The equivalent and stability of flying a box kite with an underpowered engine. Way too windy, way too tight of turns for conditions. On a calm day you could throttle off a bit to settle her down to land. On a windy day you'd need a lot of throttle and control to fly it to the ground or it's going to stall and flop just like it did. Crashing one is an expensive way to learn the plane's primitive characteristics. Glad he walked away. He's now part of an exclusive club of perhaps 3 pilots that crashed a Bleriot .......that are even still alive today over 100 years later.

The pilot made many mistakes during that flight! Turning sharply reduced the speed on the inner wing and it showed the effect and consequences of that a number of times. The pilot should have felt the situation, by the seat of his pants, before it happened. He induced it all himself. Pity really. He should have known and put that nose down immediately, even if he had to land prior than he intended. Glad that he was not hurt apart for his self-esteem! All those many hours of dedicated construction ruined, due to lack of attention!
@keithwhisman5 жыл бұрын
I have the same conclusion. What really did him in is the wind though.. but he should’ve known better, the only reason why he didn’t crash when the wing tip dipped down to the ground really close to the ground is that he was flying into the wind and that saved him as airspeed almost always will. Yep, he did it to himself.

I'm surprised that the Bleriot could fly that slow. Wing warping aircraft are hard to fly on a windy day as the control is so subtle. You can really see the wing flexing around either intentionally or not. It was flying well but was under powered and the pilot got into a box of wanting altitude and not enough power to get there. The early aircraft types crashed so slowly that survival was quite high as long as the mistake was made close to the ground. All the pioneer aircraft were really tail heavy so a constant forward push on the elevator was needed at all times so the mushing behavior of this Bleriot was just flying with neutral trim. Wanting altitude and pushing down is confusing so this crash happened a lot back then.

You are mistaken. An aircraft does not know if it is going upwind or downwind, only a ground observer can judge that. It flies in the air. Going too slow, however, can obviously cause a stall, that is a different matter. The "up-wind down-wind" argument is a cause of amusement to full-size and model aircraft flyers. Non-flyers find it hard to understand. To try to understand, imagine you are in a plane flying 100kph to the North- a wind from the North starts blowing head-on at 100kph.Your plane does not suddenly drop from the sky, you are still subject to the laws of aerodynamics , air is still flowing over your plane. You just stop making headway. You are still flying, just going no-where.
