    Copper is your best friend. Leave some pure copper in there and nothing will grow. Also scratching plastic is a very bad idea. Bacteria will live in the scratches.

    Get a 2' piece of bare solid #6 copper and toss it in the bottom. Home Depot or Liwes

    Idk. Common sense tells me the pink and red flesh underneath shouldn’t be normal. Kinda seems like ripping the finger nail off a nail bed? Is trimming not as effective? just looks awfully painful, but i’ve never had a rooster so idk. Just doesn’t look good

    Clean EACH time you fill with fresh water, using PLASTIC brush, then it only takes a minute to remove tiny bit of green each time you fill with water.

  • @gloryhillshomestead
    @gloryhillshomestead22 сағат бұрын

    We fill with fresh water two to three times a day. It’s 111 degrees here. It gets emptied and scrubbed once a week. We also add in electrolytes which are $5 a bag. That would all get waisted if I emptied it daily and would kill our water pump. We used a plastic brush for two years and it was awful. This way actually keeps it clean for longer despite what folks want to believe. Oklahoma is a different kind of beast.

    I have a question 🙋. Please excuse my ignorance. What is left behind after you removed the spurs? Looks like you just removed a hard layer but that the spurs are still there. Thanks.

  • @gloryhillshomestead
    @gloryhillshomesteadКүн бұрын

    That is a wonderful question, the part of the spur I removed was the old spur, underneath is a new one which will grow another covering like a finger nail. The spur will continue to grow, the reason you remove the outer layer of the spur is because it over time becomes dull and some times the spur will outgrow the outer layer in turn causing discomfort to the rooster.

    Pro tip. Drill a 1” hole in the middle at a 45 degree angle. Screw a broom or mop handle in and use vinegar in your scrub water. About 1/2 gallon in what you had in the tank.

    You can also use a natural cleaner like lime away or CLR and get a water circulator something that would circulate the water that would keep it from building up if the water circulates fast enough it won’t build up on the walls of your water tub for the animals

    On a new water bucket, if you will, instead of using a wire brush, use a hard bristle brush, because when you use a wire brush, you're creating all these pores grooves throughout the entire thing, which is collecting moralgae, it would be harder to get off. But if you use a hard bristle brush from the get-go, then you wouldn't have that problem. That would probably last a lot longer, too, just a thought.

  • @gloryhillshomestead
    @gloryhillshomesteadКүн бұрын

    It’s stated in the video that before this I’ve always only ever used a bristle brush or a sponge. We’ve used toilet brushes and every other stiff bristle brush we could find. It never got it clean enough and always grew back way too fast. It actually stays a lot cleaner for a lot longer this way.

    Vinegar is good for killing mildew and helps ruminants break down fiber. Adding a bit to the water will help control the mildew and improve your cattle’s health. Just like humans and Kombucha. Apple cider vinegar is the best.
