    Perfect timing. I am planning a dress as a gift, but I had forgotten about this foot, resulting in wavy uneven edges on the dress I made for myself. Now I won’t be embarrassed if the recipient checks out the seams.

    Hello, thank you for this. I’m very new to sewing. When I used my overcast foot for the first time and I changed the width, I broke a needle. I thought that was maybe because the width was too narrow and that the needle maybe hit that bar in the middle? I am trying to find information on this. It was okay when I followed the Brother manual guide exactly, but I feel afraid now to try different widths. I am interested in trying the one you did that imitates the serger’s rolled hem though. I’d like to find out more.

    You should try a side cutter foot for your sewing machine. All that a side cutter foot is an overcast foot with a blade. The big difference is that the side cutter foot cuts off the excess fabric just like a serger does. It does straight, zigzag, and many of the overcast stitch settings on your machine. I bought the Brother SA177 for my sewing machine. It costs less than $50.00 dollars.Much less than a serger. If you go on Amazon the side cutter SA177 has great reviews and has videos explaining how to use it. It’s not as fast as a serger but will go as fast as you can push the foot pedal.

    @@bethupton385 I’m really not sure. However you can post a question on Amazon and someone should answer. I know your sewing machine needs to be low shank. This side cutter works mainly on wovens. I have heard different things about knits. Some say not so good and others say if you use starch to stiffen the fabric they’ve had success. I figure knits don’t ravel so I’m fine just using the overcast foot or a straight stitch and using pinking shears for a cosmetic look. I ordered a side cutter that looks like a walking foot and didn’t have much success with it from Amazon and had no problems returning it. So you could order the SA177 and if it doesn’t fit or you’re not happy with it always return it. 2 things I advise always use your hand wheel before sewing with the side cutter to make sure the needle is not going to hit a part of the side cutter foot. Also they caution to put bobbin in and make sure your sewing machine is threaded before putting side cutter foot on because you can break the automatic needle threader. Just watch videos on Amazon and KZread and practice. I hope this helps.

    The dials should be in what position?

  • @MyGoldenThimble
    @MyGoldenThimble14 күн бұрын

    I have heard that some sewists like to turn their dials to 0 when they are threading their machines. Personally I have never done that (I leave them as they are) and I had never had issues with it.

    The unfinished edges don't fray down and eventually pop out? (genuine question, not tryin to be rude). Otherwise, excellent video, I can't wait to try this :)

  • @MyGoldenThimble
    @MyGoldenThimble14 күн бұрын

    Hi Marisa, the raw edges are on the inside of the bag, so they are very unlikely to fraw down. The fraw down and pop out, can happen when raw seams are exposed and they are constantly fraying with objects or the body (in case of clothes). But when they are completely lined and inside of both layers, they will be just fine. Hope that helps.

    Doesn’t cutting the squares on the bottoms loosen the seam? Would the threads come out? I’m going to try this right now, but I’m hand sewing, am I supposed to use a special stitch?

  • @alyssafish163
    @alyssafish16322 күн бұрын

    No, because when you pinch the seams and make a new line of stitching, the new line will lock in the previous stitch. Just don't pull apart your previous row of stitches. Alternatively, instead of sewing two squares together, you could use one long rectangle, fold it in half and then just sew up the sides.
