HE IS AWSOME i love him
I saw this video and recalled that I have this set of comics... took them out to look at them and just realised that my 1st copy has 2 covers...
How weird.
Always LOVED the fun silliness of CapWolf!
He just looks cool too!
Today Jonathan came to my comic art studio for a workshop that he and his son were taking part in. I knew he’d done some work for this comic, but hadn’t realised he’d done this back up until he gave me the gift of this issue and pointed it out. Incredible! He’s even seen your review too, thought you’d like to know that! Keep 'em coming!
@@marcjackson550 very cool. 😊 thank you.
I was literally talking about that issue to him and he reached into his bag and there was the comic! So cool!
Woah. Just woah 🤯
That is a cool cover!
Yeah very iconic looking.
Is there another run with Wolverine in the Savage Land? Maybe from the 80s/90s? I distinctly remember a panel where Wolverine gets impaled by a spear and keeps fighting but I can't remember the comic run.
Was there a Spidey Wolvie Savage land story by Joe Mad? I think so.
@@MichaelFitzTroyTV I will look into it.
Poor bastard. Brilliant cartoonist, effortlessly puts smile on my face. Let's hope for Peep Show omnibus from Fanta.
That’s a really good idea.
An excellent issue!
Good review and lil profile of Joe Matt. I still have to read Spent which I got during a recycled books haul last year. Yeah why all these guys anxious and nebbish?!? I some times I'd yell OL at the characters thoughts..
I need to catch up.
Your review has me intrigued!
It’s so very Good.
It wasn't a fork weapon, it was just a regular Katana, I'm surprised he didn't use his energy Sword, but the energy shields did the trick
I have a first print
How much is this comic book worth
Less than 10 dollars
How many more hidden Byrne books is there?
Agree! This book is really good💯
Can someone tell me what Phantom Lady (Sandra Knight) is like in terms of character? I can't find her personality anywhere on the internet
Thank you doing this amazing video Michael! In answer to your question regarding the colors, I always color everything initially in CMYK. I choose the basic swatches that photoshop has available (pastel, light, and pure) because they have zero black in them. Once that's done I add a layer of 10% yellow set to multiply on top of everything so that the colors are more unified and to give the paper the off-white tint of an older comic.
Very cool! Thanks for answering my burning questions. 😊
Oh this is Awesome!
@@happyscorpion11 thank you!
You are Welcome!@jasonkochis
Amazing art! Looking forward to your cover art. 🎨😎👍🏼
Me too! Hahah
Thanks so much for the kind words Michael! I’m so glad you enjoyed the book :)
My pleasure. It’s a true manga treasure.
The coloring switches from yellow to green back to yellow on Marrina in this book, doesn't it?
perfect review 🙏🏼
Thx Soner!
Hello, do you know where I can order it? Thank you very much
Amazon eBay
@@MichaelFitzTroyTV Thank you
Take a shot every time Wolverine says “I go where I wanna go,” and “I’m the best there is at what I do, and what I do isn’t very nice,” and you’ll be unconscious by the fourth episode.
And rehab by the 5th
Reunited and it feels so good!
Wow this looks fantastic, will check if my lcs got it in. Really hyped for this story now and we getting batman the last halloween in September 😊
these look rad!
I can guarantee it. 😊
New Leonardi! On newsprint! Added to shopping list:)
The letterer, Taylor Esposito, is an awesome teacher and an overall cool guy! Just wanted everyone to know haha. He's super cool and I feel very blessed by his lettering wisdom in class.
Very cool!
I was but a kid when this run started. I can appreciate what he did now, but at the time I hated it. He made so many of the characters look so ugly that child me was disappointed for several months in a row at the spinner rack. I suspect that is an unpopular opinion but as a kid I didn’t expect my heroes to look so unappealing.
It’s not for everyone
SOLD!!!
Haha! Awesome Mac. You’re gonna love it! You should get his book The Jump as well. It’s outstanding.
John Byrne's Wonder Woman is the best Wonder Woman.
John Byrne is the best he is at what he does!
This is a great comic. I’m definitely gonna pick up issue 2. I grew up skating and reading comics and made friends through skateboarding like the main character in this story does. It’s a story I relate to, even tho I grew up in the 2000s and not the 80s.
I just read this issue. I’ll be reading issues 47-52 next. I also grew up in the Midwest so it’s cool to see super heroes in the Midwest. They always seem to be in New York or in this case the west coast. Ghost rider final vengeance is based in Chicago and that book is pretty good. Also the exceptional X-men book that comes out in a couple months will be about Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost starting a X-men team in Chicago. As a Chicagoan, I’ll have to check it out. I’ll at least give the first issue a shot.
I just finished reading these first 4 issues of the run. Didn’t know you had a video on it. Love the content man! Keep it up.
I have lots of Byrne content! More to come!
Did you read Claremont’s Wolverine Madripoor knights mini series that came out right before this one? I really enjoyed that book and how it tied into X-men 268 (great issue). I do agree that the art isn’t super compelling, but it gets the job done. I love buying new Claremont X-books in the year of our lord 2024. Next year is the 50th anniversary of his run on X-men, so I hope he has something special for next year when we celebrate 50 years of Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler (and oh yeah thunderbird (rip)).
