Grant Dermody

Grant Dermody

While this channel offers free harmonica lessons & tutorials, my goal goes beyond that: to teach you how to find your authentic sound, and to freely express yourself, open up, and relax into a bigger tone. You will learn how to pick up melodies quickly, lay a groove down, play better with other artists, and develop the skills that it takes to become a truly great harmonica player.
-
"While Grant Dermody (DER-muh-dee) has been hailed as a harmonica player, singer, songwriter, and teacher with an approach intrinsically tied to acoustic blues and Chicago blues, his musical reach extends well beyond any singular genre. With three previous albums as a solo artist, another three recorded in tandem with his various bands and wide and varied appearances on nearly two dozen recordings by other artists - Eric Bibb, Dirk Powell, Dan Crary and Cedric Watson, among them - Dermody is now recognized the world over as one of the most profound and prolific harp players making music today."

Thank you Grant. I attended a workshop in NJ you did years ago with sponsored by the best little harp house. You were a great teacher. I also got to meet and continue to learn from the great Peter Trip Henderson. A harmonica virtuoso and all around good man.

1:40 Mark. tongue block the 2 hold draw and then get the cord that follows it? Are we literally just blocking the 2 with out tongue then letting off and drawing over 123?

I just use a Tremolo harp. The bigger the better for the acoustics, like the large double sided types.

Thanks, Grant. Yes, it's a great tongue blocking exercise for practicing switching between single notes and chords, but, of course, the chords (i.e. those full chords) on the "Oh, Susanna" part aren't exactly the most suitable chords, but again, it's a great way to practice the technique.
