The Alan Turing Institute

We are the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.

We believe data science and artificial intelligence will change the world. We are pioneers; training the next generation of leaders, shaping the public conversation, and pushing the boundaries of these sciences for the public good.

The Turing is buzzing with activity, from new research collaborations to lectures and workshops.

Wow so much content here That I will need time to process it! Its now 2024 and most of this is still relevant, maybe even prophetic. Does not seem like Open AI is on a quest for enlightenment. One thought at the end of this was - what we do with our intelligence is as important as the intelligence. .

Sorry but TDS has very little to do with AI. I would say Mr Sachs has more than a few blind spots for such a smart guy.

I really like Jeff Sachs and agree with most of what he is saying but something tells me that a few of the opinions expressed in this video will not age well......at all.

Perhaps for the tie being, we could just agree to put "know" and "chose" in quotes to make the analogy explicit. Notation matters.

  • @chillyfinger

Brilliant to point out we don't have the language to describe what a machine "knows" or "chooses" This is precisely the issue we have when we want to know "why" bad things happen or what is the meaning of life. It's also interesting to note "degrees" of sentience, which Damasio talks about when he talks about consciousness.

I am impressed by how the core issues are unpacked here. The recent controversy over LamBDA and Blake Lemoine points to an issue that was barely touched on: the vulnerability we have when it comes to "detecting" sentience. Lemoine is dragging the discussion into metaphysics and theology. I think he needs to be challenged on his own ground. For example, detecting "sentience" in the model he built is similar to detecting it in other people and, in his case, detecting sentience in the Universe as a whole. I think these three cases are instances of the same thing. We already know the explosive nature of religious belief. AI may be another ticking time bomb.

For history to be useful, it has to be assessed in the granularity of it's context. The grains being not just those that arbitrated events, but a broad consensus of those effected by events and how knowledgeably complicit they were. But for the average person, fictional encapsulations like the works of Dostoyevsky are more effective.

AGI will not be reached by digital computers using ever more complex neural net type systems because human intelligence is not based around digital computation. It's a combination of analogue and digital. We need to think a bit more out of the box and start developing hybrid computers - an amalgam of digital and analogue systems...

Self driving cars should not be allowed. Many comments in the panel were made that prove this. It will be allowed though due to the globalist's climate change agenda, agenda 2030, insurance company greed (they will probably charge more if you want to drive yourself), etc.

The right to privacy protects us all. What data does the government and industry have that they use to control us? Money tracking and control and the elimination of cash are extremely powerful tools to track and control you.
