The moment I realised this is about Return of the Jedi I was switching off. I despise that movie. Two brilliant films followed by 🐕 💩

Thank you for this! My dad had this on VHS when I was a kid and I watched it over and over. It’s so great to see it again and in such a good restoration! 🎉🎉🎉

I still remember a time as a child in 1983 when I saw this on PBS knowing it might be the last source of Star Wars footage ever. Then came Ewok Movies and Saturday Morning Cartoons. Then came the Prequels. Then came the new cartoons. Then came Disney. Maybe I was right in 1983.

13:08: Now that A.I. tech has been able to isolate John Lennon’s voice for the new Beatles song, could it be done to do the same for this track (which is in the film but was never released), by removing Mark’s voice and other sounds?

I think he'd still make them mostly the way they turned out (maybe with a few differences, since the lore was still developing in his mind at the time).

i have a question: a lot of behind the scenes clips in this were reused in the 2004 Empire Of Dreams documentary in slightly higher quality but in shorter duration. could one theoretically crossfade those clips against the VHS clips to get a slightly higher quality version?

Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are quite simply the three greatest and most influential films ever created. They are the blueprint for almost every movie that has been released since. The Holy Grail of modern cinema without question.

This is magical. Haven’t seen this since I was a child. It’s criminal it’s not on any DVD/Blu Ray release as it’s absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for uploading this. I’m ready for the 40th release of Return of the Jedi and watching this has got me feeling 9 years old again.

I "really really really" want to see the whole Japanese laserdisc master of this documentary uploaded on the internet only because the laserdisc for this documentary has a little bit higher video quality than the VHS plus it's the only way to watch the special in high quality. If someone has the Japanese laserdisc of From Star Wars to Jedi "please" upload the laserdisc master of this documentary on Internet Archive.

I liked the artistry of the movies, which is why I liked this documentary.. Wars are always fought over money, not over family rifts unless it involves political power and money. So, I really don't agree with the themes, but they're fun films all the same.

Had this on VHS, lent it to a friend and never got the fucking thing back. At the time we thought this was gonna be the last taste of Star Wars we’d ever get and we clung to it like a last grain of chocolate.

Catching this video again after who knows how many years, I find it sad that all of the good, hard work from the people who put together the Max Reebo band was replaced by that cgi sequence in the Specialized version, whatever that was.

in 1989 90 when i bought this vhs I kept watching it over and over im 51 now its emotional but also sad because George lost his mind around 1997 when the special edistions came out i only watch the theatrical cuts the prequals and all the new Disney stuff is not Star Wars ot at least not my generation star wars anyways the magic of practical effects and model; will never be replaced by cgi

"I did the 1st film I DIDN'T KNOW THAT (awkward stumble) err how the public would take all this and that it would be as successful as it was and DARTH VADER WOULD BECOME THE CHARACTER THAT HE BECAME and so when I got down to the 2nd film, I had to make a decision about whether I was really gonna go through with this thing of HIM BEING HIS FATHER." To me when George says ''I didn't know that'' then awkwardly pauses this is him slipping up on his lie that Darth vader was always meant to be luke's father. Why would Lucas intend for the wise Obi Wan to say a massive lie to Luke? Obi Wan never mentions the name Anakin to Luke in a new hope, he refers to Darth Vader as Darth to his face, like it's a first name. Vader was not once hinted at being Luke's father in a new hope. All Vader sensed was that the force was strong with the pilot he was chasing on the death star. He did not sense 2 skywalkers on the Death star earlier, only Obi Wan. For certain though, in the first film he did not know that Leia would be the twin sister of Luke, with Luke's crush on her and Vader's interactions with Leia and Leia not having the force back this up.

I haven't seen this documentary for about 30 years. I, like many others in this thread watched this nearly as many times as the actual films, I pretty much had all of Mark Hammil's commentary memorised. Watching it again has been a joy especially with the added high definition footage. Absolutely brilliant work, and thank you so much.

31:36 ... I KNEW Han originally said "Trust Me" not... "I can see a lot better now".... phew, thought I was going crazy. Also, the Trust Me makes more sense as a phrase between the characters given their past.

Man, when I was a kid I just ate this kind of thing up! I would intensely watch any kind of 'behind the scenes' making of docs or shows about my favorite movies. Filmmaking in the 70s & 80s was just as exciting to see behind the camera as it was on the screen.
