I don't mean any offence to Peter Lewis or the rest of the Grape but as an 12 year old in 1967 I took one look at this album cover and thought "this looks like one rich kid (Peter) was supporting a bunch of talented Grunges". It seems I was right. Music brought us all together in those days.

Godspeed Jerry Miller and Skip Spence. Peter Lewis played an excellent fingerpicking style. Listen to his snaky lines on Eight O'Five. Brilliant.

It was interesting. Moby Grape 69 might have been their best "produced" and good for 1969. The debut album album is still their best. 20 Granite Creek was not bad either. Jerry Miller could´ve been a good Nashvile studio player. Give Moby Grape credit , they never quit after disasters.

One of the main reasons I never wanted to be a professional musician is because, in general, the music business is so full of crooks. Katz ruined arguably the most talented band to come out of the mid-60s SF scene. If there's a hell, I hope he is roasting. I grew up in SF and lost count of how many times I saw Moby Grape. This was a great interview but a really cautionary tale for those musicians who want to make it big.

Amidst all that is a slice of Hollywood offspring culture-Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day), Candace Bergen (daughter of Edgar), and of course Peter himself (son of Loretta Young). I half-expected Dino, Desi & Billy to swoop in. 😏 Insane story! Thanks.

Amazing - thank you for this interview! I was at the early 1990s gig. It was at the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati CA, and Peter recounted the story of going down to get Bob Mosely from under the bridge off I5. The band sounded great, and we had no idea we were seeing an historic reunion, however brief. I think the band performed as The Melvilles.

Stu's compliments of other artists seem like back handed insults to John. Too bad he's so bitter he can't just give John the credit he deserves. I've heard Tom's solo stuff. Even his "hits" are kinda silly and I wouldn't buy them for sure. Never heard of this Rocky guy so I doubt he's the best rock vocalist, but everyone can have their own opinion. Did Rocky make the Rock and Roll HoF?

I disagree with some of the comments. When the Beatles started, it was John and Paul who started it, George and ringo were added, John and Paul did all of the writing except for some by George. But with creedence, the 3 started together, and apparently they wanted Tom because they seen Him as a big plus to the band at first, guess because of his talent at the beginning. Why couldn't john just let the other 3 just sing once and awhile? It's like when I saw George Harrison in that movie, he was singing lead and I thought, oh man, George is singing lead to this one and I loved it!!! John didn't even let these guys sing backup except a few times, he may have wrote the songs, but he wrote them for just him alone. You know, I don't care who the top guy is, the band was the band and that's who I want to watch. I find myself looking at old ccr clips then I do looking at John by himself. There's blame to go both ways, and it's sad such friends from high school 7th grade doing something together made them all famous to have such animosity towards each other especially at such an old age. They're all millionaires, so what the hell. John takes credit for writing the songs, but weren't the songs for the band ? Didn't he write the songs for all of them? All I know is, Jesus said if you don't forgive you won't be forgiven! Way to late in age to be acting this way. Besides, isn't it God alone who gave them all their lives and their talent? I wouldn't be crediting myself in such a way knowing that Jesus gave His life for all, he gave it free! Better forgive and forget before its to late.

Being a great Fogerty fan ..I don't under stand and I don't want to ...but when CCR were inducted into the Hall of fame. It disappoints me that john didn't want to perform with Stu and Doug......they worked their guts out to....when creedence were at their peak.. ..all the best Stu and Doug👍👍JSW AUSTRALIA

John had more than one hit once he left Creedence. First a cover of Jambalya, then from Centerfield The Old Man Down The Road, Rock and Roll Girls and Centerfield. While not hits, John wrote two songs that have become iconic, Rockin’’ All Over The World performed by Status Quo to open Live Aid and Almost Saturday Night covered by Bruce Springsteen and one of John’s heroes Ricky Nelson. Stu will not admit that without John Fogerty there is no Creedence, no hits, and no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Gee sounds like a jerk, I think Mardi Gras was real bad….because Stu and Doug were just part of the band but John was the band, then he says Fogerty had no hits, he could’t record because of lawsuits, when he did I think Centerfield was pretty big…right? Whadda bum!

I learned EVERY note on the first album. I was there at the Fillmore when the back cover photo was shot (big red balloon). The Moby Grape story makes me hate the music business. A true horror and pathetic nightmare. I did a record and tour with the first band signed to EMI America (Spellbound) and that spit me out of the music business permanently. Just the world’s most evil horrible people in the music business.

…when is someone gonna write a book on this guy already? I mean, give him 30 seconds and he’ll turn in a guitar solo part that you’ll remember for the rest of your life! Example: Oh Sherry. I mean, come on… Only The Lonely, too. Another guy who can do this exact thing is Eliot Easton!

What Peter said about the ultra view of SF psychadelic rock as THE answer to life everafter was so correct. I thought being in our band in those days was fun, and had NO answers to anything EXCEPT fun and entertainment. The problem with adding drugs to the whole scene is they tend to make the musicians philosophers; zealots w/o knowledge, hypocrites as hippies.
