    Nice to see another video from you. Your narration is coming along nicely and you sound a lot more natural than in your earlier videos. You know, I was prepared to write off "charmingly glitchy" as you being too kind, but when I saw the shop that let you trade your score for power-ups I was totally stunned. That kind of thing is extremely common in modern games, and this game was literally decades ahead of its time. I felt that "barrel boy can go fuck himself" deep in my soul too. There's something about instant spawning enemies that has aggravated gamers since time immemorial.

    That and like I said, the checkpoint recoveries are shockingly fair for this game's age. The longsword is in the bell if barrel boy shanks you. Its saved by its good stage design. In the end, I still say go play Black Tiger after this.

    I loved mastering the SMS version as a kid despite the punishing difficulty and being memo heavy. The music and stages are burned into my brain and it's great to see a weirdo Data East gem like this getting love.

    The master system one would be a good port if the secrets to recover your power were there. It kept all the wackiness but missed the essential secrets. If only there were one fairy on the cliffsides!

    Yeah, I never played the arcade original until decades later on a terrible laggy emulation setup - which wasn't pleasant. At least the version I had at home wasn't chopped up to fit on a smaller ROM chip like a few other unlucky SMS ports did en route to the West, I guess..

    Voice over is really well written, and this is a good topic, I think you're going to be successful. This is already better than the standard "port vs port" video and rivaling something like game sack or slx for writing if not visuals.

    Totally with you on Bloodlines > CV4, but is the Sharp X68000 version in contention for best of the era? Honestly I love them all (Classic), couldn’t pick a favorite.

  • @kyokusagani8869
    @kyokusagani8869Ай бұрын

    While it's darn good, no. It's not the greatest of the bunch. It's meant for a very niche set of players that want a super challenge. The werewolf fight is absurd and that automatically disqualified it compared to bloodlines. Rondo is closer to that top contender spot !

    From what I read SF1 was commercially successful in Japan at least which makes sense because they only make sequels to stuff that made money. And yeah it's hard to find a game from 87 that looks as good as that

    CV4 does give you challenge starting from dungeon stage onwards, but it relies too much on instakill spikes and death from upwards scrolling

    With nostalgia goggles, my fav Castlevania is 4. Without them, Bloodlines takes spot since Konami took everything great from 4 and vastly improved on it. IMO 4 lacked the challenge and stage design from the NES games. Konami knew that so, they brought that back while still giving the player the nice fluid controls and multi-directional attacks from 4. They nerfed the multi-directional attacks, but that was by design to challenge players and give more purpose to sub weapons. It's not as hard as the NES titles, but it's no cakewalk like 4. It's just right! I'd say my only gripes with the game are the auto-scrolling sections.

    Bloodlines is my favorite Castlevania that I've completed. The game design and play mechanics are much better than IV. I love the 3rd level orb power up. I've yet to complete Rhondo so my opinion could change after that.

    I mostly played the Genesis version. In that one if you die fighting a boss they give you a respawn checkpoint right before the boss. That and a few other things makes it easier but it really is an accurate port especially considering it wasn't even done by Capcom. And this is one game where a turbo button can really give you an advantage

    This has to be one of the laziest bootlegs out there wow. Just vaguely change Yuko's colors and remove all the levels that are not Winx-y enough (literally half of them), that will do.

    It might not even be an intentional crash / ending! There was another winx bootleg that was released bugged, You can't even complete the fire level at all in Winx The Movie because the exit location wasn't moved !

  • @BlasphemousMoons
    @BlasphemousMoons3 ай бұрын

    @@kyokusagani8869 I assumed they skipped level 1, 5 and 6 because the boss of the level (or the level itself) had really nothing to do with Winx. But that's assuming they even knew/cared what Winx was about :D On which system is "Winx The Movie" found? And what does it rip off?

  • @BlasphemousMoons
    @BlasphemousMoons3 ай бұрын

    Also, I went and tested Winx Club 3D, the bootleg of Valis III made by the same studio (KRASH, ironic name). It is based off another bootleg russian translation of the game, so they turned a good bootleg into a chaotic mess with not plot: - They at least changed the name of Yuko to блум in all textes, but they didn't care about the names of any other character/lore element. So Bloom the Fairy used the Valis Sword to destroy the Dark Lord Glames, that's now canon. Also she calls Valia "Mama" but maybe that's just a roleplay kink. - They changed the order of the subsections of their first level for no reason but the rest of the game is mostly the same, just sometimes they removed entire parts of a level (maybe cos they could not bother to playtest the hardest levels). - Because they removed all cinematic scenes, you can beat some character-specific boss with any character, so that's nice. - They disabled MP consumption, which makes the game way easier : you can just spam spells to be invincible and kill enemies faster. I guess they activated infinite MP for debug/playtest and forgot to switch it off in the final product? Now I almost want to buy a cartridge of this shipwreck.

    Winx the movie was also a bootleg of Valis 1 on Megadrive. I see you're a true valis fan! Remind me to review the Famicom original over this. The Japanese called it a Kusoge, but it has so much going for it, it deserves praise.

    @@kyokusagani8869 If you have a good source concerning the bootlegs, I'd love to try them all :D but just looking on google, I'm not getting much results :( I sure wouldn't mind a review of Famicon Valis! It is a crude gemstone like most Valis games, certainly not my favorite but it deserves a few words. Also, I checked your video about X-Multiply, I like your style, and you made me want to plug back the PC Engine and play some R-Type or Gates of Thunder. And of couse, I will give X-Multiply a try :)
