Great Lakes Fly & Outdoors
Great Lakes Fly & Outdoors
Hello and welcome to Great Lakes Fly & Outdoors. I have created this channel to demonstrate how I violate the social norms of fishing by pursuing techniques not often used to target certain species. This can be anything from making lures of my own design, to fishing from a dinghy in places others wouldn't take such a vessel, and even using rods that might be considered too small by some anglers to catch huge fish. I also love to use my fly rod in locations that seem impossible to make a cast. Some of my techniques may be used by everyone, but others are born from my own imagination. If there's one thing I want fellow fishermen and fisherwomen to take from my channel, it would be that its so much fun to think outside the box. If you have a dream or hypothesis on how to go out and do something crazy to catch a fish, do it!!! I am currently in nursing school so I will be posting videos at least once a month. And when I'm on break, I will post every other week. Tight lines!!

Cool footage!
Thank you, fish were really hard to find the other day so I thought a video about temp breaks might be helpful. It's also interesting to notice that the walleye near the temp break or above are way more active, and the ones below almost look like they're resting. I saw a lot of guys with panoptics and livescope not catching anything in the deeper cold water areas, yet I was landing walleye on my fly rod in 24-17 ft.
Yes, great video. I appreciate the footage and the knowledge you’ve shared. I was out yesterday fishing the thirty foot areas and a friend in his boat was fishing the 20 foot in the same vicinity; Must not have been fish in the area or none of them were hungry- of course none of us may have offered them something tantalizing.
would love to see more
Thats the plan my friend, thanks for checking out my stuff. I plan to shoot a lot more videos in the Chicago lakefront area!!
This is great!
Thank you, it was a surprising find for me. I didn't expect to see so many fish on this day!
Nice job! I'm starting my trailer project soon. Did you sand down your 2x4 bunks before stapling the carpet on? The wood i have sourced is dimpled from pressure treatment
Thank you! I actually just put the carpet right on the wood. I installed the staples on the ends, sides, and underneath because I was worried if one broke loose it could damage the haul.
Where is did you drop the drone in, like what f8shing spot/ location
This was in Lake Geneva, which is in Lake Geneva Wisconsin
You definitely need longer neck for this one
Like longer trailer tounge?
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 yes
How fast can this trailer go?
I got 65, but the tires say 45. I have operated it in this way for years without issues
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 thanks
How in the World in USA they dont produce affordable sib trailers?
Thats such a great question!!! I got lucky with this build but unless one can find a decent jetski trailer, 1500$ and up is the burden of cost!
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 very true
What time of year is the best time to do this thanks!
Hey, thanks for asking and checking out my video! On the South and West side of Lake Michigan, mid March to late May is typically the best time. Fall can also be good buts its hard to get be on the lake front when the salmon are on the beach.
very good so i subscribe
Thank you so much for your comment and support!
Wow! Amazing footage. Was it shot on October 18?
Thank you, yeah, I was actually late to the salmon run. This year I want to get up to the weir earlier so I can get some more footage like this.
Awesome 👍
Thank you!
😳😯😲
👍Very cool!
Thank you! I actually went out hoping to film some trout or salmon but unfortunately, they have moved off shore. But the was plenty of native LM fish which I thought made for a cool video. They seem to love the drone, I felt accepted into their school, lol.
Wow! I found an amazing video that taught me how to do surf fly fishing. I plan to start surf fly fishing in Lake Huron this Fall, aiming to catch a 10-lb Atlantic salmon or brown trout.
I'm so glad to hear that, as I said in the video this took many years to understand so hopefully it expedites the process for you/ Keep me posted, I hope you get into some serious fish, tight lines!
So cool man! I’d love to be able to check out my favorite fishing spots and see what’s really going on down there!
Thank you!!! And I hear ya, the drone has been really eye-opening, especially in spots that are really productive. It's not easy to operate but through many hours of practice, the ROV is really providing a lot of helpful insight on fish behavior. This was a pretty cool find because Alewife are hard to film due to their skittish nature.
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 so I’m in a pretty unique situation, directly off of our dock about 150 ft out we have a series of shelves and drop offs that the lake trout LOVE. Not only that, but it’s a relatively small lake with not a lot going on at the bottom - so they seem to congregate in a few areas. It’s almost guaranteed that at any given time there will be action down there and would love to be able to explore it!
@@swivels That would be awesome to explore!! Drop-offs are crazy to traverse with the ROV, I always find something crazy, typically a big ass fish whos curious about the nose my drone makes. I think the biggest fish I have seen on a drop was a 40 but more likely 50-plus-inch pike on 35 ft of water.
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 Definitely would be interesting! How well does the camera do below 100ft depth?
Nice vid. I don't see any zebra or quagga mussels. You sure this is Lake M?
Sure is Milwaukee actually. Because there is so much active spawning at this time, the Brown trout have more or less cleared all the zebra muscles out with there tails when building their spawn beds.
If you send me that M4, I'll run it in my pin tumbler and send it back to you. It should smooth it out nicely.
I appreciate that, this piece sold before this video was even published. But I tend to just adapt my mold-making technique because I want it to be as smooth as possible when it comes out of the mold. I rarely tumble my work because it can remove aspects of the piece that I don't want to lose. I do tumble silver bullets though.
These are really good. I just started placing ultrasound guided IVs and while the insertion part itself has not been difficult, I know I would benefit from instructional videos like this describing what we are seeing on the screen itself, for example, tortuous veins, bifurcations etc and what to do in these scenarios
Thank you for your comment, and for checking out my video. I'm actually working on creating a few more videos about those topics. With a rise in complicated vasculature, the areas you mentioned are critical skills that only benefit the inserter to understand in great depth. My next video is about needle tip tracking. This is a skill I see a lot of people struggle with when it comes to deeper cannulation or insertions where there are anatomical structures close to the target vein that must be avoided.
