If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start.
This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs and maybe even your mind.
It could mean not eating for three or four days.
It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision.
It could mean mockery--isolation.
Isolation is the gift.
All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it.
And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds.
And it will be better than anything else you can imagine.
If you're going to try, go all the way.
There is no other feeling like that.
You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire.
You will ride life straight to perfect laughter.
It's the only good fight there is.
Charles Bukowski

The thread goes like this; “I think he meant this” or “I think he meant that” The reality is he’s full of shit, just like ever other French philosopher of he’s era. It’s garbage.

I remember seeing Jonathan Pryce on the street in soho. I so wanted to tell him how much this movie touched me and especially how much his rendition of this song (that he sang I believe) moved me to tears. Alas, I never did.

Ever since WWI Europeans have resented us. It makes sense. We have a strong anti-intellectual streak. And yet until -historically speaking -recently, we “dominated” the planet. The combination of lack of intellectual sophistication with “success” in practical affairs has been unforgivable…on the other hand, are we not Europe’s children? Where did we get the bulk of the culture with which we began? Our European siblings seem to forget that we reflect on them. We are Greece, Rome, Christianity, in “The New World.” If we’ve done it wrong, let our parents take at least some responsibility.

The best academics give clear, understandable answers that belies their deep understanding of the subject. They don't criticise the questioner or hide behind obfuscation and then give a pseudo mystical smile at the end. Monty Python got it right with their characterisation of the French soldiers in Holy Grail Silly French person.

So, in summary: until 1979, he did not let photographs being taken of him because he thought important to disappear as an author, but also because he was obsessed with his own disastifying image. It is certainly nice when the deepest philosophical imperative coincides with the most childish and narcissistic impulse. Lucky Derrida!

The irony being that apart from his pathetic French anti-Americanism , Europe and thus France is 100% dependent on the USA in terms of military security. Without the billions the USA spends on EU military Security , France etc would not be able to afford fools like Derrida. Europe's entire social welfare system state would collapse and Europe would collapse into social division, mass poverty and political violence. I would like Jacques to elaborate.

How did you deduce Derrida being anti American from just this? Critiquing something doesn't always equate to being anti.

I think the source of the ellaboration is important. If it's from a creative person when we can understand a new process. In this American type I understand what he's saying, that the end result is to simply acheive the product - like a movie.

The more I hear this song, I realize that it could be interpreted as someone who is at the end of his life and has made peace with his life, may it be a good fulfilling life or a life with regrets, but at the end, all we have is our memories, at the end we can choose to remember the good and let go of the bad. “The morning found me miles away, with still a million things to say” To me that means that there are so many things left unsaid as we wither away. “Now, as twilight dims the sky above” Could mean that death is near. “Recalling thrills of our love. There's one thing I'm certain of Return I will to old Brazil” That could mean that as we let go, we will find the calmness of our beloved memories (i.e. spouse, children, etc)

The elaborating issue is not always a negative thing. Many times when someone is asked to elaborate on something, it means that the person asking the question is interested and wants to know more. Perhaps it is the context that makes the difference. While Monsieur Derrida seems to see such questioning as condescending, I think he is a bit narrow-minded and over sensitive, if not a bit unnecessarily hostile about the matter.

So I am to choose between encapsulated and open-ended. And too bad Derrida is gone, but American refers to anyone born between Patagonia and Northern Canada, not only USA's citizens. So the definition and irony of it escaped him; it is fertile ground for more abusiveness to "Americans".
