature and humidity. I keep it strung with recommended gauge strings (or lighter). If I do any "up tuning", I always return it to standard tuning so I don't overstress the neck. I do the same for all my other acoustics (Martin, Taylor, Guild, and Carvin) as well.
Nice. Seagulls new (post 2006) is a great neck joint solid and stable. It’s just bad when it needs adjusting.
Do you cut the binding channels after the finish is applied?
No, before
I'm assuming you aren't finished cleaning it😅
Hahahha- no
Yamaha's Urea is harder then regular plastic. I'm happy with it compared to bone. I've tried bone and Urea in guitars...the guitar sounds the same. May have to try a tusq.... I've noticed a big difference using a Zero glide nut....it uses a stainless or nickle zero fret built into the nut....increases sustain and brightness. I love them. They stabilize the tuning. I have a zero glide in my Yamaha LL-16. The LL16 is an incredible sounding instrument...I think it outshines most of the martins...I play with 8 or 9 guys who have all the expensive martins (Every week). I've seen it embarrass a D45 and D28. The stainless zero fret nut is part of the thing....overtones are the other thing...more bottom and top....less mid's.
Tusq
How do you have alla those? Guessing through collecting or something, but still
I borrowed the exotic ones from an older luthier.
How did he get wooly mammoth ivory is my question
That piece as on loan from another luthier
.....
Where the hell do you get prehistoric ivory from? 😅 Nevermind I didn't ask that.
On loan from another luthier
Of all of these, the TUSQ caught my immediate attention. Thank you for taking the time to educate us!!
@@cindyrobbins7018 thanks- and yes, the TUSQ has the most distinct sound

Second buffer shot from the floor was weird......just sayin : O

You got the dropsies!! 🤣 Now I want to try Corian... Me personally, I tend to stick with bone.
Your a bone man! 🦴
Now you need 5 of each! Just because you can never have too many clamps.
@@davefengler4266 yep- I already want more of the second smallest dark ones
Interesting, plus the music was pretty good, too.
Hahah- thanks
On PC speakers, I could just barely tell the difference between some of them, but not enough to judge. Excellent topic, will be interesting to do live drop testing on my bench.
Tone tests on KZread are kinda dumb in that it’s all about the mic recording it and how good your speakers (and ears) are. But it is surprising to hear, like you said, many sound very similar.
@@BeauHannamGuitars the concept is solid, even if you can’t hear on PC speakers. I ordered some Tusq. Planning on measuring the f response difference on a guitar. Thanks for the sound concept😁
Thanks for the information, Beau. Especially the results and discussion about bone and tusq. You answered a lot of questions.
My pleasure
True confessions: I have used an “engineered plastic” material for the nut and saddle on all my ukuleles. I have never used a modern or pre historic bone. I started building ukuleles after I retired from the aerospace industry. I had tested a variety of plastic parts for use in very high temperature applications. The material specs of some plastics approach bone in terms of bending modulus and exceed it in strength. There are many plastics that would be way too soft, but the reenforced (30% glass filled)PEEK (poly ethyl ethyl ketone) has worked well for me.
Nice- I could do a plastics only video!!!!! Some plastic is like rubber, some hard as glass
Thank you
My pleasure
Awesome idea , I think etch a sketch was actually a 70’s toy maybe 60’a
Thanks. I loved my etch a sketch!!! Before my Commodore 64
Thanks for the effort that went into this testing and blessings on the use of bone. Great contribution👍
Thank you and my pleasure :)
I use bone, I get it up the street at the butchers.
Now I’m hungry! Hahahah 🥩
How do they know if you use elephant ivory? Spend a month to do a $5000 DNA test? I use Tusq. Can't find anyone who says, "that sounds like shit, are you using Tusq?" They're an excellent company, and I'll continue to support them