Missed Mdripoor nights.
@@MichaelFitzTroyTV You should check it out. I would give X-men 268 a read or reread before you do. I think the trade paperback is coming out soon, now that the series is wrapped up. I prefer reading the floppy comics if I can.
I love Stegman! His Spidey is one of my favorites, he's so good. The colorist makes or breaks him though. And I really dig all the new designs. Scott's new costume is sexy and slick as F. Totally agree about the muscles on costumes haha. I want to jump back in because Nostalgia, but the FCBD issue turned me off (yes i know that was written by Simone, a different writer, but still represents current books) and I think I just sort of gave up on X-Men, im sad to sad. I still always pop back checking in on Spidey to see if I can ever come back home, but the Bendis run made me give up on X-Men for good, I think. The magic of following characters I knew was lost when all the characters stopped being those same people. And Jed doesn't inspire confidence in me. Moon Knight was literally my first Marvel book and by virtue became my favorite. His run was..... serviceable. It was good. But not MY Moon Knight, and I actually dropped the title at renumbering, being annoyed at his plotlines of vegan good-guy vampires and wiping away all the connections to the previous series. Yuck, no thanks. I already regret staying on as long as I did. Marvel was a dummy relaunching wirh a new Number 1, gave me a good jumping off point. And yeah Magik looks pretty silly with that sword. I just cant buy her swinging that thing around, its gotten comically big over time (but its been that way a good long minute). Maybe its the 90s kid in me, but I can buy Juggernaut turning good. In the Spider-Girl books (alternative future about Spider-Man's daughter) Juggs had turned good and was on Avengers, so I always saw that as his trajectory, just like Sandman had gone good (at the time).
Amen to all of that!
Thanks for reviewing this Michael. Not sure what I think about it either. I'm like you, a total Claremont fan. I always want to give X-Men a chance because of my love for them, but . . .
Yeah. Maybe it’s just us. Lol
Thanks for covering this, Michael! I really dig the Milgrom inks on JB’s pencils. The story counts down backward in time from the point of the heroes’ collective demise #12 (#1) to their first formations in #1 (#12). It’s set in that nebulous Marvel time before the first appearance of the FF, and takes into account the real world publication date of around 2000. It can be headache inducing if one thinks about it too hard. My favorite characters are Pixie and Oxbow. But Walkabout is also awesome, and so many others are very cool as well. It would have been great to see more of these characters. For a sidecar reading experience, seek out Marvel Universe #4 - #7, also written by Stern, and drawn by Mike Manley (with assists from Bret Blevins). It details the pre-superhero adventures of Dr. Druid, Bloodstone, Makkari (the Eternal), and the female ancestor of the Black Panther. And it’s awesome. All the best!
Stegman's cover art is soo much better than his interior art. After watching this whole video, I don't think you liked it, but you said it accurately when you said that there is an audience for this.
There is! And I think it will be and deserves to be a hit. I’ll try to hang in there!
Have you read Marc Guggenheim's "X-Men Gold" run? For me, he came the closest of capturing everyone's voice and personality as close to Claremont than anyone in decades. I completely agree with you about Magik's sword.
Haha! I haven’t read it. Maybe I will.
I always loved the Stern/Byrne team
Never knew about this maxi series. Thanks
good video, did not know the Facsimile edition came out. Love the Annual as a kid and where as I would usually agree with the paper needing to be newsprint not here. Closer to how his art looked on that beautiful Marvel Fanfare paper back in the day.. Good job
Good analogy with Marvel Fanfare! One of my favorites.
Wow two videos in one day hecka cool! Had no idea this series even existed. I recall Brubaker tackling a similar idea with a series called Marvel Project diving into the Atlas era stuff in context for modern times, although it went in a way different direction. I hate the "countdown" nunbering gimmick. And dang Byrne just knows what he's doing, look at that double page spread at the beginning of the first issue. THAT is how you hook a reader. He's so good at taking advantage of the medium in ways I see so many others ignore. That said, this isnt some of my favorite Byrne art I've seen. Lady with the Skrull was giving me major Liefeld vibes (i love Liefeld, but not other artists i also like doing Liefeld style). Am i totally off the mark there, or does anyone know what i mean? Looking forward to your overviews of the remaining issues.
Hot damn this book looks so wild fun. Agreed about the coloring muddying the art, and dang this art is cool. You always pull out or find the coolest stuff I've never heard of. I don't always have the same taste in material, but your comic reviews (and knowledge) are always my favorite takes. Watching your vids makes me feel like I'm 10 years old again loitering in the comic shop, captivated by that "cool" nerdy high schooler I crushed on as he spent seemingly hours schooling me on comic history. I never could have gotten into X-Men properly at the time without that guy, bless him.
That’s awesome! You made my day!
The book comes off as a cheesy 80's action flick!
Haha you’re right.
Love Samuree!!!!!!
It's a brazilian edition of 1987. You have a great channel and are very knowledgeable.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!!