Very cool. Just fun take that to your LCS and see what they will give you for it.
I actually sent them a picture of it. I'm still waiting for them to respond, lol.
Is that the only Smallmouth in Chicago?
Possibly, jk, there's so many down there.
Keep up the good work! ❤
Thank you!! I'm actually really excited to be filming in Chicago. Besides the fish, there are really cool things to find in the water from the past, or from people chucking things in the water in the present.
Youre underwater footage is always phenomenal! What type of underwater drone are you using I need to get one!
Thank you!! I'm using an industrial-grade ROV, it's called M2 Pro.
Nice! I belive that's similar to the one our department uses for underwater recoveries.
Awesome footage man is this on Lake Geneva?
Thank you! It is, this particular clip was shot on the west side of Williams Bay, right at the mouth. I found the Pike in about 35 feet of water, I was searching the drop-off when it swam up to me. Very cool experience, makes me feel like an alien visiting another planet.
Something tells me a mayfly ain't gonna cut it for dinner. That would be the equivalent to a crumb for a 200 pound man.
lol, you never know. They were eating single egg patterns and small stone flies.
Great video! Thank you for showing us.
Wishing I was casting rn
I loved this piece so much on reddit! Really good craftsmanship! ❤🔥
Thank you for the kind words, and for coming and checking my video out. I wasn't sure if anyone would see the link
Great piece showcased on Reddit. Those are some really nice piece you're showing here too. Really informative video, you have me wanting to try my hand at pouring myself. Great video! You're definitely ready for a werewolf apocalypse.
Thank you for checking out my work. It means so much to me to be able to share it with you. And a werewolf would be in a bit of a pickle if they came looking for me, lol.
Well, with my random selection, you won the first piece of silver, I am debating on sending you a coin or a small piece I made. Do you want to send me a message on Reddit with your address? Thank you again for your kind comment:)
Love me some shiny!
So cool! Thanks for sharing the video - would love to get into this someday
Thanks for checking my video out. I hope you do get into it, it's such a fun hobby!
You won the second piece of silver, I think I am going to send you a Samari 1 ounce bar. For what ever reason that seems like the piece for you, not sure why, lol. Do you want to send me your mailing address on Reddit?
Very cool video!
Thank you!!
Saw your beretta 92fs pour. That’s truly amazing work.
Thank you, and thanks for coming over from Reddit!! I wasn't sure if people would see the little sneak attack giveaway.
It was definitely sneaky. Barely caught it and I had looked at that post a few times
Great info. Just getting started with casting and it's hard finding all the info in one place, thanks
Absolutely, and I am glad to hear this, that's exactly why I made this video. I've heard that from a lot of people who want to get started.
Nice! I've been wanting to play around with copper like this.
You should, but I will say fine silver pours way easier. But coppers a really beautiful and strong metal to work with.
Awesome!
Thank you!
FIRE! And it was very educational. Plus...FIRE!
lol, lots of fire. Thank you it was a fun video to make and I hope it helps others get started in the fun world of silver smithing.
good stuff
Thank you, glad to be able to share this hobby with others!
WAY TOO COOL!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!
Awesome stuff! Looking forward to more!
I appreciate you saying that and also for checking out my work!!
I can't wait to build a work space to start this hobby good information
Thank you for checking it out, and I am excited for you to get started with this awesome hobby!!!
So cool
Thanks, Matt, its crazy to see whats lurking out there. I found these fish on my first drone dive on this lake. Nothing on the fish finder, but 20 feet off my boat I found the smallmouth which led me to the muskie.
Your camera bouncing around gave me a headache trying to watch your video.
Nice, it was one of my early videos.
Dude awesome footage Tim 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!! Exploring the drop-offs on Lake Geneva, do you ever get out there to fish at all?
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 never. Just once for Musky a few years ago with Pat by boat. I'd love to again tho. Just not aware of what's publicly fishable.
That's a submarine
Two submarines meeting in the depths, lol. Very cool find, I'm excited to search these drop-offs this summer. The one in this video, I was in about 35 feet when I found this pike, but the drop went another 90 feet further with marks seen on my fishfinder.
@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 that's pretty awesome. I don't think pike hang around 90'deep but can't wait!!! What do think how big was this one?
That thing is gorgeous
This Pike was so cool. The lake I found it on is huge and has some really cool drop-offs. The drop I found it on is a shelf that starts at 15 feet and then aggressively drops to 125. This Pike was found at about 35 all by itself. This was a big fish and it was so cool to spend time with it. The clip is short but it hung around for a good 15 minutes before it swam deeper down the drop.
rhat little guy!?!? 🙄
This pike should measure around 40 plus inches according to how it is presented on my drone screen. For the viewer, there's little reference but I have caught enough fish that I have seen prior on my drone to understand its size.
@@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 I've caught and measured hundreds of pike - I agree that's pushing 40. At least close to it.
sooo coool!!!!💚💪😎
Thank you, found him in around 35 ft of water on a drop-off. It was the first time I had explored this area and just sent my drone straight down the drop.
The great lakes spotted muskies are beautiful fish. Looks like a productive weed bed with all the fish hanging out there.
They really are! And yes quite the productive weed bed. I love how all the different species are hanging out together, with no fear of the large Muskie
Love that footage!!
Thank you, I wish I understood what I was seeing, at the time I thought it was a big pike. It wasn't until afterwards I realized it was a Muskie. Such a beautiful fish!!
