"For that matter"you COULD oxidize both the 1-butanol and 2-phenylethanol with 14-15% nitric acid using NaNO2 catalyst. At the end wash with enough NaHSO3 solution which forms the bisulfite adduct and REMOVES both aldehydes and does not touch the nitroalkane, which remains PURE, by itself!

Am very interested in seeing Part 2! I have attempted the methylenation to 3,4-MDBA twice. First time I believe my condenser wasn't efficient enough and the DCM boiled off thus I had no methyl source. The second time, I used CH2I2 and I had success. The extraction part is the bear as there is NaI and potential polymerization biproducts that dont separate out easily and contaminate both aqueous and organic layers. Steam distillation will be tried for try #3 while repeating the CH2I2 reaction; simply adding water and trying to distill was not successful. I was able to achieve success, but I know yield can be pushed higher, so cannot wait to see how you end up doing with it.
I did attempt it but the procedure I used wanted me to dry scoop the 3,4 in and it turned out awful💀I will retry but dissolving in DMSO first

When I've performed TLC and small column SEC I couldn't imagine, that once a day 10 years later I will run protein purification on columns about 1 meter in diameter )) For affinity chromatography in biotechnology usually not the ionic strenght that is used to elute a product from column, but rather competitive ligand. For example in case of Ni-IMAC which is widely used to separate Histidine-tagged protein one can use imidazole. While for ProteinA we can use pH shift to disrupt complex (usually happens at pH about 3.5).

@@chemdelic Especially from cost perspective! 800mm column with 15-20cm bed has about 100L volume. If we're talking about Protein A resin, like MabSelect you need more than $2 million just to buy a resin... empty column costs 100-150 grants.

Can I ask where you got your timing from? Or did you use TLC to see conversion? It’s just you refluxed for 2.5h and shulgin did 4 if I’m not mistaken. Is it because you used far less aldehyde?

Butan-1-ol is very soluble in water (73g/100ml). Nitroethane is only slightly soluble (4.6g/100ml). Extract the butanol-NE mixture with water in a sep funnel then drain off the lower NE layer. Dry the NE over anhydrous sodium sulfate, gravity filter and perform simple distillation to recover pure product. If you wish to recover the small amount of NE carried over into the water layer, try salting it out by dissolving NaCl into it.
